The name Jamaican guy in the video dropping game is Lloyd Laing.
I can’t find him on YT, do you know his accounts name ?!?
I wanna use that clip for an intro to a song lowkey 😂
I miss the days where an album is so 🔥. That it has no skips and every song on the project has a potential to be a hit. A 4 to 5 mic in the source used to mean that album is going to be filled with Bangers and the label and streets determined if you were going to swim
There was never a time like that lol.
Even some of the greatest albums like ‘the dedications’ by Lil Wayne have skips. It’s just there wasn’t so many skips. Now there is an entire album of skips & only 1 good songs. It is the opposite of how it used to be tho.
El Guapo I am dropping something like that let's goooooooooo
@@steelokey imo, Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint by Jay Z, SSLP and MMLP by Em, The Chronic 2001 by Dre, GRODT by 50, Be by Common, BOTS by Mos Def, LAD by Biggie, AEOM by 2 Pac. All these albums have an non skip maybe 1 or 2 track max skips. No one just creates a complete canvas it feels like random tracks put together for clout
@@kptecx-xs2dwbe by common so underrated
To be honest, I think I just created one
Singles aren't pointless at all and actually help with album sales. If people mess with the single before the album comes out then they'll have more anticipation to listen to the album if the singles are good.
That's how it worked for the past 6 decades. Maybe this new generation is different because of the way they consume music.
10000%
I purposely avoid listening to singles at release and after album release.🤷🏿♂️
The issue is whole album sales are not the norm as opposed to singles sales. When you can ala carte tracks you know you like, why would anyone pay more for an entire album they may only like the singles from? I hate the singles economy but this is how music is being consumed now.
I think this applies to where OFFSET is at this point in HIS career - he's big enough to put out a project and the fans/listeners decide what the hit is with few songs previously released from the project. For smaller artist it's the inverse till it's not.
Naw bro think about it. I was thinking that at first too but think about it. Singles are good for his career actually because he already has the big fan base. Smaller artist should make dope albums, put them out correctly and then move to the next album while building your fans base. As new fans come on, they'll find your old music too. If you promoting one song as an unknown artist most people not even going to find that one song.
Was coming here to say this. As an up and coming artist, the single is everything. Good luck getting new fans to listen to a whole project. Unfortunately.
@@kdmj48 Offset is big enough to were he can implement a single or project based strategy (or mix both). But I’ll have to respectfully disagree with your point as I don’t think it applies to todays music sphere. Albums are never a bad thing, but it’s definitely better to have a group of single song releases from the POV as a fan discovering new music, than having a bunch of albums released as a small/unknown artist. Listening to a couple songs is easy, an album takes more time/commitment as a new fan/listener. I think this is why a lot of music heads mention “catalog” as this will include singles, EP’s, and albums. You build with singles that lead to the other two over time.
This is the best answer yet. I think any artist that's big enough OR has had their fanbase long enough can pull that off.
Totally agree!!!
Nobody has the keys to the industry. It just depends on how you move because if you are strategic, a single will break the ice.
"Your prime audience isn't asking for perfection"..........schooled the shit outta me just now!!!!! THANK YOU FRFR
I agree when dropping a project. However indie artists need to drop some singles to build up for the project release.
indie artists have to drop whole mixtapes. now bring that back
@@k.johnson2722and also EP worth of songs will work as well
It’s subjective. Some artists get discovered by their album/mixtape & others is their single. The great thing about life is options & it can go either way.
We can’t listen to these artist. Do what works for you. What may pop for you may not pop for them.
I appreciate this
@@KYLETISZAI salute! 🫡
Especially cant listen to an Offset...dude doesnt even know how to be a successful solo artist! He is lost without a group! He def doesnt know HOW to pick a single, thats why he divulged his philosophy as it being what it is. If im wrong, please inform me which successful solo single has he had???
@@FrancSteinmen 🤭
Singles are pointless if you only make music for the money...sad.
artist. want to be a one hit wonder or a afterthought microwave artist.
This is a funny take from Offset, seeing how his wife Cardi B only drops singles. Hasn't dropped an album in 6 years
Facts
That snippet at the end totally caught me off guard Curtis King got bars, and that beat is so soulful 🙆🏾♂️🔥
The industry is such a mess rn, a few weeks ago I was listening to music execs saying an album is a waste of time nowadays because of the short attention span and singles are the way
Its true though
You better listen to the industry and not Offset here since the industry is the one running the business side for Offset. He's just the voice and face that makes them money... in the end they have all the data. Albums are pointless
YOOO! I looove what that Jamaican dude said. You gotta keep putting music out, and over time, it builds like compound interest. Like he said, you'll find the hit along the way. I always keep in my head; "quanitity creates quality." And I like what you said at the end Curtiss, we as creators/artists/producers have to keep putting out work so then the ppl can have something to look back on... not sure if that's exactly what you meant but me personally, my channel is tiny and I make beat videos and literally no one is watching, yet. But I keep doing it cause I want to build that creative catalog aside from my music on Spotify, Apple, etc. Cause not only is it fun, first off, but you gotta have something for people to stay entertained and like you for what you do.
