I think every artist should have their own website with their entire catalog available for download/streaming or something. I miss buying whole
Albums.
Okay....
Good point.
Songwriter, Performer, Producer, Todd Rundgren told the record companies this very plan 30 years ago, when the internet was in its infancy, they did not listen, now they are pretty much dead. They can only see what they have trained themselves to see.
Yes, but how do you get people over there?
Problem is no one is going to pay to stream just one album on an individuals website. What are you going to do charge an individual $1 a month for individual stream of your catalog, when that person can for pay $10 to Apple to stream thousands of albums and access to 90% of the worlds content. While I appreciate artists trying to get what they deserve. This doesn’t work on scale.
Curtis you are absolutely right about these streaming platforms going broke. From music to film, the business models are unsustainable. They are cannibalizing themselves and they are trying to figure out how to stop the bleeding.
they're so hopelessly addicted to endless profits.
Labels (movie production companies) used to have a physical product to sell... music isn't tangible and record sales were the only why of keeping track of costs and profits of the art...
The cost of making music doesn't have to cosy 1m studio sessions, legal and all that other ish... the labels had it good for a long time...now its all falling over...
I can assure you streaming companies aren’t going broke from their business model
Hahaha...
Respect to you Curtiss. Streaming was created to solve the problem of music availability, not music payment. The result is artists work for tech companies for free exposure. The problem with that is the attention doesn't always convert to dollars, just cents.
And those cents dont make sense to artists.
@2billionsubs this approach will lose you more fans than it gains you but do your thing.
@2billionsubs why u even say tht hatin ahh shii bro damn😂 nigguh fr a whole hater
@2billionsubs you sound really ignorant. How close are you to those 2billion subs?
100 cents equals 1.00
REMEMBER... Spotify is in bed with the major labels, so even if you are independent the major labels are earning from every stream made by independent artists.
Facts, they pay Drake for your streams even if the listener doesn't listen to Drake and then they pay people like Joe Rogan $250,000,000. I earn nothing from my streams because I only have a small following currently. This model isn't sustainable for artists.
We totally agree with you. We are so disgusted with Spotify we are releasing our own platform in February so we can represent our own artists and pay them no matter whether it be $1 or $10,000. Keep up the good work and see you on the flip side.
sounds nice
we need new platforms no cap
Here's the bottom line. I think we as artist need to be proactive about how our music is consumed and how to monetise. We do not own Spotify, apple, instagram or any of these place. We rent, they charge and landlords will always be landlords. At the end of the day, all these social platforms and streaming platforms are simply town squares where we can meet people. One thing we can do is have our own space, make it ready and bring people there. And our space has to offer more than is available in the town square.
that's exactly what I've been thinking about lately
For a long time, before Spotify even, Bandcamp was that square. But since it’s acquisition by Epic Games and sale to Songtradr, the last beam of hope we had is being destroyed by the very capitalist industry it was fighting against
And to never sell out that town square to any suit.
Lots of people say this but who will actually make it happen? Would it not then need to earn money to maintain whatever platform it is on and then just become the same as all the others?
@@secretarchivesofthevatican Not necessarily. The most important factor is the payout model. All platforms except Soundcloud currently use model "Pro Rata" which incentivizes artists to use bots for fake plays to get more revenue and streaming platforms and distributors to scam the small artists. If the platform uses "user centric" model, there is no incentive for anyone to try something because the way money are distributed is very clear and transparent and there is no way around it.
moving to physical is going to carry real meaning with consumers.
Respect! The precedent is becoming set...and dangerously. The threshold of 1,000 streams per track can now easily become 1,500....2,000....etc over time. It's too much to even stress over for 1/3 of a penny. Artists, we have options...We don''t have to just bow down to this. Let Spotify continue to benefit major artists and labels...but NOT off the indie artists' back 💯
What are the options you speak of
We need some independently owned streaming services with proper payouts
Talk to em! 👏🏾 seeing someone stand on their beliefs especially in the music business, is inspiring. We’ve seen too many people conform to the bs that goes on just to secure their position of relevancy. Power to you Curtiss King #DIY
Thats a great move. This is the direction the creators need to go in. I would love to see the streaming services change or perish. After decades of major labels ripping off artists these bastards took the baton and normalized receiving a fraction of a penny all while selling a monthly subscription. Nobody would accept these terms in any field of work, so why should artists? Stand tall bro, trailblazers have to cut the brush and create the paths.
