Early digital shows are trapped at low resolution. That's how they were at a source material level. The "improved" versions floating around are upscales, which don't actually add detail, they just smooth things out (which actually removes some level of detail in the process). This often gives shows a blurry oil painting look. Some prefer this to the jaggy pixlated look of the source material, some don't. The solution to pixelated releases is: just watch a bit further away from your screen.
The point is piracy is a services problem. One could spend money on releases that look much worse than what the pirate provides for free. Which one will they choose? If you missed the point of this video, then I'm inclined to believe you don't give a shit about media preservation.
damn I stumbled across this video by accident because this annoyed me with my copy!!! I can report that they literally did the exact same thing for the UK release. the UK distributor AnimeLtd used the Funimation 1080imasters and pasted them onto B region disks in the thicker british 14mm amaray, slapped some disk art and a classification logo on it and called it a day. What's funny is that our 4-disk set's bonus disk (a) is a DVD because lol, (b) looks better than the Blu-Rays, and (c) has the wrong "Disk No." in the menus since it's Disk 5 of the North American original DVD set. Oh and also despite our jewel cases being made of different materials compared to US ones my hinge broke too :(
Well Funimation is dead now but most of their staff joined Crunchyroll and are worse than ever even stealing someone's fan mall and horrible streaming etc.
This is not to pass judgement, I respect the mark of passion for things people care about. If I have even 2-3 frames of input lag in a fighting game it's unplayable for me, so I understand what seems minor to me is a huge detriment to someone else. But I'm very relieved that as tech went on, I can still enjoy something at 420p or lower resolutions in general. Despite growing up on 4:3 cable, I can tell the difference in the 1080i and 1080p you showed, but the difference is negligible enough that it doesn't affect the experience for me at all. I'm relieved I never fell that deep in the visual quality pit, I feel like I'd go insane.
Just wondering, did you also compare the DVDs to see if they look better than the Blu Ray? Yea dumb Idea but who knows maybe it’s better encoded on the DVD?
The crunchyroll version looks worse than I remember my anime legends bandai dvd release looking, I don't remember the lines being so pixelated. The acquired version you showed is what I remember my dvd looking like. I wonder what the japanese blu ray looks like? Anyways, this is a crime to release this show looking like this!
@@tourwillem well its true it's not like multiple sites didnt say it was 1080i and the assumption that the blu ray only release would be different was retarded. I agree that the disc releases should be better but a little bit of research can save alot of money and time.
the reason why lucky star looks like that is bc it wasn't made in 1080p it was originally made in 480p and the pirate ver is just upscaled
You know what they say, once a pirate, always a pirate.

The main issue for me is not pixelation, it's the interlacing. Obviously the animators did not draw what was on screen at 0:56.
Buy the Version with the DVDs looks way better.
There is also a mastering error on the original Blu-ray set so one episode is unwatchable
This guy saw pixels on his TV and went to make a RUclips video about it. I’ll never get those 2 minutes and 43 seconds back

@@tourwillem it's not actually "much worse", you can upscale anything and say it "looks better", even when most people don't think so
Yes, upscales can be hit or miss. But releasing an interlaced blu ray of an animated show is just lazy.

2:22 so we watch Higurashi instead?
the 720p is obviously upscaled.
oh yeah this just convinced me to buy it

I have a question for you.
Is this blu-ray is Region A & B?
I suppose it's A.
why is the Windows XP Error sound effect instead of TV Beep No Signal Sound effect
wasn’t the lucky star blu ray released in 2008?
Why is a Windows XP Error sound Instead of TV Beep Sound
inspired by mattkc ig
the one on zorox isnt that bad i think
1080i!?!?!?!?! 00:23
Yeah that's sucks but you also did piss poor research so next time you buy a show know what your buying.
ah yes, my buying.