This man doesn’t miss !! The content just gets better ! Bro keep going you been at it for years and I solute you
🙏🏽🫡🛠️
As I’m literally working on my roll out… lol. This video is So timely. Thanks!
It’s true Beyoncé chose break my soul as the single but the people chose cuff it. The fans are always gonna chose.
Releasing music is pointless. Even if you become famous, you are nothing but a clown on a string pretending to be happy. Do music for the love of it, not for what it might give you. Music should be a servant to you, not you a servant to it.
lol so singles are pointless and no one listens to albums?? 😂 damn
Most single based artist discography suck and you never ser there real potential. Scarcity mindset
This video appeared in my algorithm. I watched it. I was entertained. I learned something. So, I’m digging thru the older vids and checking the music. This is why you build. You don’t know what’s going to hit.
Happy Wednesday DIY Family 🙏
This video is so freeing for me. I’ve spent sooo much time building a strategy for certain songs and have been holding back releases in order to choose my singles which is causing me not to release music as consistently as I probably should. Not saying I need to release every week but I can definitely release more often than I do. Especially when it comes to building a catalog. And although I’ve been doing music since a child, I’m really only four years into releasing music on streaming and RUclips so technically I’m a new artist which means I need more than the 2 albums and couple of singles I’ve put out. But this video unlocked something in my mind for me to re-strategize. Thanks for this 💯
I like your comment bro. I’m re-strategizing also with my music now. The more I learn!!!!!!
The content shared on this video was top tier, especially the video at the end
i don't agree with " if the artist has one album were not interested" narrative ive become a fan off of one project of a couple of artist if they have the talent ill listen if im fond of it ill come back and listen in due time
I am music maker and i make every song sound like a single but i put just enough substantial material in the music without beating it over there heads but i do use that one single that will sum up the project entirely
same 💯
Didn't need to hear Offset say, "Let The Fans Pick The Hit Or Favorite Single." I said this years ago: you put out 12 songs with the track you as an artist have in mind as a favorite, and the fans will most of the time go in the other direction (FACT!)
Of course people with really bad singles would say singles are pointless
I've definitely checked out artists who we're "Blowing-Up" and it was literally one song and Then even tho I may have really really liked the song and played it all day for 3 days, inevitably I went back too listing to my favorite artists Albums like usual and forgot about them. And, I've more times then I can count heard a song that was okay but nothing I cared much for but then I hear it by accident a few more times and I go check the discography and find Hella Albums and end up "falling in love" with said artists; art (in a sense)
I noticed with fandoms on Tiktok and Instagram fans will keep posting the songs that are their favorites. Doesn’t matter if it was a single or not. It’s important to at least have live performances of most of your songs so fans don’t have issues getting posts blocked for copyright. Studio versions of singles are the most heavily policed on RUclips and Instagram. Taylor Swift fan accounts (100K+ followers) get taken down all the time for copyright violations. She has so many fan accounts marketing for her now she’s unstoppable.
I actually just came across your channel a couple weeks ago, but I subscribed lol and I love the content keep it up 💪🏽
This is really insightful. Y’all hit the mark about catalogs being critical. Definitely learned a lot in this video
I believe that was shabba ranks lol
That’s what I said 😂
Ill 3rd this. Had me thinking back to A$AP Fergs video lmfao
Lol naw that ain’t Shabba
I miss back when an album was a whole creative process. one single was released, it had artwork and a dope visual and is the only song you get from the artist besides a couple features. I miss hardcopy albums with a booklet and dope artwork.
I hear you loud and clear. Catalog matters
Y’all snapped me out of it!!!🤯
Offset already has hits . He doesnt need to drop singles to live off his work .
😬😬😬😬 #respect king I am one of those ones who known of you for over 10 yrs being a artist from Cali (compton2ie) and I’ve been a subscriber but I wasn’t tapped in tapped in as I’ve been this last yr I have over 30 albums a brand from merch to soda sponsors mgmt it’s dope to hear and know as they always say it take time a lot of time we’ll glad I been started my catalog neva been a singles person from get go but to keep the supa fans I’m all about it and I AM A SUPA FAN OF URS NOW 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🐐🐐🐐🐐
Thank you for all the jewels this is dope appreciated
7:40 black milk said it in "One song"! 😊 Cheers for the good content
WE ARE GOING IN CIRCLES.
