Hello, JH. Age limit is not as much of a factor as a fitness and willingness to engage in a rigorous post-op physical therapy. Here's who we think are good candidates for the procedure: "Patients who are candidates for a BioKnee often have symptoms associated with pain isolated primarily to one side of the joint and do not have underlying inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis which differs from injury-caused post-traumatic or osteoarthritis. Ideally, their range of motion is not too severely limited and their legs are not too badly bowed inside or curved outside (i.e. less than 10 degrees of angulation)." This info and more can be found in our Saving My Knees Guide here www.stoneclinic.com/saving-my-knees

It's not getting back to walking or engaging in certain sports, it's getting back to working. I work in a gym equipment warehouse. Right knee cartilage is wearing out. Thanks. Does the VA hospitals use this technique?
Hello, @J Lietka. I don't believe anyone in the VA is performing this technique as are few other orthopaedists in the world. So it has not yet been universally adopted. You can learn more about our knee program by downloading our "Saving My Knees Guide" available here www.stoneclinic.com/saving-my-knees

I have problems in both knees due to meniscus repair operations done years ago. I have developed moderate arthritis on one side of the knees only. My orthopedic doctor says that replacing my meniscus with a donor meniscus is not a good idea. He says these replaced meniscus break a lot. Is that true? Do you have any comments about that?
Hello there. Sorry to hear of the trouble with your meniscus. That's not unusual advice as many orthopaedists are hesitant with meniscus transplants. However, few, if any, surgeons have performed more meniscus transplants than Dr. Stone. We've had tremendous outcomes and conducted numerous published clinical research studies on the technique. So our Clinic has been able to manage and reduce common problems and failures. You can learn more here www.stoneclinic.com/meniscus-transplant-center Having said that, the tissue being put back into your knee joint is human meniscus tissue. So, it too can be torn by injury like your original meniscus. So that will always be a possibility, just like it is in any healthy knee. Hello; I’m a professional badminton player; Now facing a cartilage injury on my left knee Chondromalacia patella grade 4 Articular cartilage is thinned out Reduced joint space ; Grinding sensation Is there any chance to save my knee joint and return back to normal practice and games ?
Hello, Vishnu. There's almost always something can be done to improve functionality within an injured knee. The critical thing is to restoring the knee anatomy as close to normal as soon as possible. The grinding you're experiencing may be wearing down your articular cartilage and further reducing your joint space. Less invasive, more natural-feeling procedures (like biologic knee replacement and partial knee replacement) are available to you if you still have joint space remaining. However, if you allow your knee injury to progress into bone-on-bone arthritis in all 4 compartments, then your only option would be a total knee replacement. We've put together a guide on how to make the best choices for the long-term health of your knee joints. You may download the Saving My Knees Guide here www.stoneclinic.com/saving-my-knees.

Does Covid-19 interfere with any of your knee procedures? I have heard of many surgeries to fix “non life threatening” conditions like this continuing to be cancelled to make priority for Covid patients. Perhaps thats just for places like hospitals or places that arent as specialized as yours
Hello, Fred. Great question. We have not been troubled by this. Most our surgical procedures are performed at an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (that is in-network with most insurances) where there are NO COVID-19 patients being treated at the surgical facility, which dramatically reduces potential exposure risks to our patients and keeps us running smoothly without being impacted by the daily changes of the pandemic.
Major meniscus and cartilage issues do not heal completely naturally. While we prefer to do the least amount of surgery to get our patients back to full activity, often surgical intervention is required to repair structural issues that will only get worse as time progresses. Sign me up?? In need of a volunteer? I have been battling my knee for two years. It was stuck for 7 months, then I had arthroscopic surgery in 2022, found scar tissue, torn cartilage and one bone looks like a cobble street so my knee still doesn’t bend and when my leg is “straight” my knee bulges out. My leg is not straight at all. I have seen 6-7 specialists and no one can help. Waiting on a referred specialist to refer me out, because he was unable to help but that has already been 4 months waiting and he has yet to refer me to anyone….I’m always in discomfort, I hobble, my life is restricted in all sorts, can’t work, can’t stand too long, can’t sit for extended periods of time. My hips hurts for walking uneven. I climbed mount Whitney and now grocery shopping takes it out of me.
So sorry to hear how much your knee pain is disrupting your life. We are happy to help however we can. Dr. Stone has found success with many troublesome knees in the past. If are interesting in possibly coming to San Francisco for you treatment, you can schedule an appointment by calling us +1(415)563-3110 or you can arrange a virtual consultation by following the instructions on this page www.stoneclinic.com/consult
Sorry but you are showing young people the typical knee replacement is on older Medicare covered patients so please let people know if you cannot pay cash than this is not for you. Medicare will not cover this procedure!
Hello, Jewell. Dr. Stone has performed this procedure on patients in their 20s up to patients in their 60s. For patients even later in their years, we often use robotic knee replacement as the rehab required is much easier. For the BioKnee, more healing and rehab is required which is not always advisable for patients 70+. Regarding insurance coverage, Dr. Stone wrote a recent blog explaining why some medical procedures are not always covered by insurance companies www.stoneclinic.com/blog/new-cool-not-for-you-play-forever-book-excerpt. Hope that's helpful in understanding this procedure in how it is applied and why it may fall outside typical insurance coverage.
I really appreciate taking the MRI before and after so patient can understand the actual effectiveness and results of the surgery rather than be sent home wandering...
Hi, Goldie. We know paying out of pocket for medical care can be a real challenge. However, our procedures would not be covered by Medicaid even if we were to accept it. We never want to our care to be out of reach which is why we pay to partner with Care Credit which offers monthly payment programs for our patients. It is not. The Stone Clinic is an out-of-network provider, which means we are not contracted with any insurance companies and, therefore, do not bill insurance for our services. Contracted, or in-network providers, are only allowed to perform procedures that your insurance company has determined are the preferred method of treating your injury.