True Words.
Been consuming your content for about 3 months. Not a musician or in the industry. Just into doing good business. I own 2 in-home daycares and been build a business profile that can adapt to any economic environment. Checking your content let’s me know you been through a lot. You sharing your experiences means a lot to me. Although we are involved in to different industries, us doing business is universal. And game recognize game. New sub. New supporter!
I was listening to my music at work on Soundcloud and was shocked to see so many commercials popping up after every track played. upwards of 100 tracks about 120 commercials, sometimes there were more than one commercials after some streams. Almost no money generated from streams not even a penny. I removed almost all my music as soon as I got home.
That's insane bro, insane 🤦🏾♂️
Time to double down on independence and support directly to Artist. Having extra unreleased songs for super fans and everything that helps the experience for both parties. Good thought to take music off specific platforms that don’t respect music and the people who make it.
I thought the EXACT same thing yesterday. You're right on the money!
Are the fans willing to bypass the ease of access to support the artist though?
@@juswolf22 exactly though! I feel like that’s the tough part
@@juswolf22 super good question. The thing is tho if a fraction of streamers are willing to spend $10 on an album just to show support, your ROI would still benefit from it. It's really hard to say.
@@IAmWriteJus that’s the sacrifice we have to make as artist. It’s difficult because these news cars aren’t made with cd players anymore too.
I’ve resisted putting my music on any big platforms and I will continue. The industry that I dreamed of being in as a child has let me down my whole life. This issue is no different. All they do is feed us bullshit about doing it only for love, not the money meanwhile they sit back and take what we rightfully deserve. Getting heard, now more than ever, is damn near impossible no matter where we publish. So for years I’ve been on the fence of deleting everything of mine left online. So your plight and action resonates me immensely. Sadly at my age, all that’s left for me is just the desire to at least be remembered past the day I’m put 6 feet under.
So what is your solution? I am in the same situation as you and are considering bandcamp
As a music listener, I LOVE spotify, how you can discover music, small artists with only a few hundrer or thousand followers with the similar artist feature, but it changed over the years while they find ways to keep making more money.
Been on the sidelines watching how they keep on treating artists worst every year and increase sub prices at the same time.
Every year or two since Spotify launched in 2008 the pay-per-stream rate has gone down (From about $0.008 in 2008 to about $0.003 in 2023). Despite Creators pleading for an increase in the pay-per-stream rate, Spotify has simply ignored Creators, claiming they (Spotify) are losing money. Now we are heading into 2024 and not only are Creators NOT getting a rate rise, but on the contrary, Spotify is telling 80% of the Creators on their platform.....WE ARE NOT GOING TO PAY YOU ANYTHING!!! Yes, 80% of Creators on Spotify do less than 50 streams per month. Just imagine if a Distributor were ever to tell Creators "If you sell less than 1000 vinyl records, CDs or digital downloads, WE ARE NOT GOING TO PAY YOU!!!!
Wonder if the shareholders' money went down 60% in the same time also...
This channel is great since errybody be tellin me to post my beats this is the type of information i need before I do, Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!!!
I resonate hard with this!!! I've been having issues with many platforms trying to update and/or remove profiles. All of what you said is TRUTH! The greed these companies have over things that aren't theirs is insane. I'm with ASCAP and I am hoping they don't do this.🤞🏽This kind of thing is happening in many industries though!
I've enjoyed being an independent DIY musician because of my creative freedom, expression and control. But this? Another instance of taking advantage of the little guys. They really don't want us to shine! But stay strong fellow artists💪🏽We got this! ✊🏽
I think this is all part of a push for AI to overtake any and all forms of art and entertainement, including music. Great work as always, brotha.