I get that mentality for an established artist. Bc they have a fan base lol. A brand new artist should focus on ONE song. When u first heard ur fav artists it was that ONE song. Then u wanted more. Then more. Then the album. Plus I feel if u wanna move the needle ur album needs HYPE around it. A single creates the HYPE. Its just the artist job to live up to the hype.
That’s not what they’re saying . The problem is we do not know which “one song” will work , especially as independent artist with little to no fanbase . If you put out 5 songs and market them simultaneously the market / audience will organically tell you which one they gravitate, speaking from experience
@@KDazee if independent artists can afford to fund and market 5 songs at once then they should get out the game and invest that $ wisely. Bc if u wanna MAKE it. And actually touch ppl with 5 songs? It’s gonna cost 10-100k. Let’s be real.
Personally, I always felt dropping singles as an underground artist (a nobody) is a waste of time.
I just release full length albums and create the wave that way. Artists like Gucci Mane, Curren$y, and Lil B made me see that you don’t need to have a radio single.
I record myself, I release myself, I make my own cover art, I do everything.
Like Jamaican dude said, I chose to build the catalogue. I used to drop 4-6 albums a year, now it’s just once a year.
Damn bro the song at the end is facts, really enlightening. Love the style of your music man
I just subscribed bro I feel like singles are key but the album is always appreciated on the backend I just hope everyone can visualize the importance of playing the long game 🎮💯
Bro, I subscribed to your channel after like two videos because of the way You explain the ends and outs of the music industry I'm not an artist of any sort, but I like to learn and you're really good at teaching
Things sure have changed and that’s exactly why artists wanna sign those deals, tell the labels to cut out the 360 deals. We know they get part of that ad money for these streaming services, but are the artists getting a cut of that revenue? How do you go from dollars and cents to fractions of a cent? And then gotta give up part of everything else too? They’re literally cuffing all the artists that aren’t icons.
respect for the feature my brothers..lets keep the connection!!
❤
offset has no idea how to be an independent or how to build a fanbase as one
No one knows what they’re doing. But I’m beginning to like Offset now that he’s speaking more since i never heard much from him before. This makes a lot more sense than what the rest of the crowd is saying (and has been saying for a few years now).
“Lawd a mercy” blucc blucc “
This is a great video and perspective. Thanks a bunch!
If you want Spotify to push your songs then you best believe doing singles is better than full projects.
Why not both
Streaming put music on its death bed.
Bruh and his wife can’t make/write a hit single now as solo artist lol talking. About “singles are pointless” 😂
Doing it Set's way also let's the fans feel included in the process and might lead to them staying with the artist long-term.
I miss the days of artists having perspectives. I buy music to gain an outlook I may not have. Jay Z was asked if he would buy Marcy Projects and he said no because people wouldn't move up in the world they would stay there since his name would be attached to it. Listeners get so caught up in what they want from an artist that it could delay an artist growth. This is the point (I believe) Joe Buddens was trying to make with Drake. I don't totally agree with it all but there is SOME truth there.
The way this just opened my eyes. As someone who has been making music for "fun" for over a decade. The true reason I always said "for fun" is because, some projects are weird and I know its always a gamble putting out a song you invest so much in and it doesn't do the numbers you expected. I have a decent sized unreleased catalog. I might just push it to my couple of fans if they are still present and see wsup Lol.
DAM good vid...so many bars and omg the shared universe example 🔥 sheesh!
"the artist you don't know is making more money than the ones you do"
"your prime audience is not asking for perfection"💪 😤
Only applies to artists with well established fan base and creative direction. Until you really have a story to tell or represent and/or have people to recieve it, its better to push singles or small projects frequently and use that info to make better decisions with your drops.
It’s crazy this whole concept of keeping a catalog. Whenever I want to watch a series on whatever streaming platform if it doesn’t have at least 3 seasons I don’t even see it worthy of my time and won’t watch until it has 3 or more.
I think that depends on the genre. If u look at wlectronic music such as house, deep house, melodic house & techno etc... their realease format is usually as such:
- single or an EP of 2 , 3 or 4 songs
- a few months later: another EP
- afew moths later: remixes of the first EP
- then later remixes of the second EP
- sometimes they release only radio edits of tracks,
- then later or on a separate compilation the release extended versions of edits / remixes
- then at some point, they release previously unreleased highly sought after tracks they have played in festivals ....
-
Basically they can work on several tracks then release them in batches progressively .....
- then a year or two later they release an actual LP / album comprised of original tracks that sometimes include extended versions of some previously released edits that never had their extended versions released .....