Any recommendations for clinics/providers that are either affiliated or doing similar things on the east coast?
The procedures that comprise the BioKnee program were either created or pioneered by Dr. Stone. So few surgeons are trained on these techniques or have sufficient experience for us to confidently make any recommendations.

Hi there,
What is the upper age limit for a bio knee and meniscus replacement at your clinic? Thank you
Hello, JH. Age limit is not as much of a factor as a fitness and willingness to engage in a rigorous post-op physical therapy. Here's who we think are good candidates for the procedure: "Patients who are candidates for a BioKnee often have symptoms
associated with pain isolated primarily to one side of the joint and do
not have underlying inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis
which differs from injury-caused post-traumatic or osteoarthritis.
Ideally, their range of motion is not too severely limited and their legs
are not too badly bowed inside or curved outside (i.e. less than 10
degrees of angulation)." This info and more can be found in our Saving My Knees Guide here www.stoneclinic.com/saving-my-knees

Hello, @J Lietka. I don't believe anyone in the VA is performing this technique as are few other orthopaedists in the world. Can this be done on knees that are bone on bone?
Here are our general guidelines for determining whether or not a patient is a candidate for our BioKnee program: "BioKnee procedures such as cartilage
replacements can often be performed as long as there is space
available, meaning that the joint is not completely bone-on-bone.
Patients who are candidates for a BioKnee often have symptoms

not have underlying inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis

I suffered a torn meniscus as of last year. In which over a year later I am still experiencing stiffness of the knee. So exactly what procedures(including therapy, and or surgery) does your clinic offer to solve such a ailment?
Hi there. The meniscus is a critical part of your knee anatomy. Many surgeons trim large portions or entirely remove this vital shock absorber in your knee often causing stiffness and eventually arthritis.
You can learn more here www.stoneclinic.com/meniscus-transplant-center
Having said that, the tissue being put back into your knee joint is human meniscus tissue. So, it too can be torn by injury like your original meniscus. So that will always be a possibility, just like it is in any healthy knee.

Our goal is to keep you fit and active and to delay artificial knee replacement for as long as possible. Now facing a cartilage injury on my left knee
Chondromalacia patella grade 4
Articular cartilage is thinned out
Reduced joint space ;
Grinding sensation
Is there any chance to save my knee joint and return back to normal practice and games ?