Ur Dumb🤦🏽♂️ Spotify is not a profitable company with its current business model so of course their going to charge more for their services 🤦🏽♂️they loose a couple 100 million every year currently
"They" want (need) to control the narrative. No dissenting voices, no wrong-think, and no troublemakers. Stand in line, do not think for yourself and no matter what happens, follow who we tell you to.
💯
This is exactly what Metallica’s talking about 24yrs ago
Dude, this is for real across the board in ALL genres. I am glad there is content like this pushing the word and giving good ideas to the small artist(s).
I was happy to buy a CD from Skyzoo personally the other night because i knew it was going in his pocket. CDs are still cool in my book.
👍🏽😎
I just started back beat making a year ago. I was very eager in the beginning to finish some projects and post them online. Seeing this video gives me more patience. I see how important it is to survey the landscape before building upon it the land.
Matthew 7:24-29 💪🏾💚💚💚🙏🏾
Youre spot on about a lot of this, although your perception is that music has that much value these days. I feel that music is nothing more than a business card. IT's a shame because artist spend a lot of money on producing the song, artwork, marketing and all that goes into it. I feel that If you really want to make money from your music, you should merchandise it. Put on your own hosted site and maybe include artwork or some type of merch like the old days of cd's. Make mini movies/videos for your songs that you dont post anywhere. It would be only a matter of time before it ends up online by some schmoe anyway.
To take your music off of the most popular streaming service is also removing your business cards. You could also put more important tracks on your OWN hosted site. Remember that all of these services are no different than a record label that bleeds the artist dry
But the question is, how does a new producer reach out to its audience without using these platforms? and what about youtube?
you can use them still but create a personal connection with you and the immediate fans you get from social media and these platforms. being behind the scenes and dropping is part why this all happening they think they Gods in making celebrities
From what I understand, RUclips is much better with creators because the pay plans are worked out between the creators and the platform. Spotify is just like a corporate overlord that feels the grunts “creators” should take whatever they are given.
@@lemoncarb The threshold for payment on RUclips is WAY worse than Spotify.
Thank you for keeping it real AF Curtis! So glad to hear your opinions, thought processes and actions you've taken around these issues!
You....are a great man !!!!!!! This brings tears to my eyes !!! Thank you my brotha ❤
It's not just the companies ripping artists off - it's the people who actually listen to an artist's music too. People expect something for nothing now.
Respect Curtis. We gotta keep making noise about this. Interested to see what you do moving forward. Your paving the way. Big ups.
Thank you for your work and I agree with your sentiment but what is going to be your solution exactly? Without touring, sync and or a fully established fanbase, what are the options for someone with less than 1000 streams for a song? I'm genuinely interested in finding a solution so everyone gets what money is deserved. I hear a lot of talk on walking out of the streaming pool but not many are giving concrete remedies with a path to solid results yet. Thank you kindly. 🤙
Bandcamp will be your best friend when it comes to getting your music out there. They have a much fairer revenue sharing model than other streaming services 👍
The answer I’m looking for. , but crickets is all I hear in the comments section
try to perfomr outside more than jus focus on streams, that cash money is yours ...
Obviously performing live, merch and sync are other good forms of music income. My question was directed specifically to people telling others that they are pulling their music off of spotify. I want to know their personal solutions if that is what they really intend to do.
I used to get in a panic when streaming amounts shifted or changed as they have done since Pandora was released. I would hope others don't go in a panic and pull their catalog of potential because their song didn't make $5 in that year which is roughly 1000 streams, without a well stated alternative. Thank you though and yes performing is a great way with or without the streams. @@AlbertoGomez-oi5ou
We need to stop giving it away and start selling a product physically. We need to be more exclusive with our personality and content. Social media and streaming fucked up everything. You didn’t have 24/7 access to artist back in the day. That made fans appreciate and spend money and time with the art.
And pay 20 bucks for a CD with two good tracks and a dozen skippers. No thanks!
@@badboy69cancer albums with one or two hits are also a consequence of big labels milking a moment moreso than artists wanting to.
Been following you for years at this point and love seeing your growth 💯 Hopefully we all figure out a way to get the ball back in our court.