- Rinse and repeat, not particularly in the above mentionned order . . .
Maybe this format only works with electronic music, because i havent seen that with mainstream genres . . .
Great information ℹ️ I’m a upcoming artist so I needed those jewels 💎 to help me in my musical journey
So in other words… “Just drop that shit!”
Strange question if you read these: About those Super Fans that artists say they want... how come when a fan becomes a Super Fan of an up and coming... the Artist always brushes them off and makes them feel bad for being a fan??
I would say because there’s a difference between an up and comer and an independent artist. Independent artists understand the value of a superfan and do everything in their power to accommodate and make them feel special. One doesn’t become a superfan by accident, it’s alway by effort and that artist over delivering on their value. Up and comers don’t always respect the things they know internally they haven’t earned.
I liked the video because of the song...I've been watching Curtis king back in like 2014 but I never like the music only the YT content but over time I've grown to enjoy the songs..keep going brodie big inspiration to me from then til now!
Preview the album to fans and critics, producers…get the feedback. Adjust a bit. Let it fly. Release it. Ultimately, make a good record!!! Spots and dots are only important to those who make the money. You need to diversify, repurpose, multiply, expand, market, and create a multiverse and tactical plan for plan.
Man that song on the end was dope !! the commercial was rocking to :)
That ending track is dope
This is some of the best info I came across
The singles are pointless these days because they aren’t giving us albums, they are giving us playlist. They wait to see what’s at the top of the “playlist” and then just make that the single. Prime example, Gunna-FukUMean
Definitely inspirational 👍
needed to hear this, thank u curtis
Like the shirt Curtis! Great info as well.
Hmm I like that Lottery analogy. Ya make me think. I’m one who works on my music, & struggle with what to let go & what to keep. I’ve had this thought to make EPs/Mixtapes/Albums to build the catalog. But then the questions come how much is too much?
Lot of gems in this vid. Definitely making me rethink my release strategies moving forward. Stay golden, my G
Great Episode
I don’t know about the album thing it’s a lot to push a full project for up and comers. It takes too much money to push multiple songs as an artists with no financial backing. It’ll be more effective to push singles and drop them consistently with planned rollouts. I’ve dropped 9 projects in my artists career. So I know the ins and outs.
You did right call 12 so she can go I learned from a situation like that. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
4:40 sample gold
Good points 💯
CURTIS!!!
I love how this is the second time I've heard you spit and I'm like damn why my nih gotta hit us like that at the end of the video wtf cmon man 🤝🏾🤝🏾🤝🏾🤌🏾🔥🤌🏾🤌🏾
🤣🙏🏽
This was dope
I’m sorry to say but I will consistently release singles because singles aren’t pointless that’s how I got playlisted on streaming platforms. Where he is at with his artistry he can consistently release albums because he has the money, clout & fans. For independent artists we have to do more leg work just to be able to get to a level where someone wants to buy our album.
Love this message🫡putting out singles never sat right with me. It really comes down to being your first fan…what do you want to see from yourself? Then the path will be clear.
Also you were preachin on that song lol good shit
thank you for this Kings
I'm that guy that been watching for a minute and just subbed today 😂
This was too good!!
The Tik tok boom has major artists fighting for there place at the labels!! It's simple, when you don't want small upcoming artists to catch up overnight.... Mislead them.
The Jamaican man 😂😂😂 love the shades ...biggg up yah bwoy ...
I have no room to speak. I only have 5 monthly listeners but it seems like singles condition listeners to only want to consume only that one product. Surely this could be true or not true for specific artists.
ex - sisqo hated recording "sleeping in my bed" and it was a huuuuge hit, according to nokio sisqo hated every lead single dru hill released and he is always wrong re: the groups singles
😂😂😂 I gotta hit the studio i don't like playing the lottery 😅
Finally my way of thinking is being more adopted. I’ve been focused on projects more than songles for years cuz I know my music is good and when it finally goes it’ll send ppl down a funnel for hours
Insightful
The songs with lasting impressions often are not the most catchy. A single is an artificial push for a song that you trust will have a lasting impression and be remembered.
I love your podcast
Instead of trying to sell one thing to everyone, it's far easier to sell everything to one person.
Thats how i felt about my song "The Mirror" ..had know idea people would like it as much as they do.
Offset had singles for his new album tho 🤔
Daaaaaaamn. Beeen following all Curtiss content lately and just want to say that song at the end of this is damn Grammy material. Heads upp. What is the title of it
🙏🏽🛠️ it being something you resonate with is much more valuable than that piece of metal. Thank you fam
It is better to put out catalog pf records than one hit single. Single oriented mind set brings mediocry, scarecity mindset and hit over quality.