Hello, Jack. After your consultation is complete, our surgical coordinator will take Dr. Stone's treatment plan and provide the exact price of our clinic's fees for procedure prescribed for you. So you'll know the cost of your treatment before any travel or commitments. When you are ready, you can arrange a consult here www.stoneclinic.com/consult
@@stoneclinic I was trying to get a ballpark estimate in round figures (minimum to maximum) before laying out on travel and accommodation from the UK. I won't go, only to find out its beyond my means.
Hello again, @@jackmeough6338. The consultation for out-of-country patients is complimentary and performed virtually on a computer or via a phone call. So you will not need to spend any money or travel prior to receiving a diagnosis and full estimate of all treatment fees. So you will have no travel/financial commitments before you find out the cost of repairing your injury.
@@stoneclinic thank you, that's helpful.
@@jackmeough6338 that's all they had to say the 1st time 😆
Around 50K per knee.
Brilliant
Some traumatologists have told me that at my age of 44, I should have the cadaveric cartilage allograft done before putting on the partial knee prosthesis, and my question is is this technique good and does it last over time? Or is partial prosthesis better today? many traumatologists recommend the prosthesis and others the allograft? they would know
Hello, our bias for allograft meniscus replacement over bionic knee replacement when possible. Human-made implants still can't beat the design of real meniscus tissue from Mother Nature; and bionic knee replacement is still an option later down the line when your knee is repaired biologically. So it serves as intervention to delay or completely avoid a knee replacement. You may find out more about our #BioKnee program and our approach to knee injury treatment in our Saving My Knees Guide available here www.stoneclinic.com/saving-my-knees.
2 years ago i suffered a Tibial plateau fracture on my right knee. They fixed the injury with 3 plates (one on each side, and 1 in the middle front of the leg.) Here I am 2 years later and still using a cane, no balance, and my knee is buckling to the left, and bone on bone, and they said I now need a total knee replacement. I there anything your clinic can do?
Hi, Michael. So sorry to hear about your recovery process. For info, we suggest checking out these article by Dr Stone that may apply to your situation www.stoneclinic.com/blog/anterior-knee-pain & www.stoneclinic.com/blog/delaying-knee-joint-replacement. Is stem cell therapy and biological knee replacement are same? If they are same then tell me is there any bad consequences of this procedure??bcz I found that there will be the chances of tumor by this procedure.
Hello Syed. The phrase "stem cell therapy" is overused and misused. So it can create a great deal of confusion. This program is a combination of surgical procedures that repair or replace your damaged tissues. There is no mechanism of action or any evidence to suggest any of these procedures even could cause any tumors. You can learn more about the facts of this procedure here www.stoneclinic.com/bioknee
ok but...did the doc attain the holy grail of cartilage replacement or what?
Hello, Paul. As scientists, our team would not call it the holy grail, but this technique achieves impressive results vs other procedures like OATS & microfracture. Here is the research conducted thus far www.stoneresearch.org/articular-cartilage. Additionally, further research on this technique is being funded by the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2022/02/01/2377116/0/en/California-Stem-Cell-Agency-Awards-the-Stone-Research-Foundation-1-3M-to-Fight-Osteoarthritis.html
Why do we need surgery if this is done naturally?
Major meniscus and cartilage issues do not heal completely naturally. While we prefer to do the least amount of surgery to get our patients back to full activity, often surgical intervention is required to repair structural issues that will only get worse as time progresses. You can learn about your approach here www.stoneclinic.com/understanding-the-stone-approach
@@stoneclinic will the technique of procuring cartilage from a health part of knee to patch the damage not cause further damage to that healthy area and spread damage given the poor healing capacity/ no blood supply of cartilage ?
I want rubber knees next time
If this was so wonderful it would be mainstream lol..
Agreed! That's why we have the Stone Research Foundation which is sharing the clinical research results from these procedures so other surgeons and medical systems may learn and adopt these techniques.
Many of our patients travel to our Clinic in San Francisco for our care. If you are interested in exploring this option, you can arrange a complimentary consultation with Dr. Stone by following the instructions on this page www.stoneclinic.com/consult
What good is such a great alternative treatment if it only benefits a very small percentage of the population????? Not only is San Francisco a very expensive city to just visit, most Americans could not afford $20,000 plus out of pocket. Why doesn't Doctor Stone open other clinics in the USA but try to get FDA approval and Insurance buy in!!!!!
Hello, Eusebio. The speed of change within the insurance companies and the medical system can be frustrating. To encourage wider spread adoption of our techniques, we have the Stone Research Foundation which has a number of clinical research studies currently underway to demonstrate the efficacy of these surgeries so more orthopaedic surgeons around the country begin performing them. You can learn more here www.stoneresearch.org/

It’s crazy insurance won’t pay for something safer for a person !!!
You have to have money for this not plain old mediciad this only is for big bucks people
Hi, Goldie. We know paying out of pocket for medical care can be a real challenge. However, our procedures would not be covered by Medicaid even if we were to accept it. We never want to our care to be out of reach which is why we pay to partner with Care Credit which offers monthly payment programs for our patients. More info on it here www.stoneclinic.com/financial-considerations