I support this initiative of detaching from the DSPs and think it is the best move at this point. My only thought is if one is no longer in a directly accessible platform that is mixed with other artist's content/releases then how will an independent artist drive traffic to their website for direct-to-consumer? Social media Ads and tik tok promo (that's my best idea) to drive towards mp3 downloads on artist website? What is LaRussell doing?
🫡 to you for standing up for the real bread winner on these streaming platforms. Pay us what congress says our copyrighted content is worth. Lawsuit is coming!
Thank🙏🏾You 4 this video. Truly a Wake Up call⏰. To think Spotify pays less than $40 for Ten THOUSAND streams...and that's Only if they're listened to for 30 seconds or more. You have beggars in the streets here in NYC who make that in an hour or two. Let that simmer a sec. 🤔 Some of us have spent years learning to read and write 🎶, play an 🎸🎹, learn production, and recording 🎤 and yet these streaming services would say we're worth LESS than 1Cent🪙. How insulting and how wild that we let them get away with it. The answer is that we gotta be willing to Grind. It's more work, but our Work should be...Worth It.🔥 Thanks Again for the video 🙏🏾
I saw your Bio Banner but your Music is still visible and playable on Spotify right now 😅
Not quite my friend. You do know that when you do features, that music populates on your profile, right? 🤣
@@CurtissKingTV yes i do know that, damn all these streaming platforms tryna roast us.

i mean its a cycle, the more artists leave, the less customers they get, and therefore either forced to make adjustments or complete shutdown.
I took music down for a year and a half maybe two years... just this year I only put back up the music what i had out before since I felt I didn't want to be an "Indian giver" to my fans, and it was too time consuming figuring out how to track splits and payment with other producers on music I already released. Ive had my website for over a decade and will always have my own. Using my site to release music.
I love that term, Indian Giver...
How’s that going? Are people downloading and streaming a lot from your website more than they would with a DSP?
Truth is, established artists are afraid that you're better than they are. They are listening and they don't want to share their gravy train $$$$$ with anyone.
BMI is free. ASCAP is not. Sometimes you get what you don’t pay for 😅
Major labels have big cuts in streaming services and saw that its a lot of independent artist who are making a living off of music and not signing deals with them so the best way to force them to sign is to cut their money short but that's what I believe
thanks curtiss i love vinyl and am buying a player soon cos brent faiyaz , j cole and 6lack all have music on vinyl and even cd. kids nowadays lack parenting cos they parents are stuck on phones after their 9-5 so they talk without thinking
I think the problem is the fans. How willing are they to follow up to your new chapter?
Bingo, or even pay for your music
Not all fans are the same, the trick is to not chase after the ones who are indifferent, and to focus your energies on market research to find the ones who will go out of their way to follow you, or who will at least meet you halfway.
Thanks for the perspective , I’ve published 41 tracks in edm world , been making it just for myself
Respect! I just discovered you today and I can't wait to see all that I can learn from someone so tapped into the current state of the industry. As someone that shares your values as an independent diy producer I hope to follow suit in solidarity and plan to remove my labels music from the streaming companies' sites that refuse to pay artists what is owed to them. Damn you Spotify! Also, it doesn't surprise me that BMI is pulling a move like that. I mean haven't they always been shady, greedy, take as much as possible from the artist kind of company? Fight the good fight! Love your content!
curtis, im right there with you. the one thing i can't reconcile, and i would love your thoughts on this, is that spotify has introduced me to SO many new fans. and of my current fans, many of them are on spotify meaning they would be experiencing friction to hear my music in a separate place then they hear the rest of their favorite artists.
what are your thoughts on
1. losing the advantage of spotifys algorithm as a method for increasing artist visibility
2. reducing friction for the listener such that an artist isn't lost out to a listener due to inconvenience
Dangling the bogus carrot of "exposure" whilst simultaneously massively devaluing your product and worth. Welcome to DSPs. All us musicians need to find other ways to promote and sell our music.
THIS 🎯
Your voice will be heard my friend !!! Shit will hit the fence sooner than later 💪🏻
Ryan Leslie been trying to put us on to this 20 years ago. He took is music off of streaming back then for these same reasons
The music industry is FINISHED
Was thinking of doing this exact same thing. Thank you for posting this video bro!
Nice move leaving the message on your Spotify Page!
Thank you for this post... just Subscribed... please post more about the Spotify problem. It's time to BOYCOTT SPOTIFY! This is not good for our industry and lacks motivation for our up&coming songwriters and artists. Thx.
Why is it okay for the average Joe to complain about his job and how corporate America is screwing them over. But its not okay for an artists or a creator to complain about..... idk.... Corporate America messing them up, they need to change their careers??? Wow...
As if they don't need some music to get through their shifts...
Why you angry at them? If you feel your job is taking advantage of you, organize and do something about it? You are sounding bitter because others are willing to fight for what they want while you are spineless and willing to be taken advantage of due to desperation.
Angry at others for fighting for more is crazy to me. Just sound bitter and envious.

You have to understand when Spotify first began to be able to use labels old discography labels said yes but only on the condition that they had equity in the company. So labels partially control Spotify. I feel like their hands are tied
Right on Curtiss. Speaking as one of the little guys, I have a feeling I'll be joining you. Time to make a stand.
Lots of bullying and fear mongering in this music space. It takes some real guts to go and do what’s right for you while ignoring the criticism. Respect for doing the right thing for your brand, it will pay dividends (without waiting a year for them 😭)!
Great breakdown.
I would love to connect with you on my channel soon man
I'm completely down with removing music from Spotify. That being said, I get why they had that 1000 stream threshold to try and deter bot accounts and quantity over quality, and to give themselves some time to find fake/illegal uploads before people profit off doing something illegal. The main thing to be outraged about is how godawful the payouts are, and how the whole thing is just a money pit to build clout, and only above some arbitrary threshold does it build you an audience - and also, the nature of Spotify & playlisting celebrates mediocrity and sameness for the most part. Its very hard to be really really unique and to succeed on any streaming service, so its bad for the evolution of art.
Spotify been bleeding money. They haven’t had a profitable year since it’s inception. This is just a way to prevent more losses.
on paper they aren't. Thats exactly what they want you and the government to think 😂
@@prodRegularDude exactly
Music distro sites are kinda poison. Why I started to uploading on RUclips and bandcamp only.
I respect this , this is leading by example. I’ll throw in another perspective tho, the streaming companies are still not profitable so the business itself hasn’t proven to actually be profitable.
Maybe there just isn’t money there, even if they wanted to pay artists more?
We fight for higher payouts but maybe building our own platforms is where we should our energy
The money isn't there, apple music is a loss leader but apple can pay more because they make money from all their other businesses.
@@Dihmarkomy thoughts exactly. I read somewhere that Apple accounts for music revenue under ‘misc’ 😂 doesn’t even have its own category.
So nah they don’t take it seriously
the problem is that all these streaming platforms are competing against piracy, which is theft. When its that easy to steal a product, the product has no inherent value.
Great video ! Would love to see a fairer deal for emerging artists. In the old days you might buy a cd and grow to love it over time. In these swipe left times people starting out have an uphill battle.
where does youtube sit in all this? it's a super popular platform for music and it seems like it's always left out of these conversations.
For me youtube is the only online platform i use to listen to music. The reason is all the unreleased and underground stuff. You will never find that on a typical streaming platform. Still Vinyl / CD is the best
Streaming was never meant for indie artist to do well
Well I still would keep my music in the name of reach and exposure.
One positive I have got from this is the flexibility in which I can get new music and also post mine. Well there unfortunate part where there is money they cab never be what we call fairness. Focus will be gigs from that exposure. Things when we move more into the business ethics fans suffer in terms of reach and not all are going to follow. As much as I love the art but it not a human need. Till we have full control of this but as long we put a price on it. We gonna end up like our enemy.
you dont know that, he built his platform on independent and beginning artists and a move like that might give him media exposure that could convert into RUclips subs... Trust his process
I'm with you Curtis music is a product that should be sold and this streaming stuff is bogus ,and I remember when I was younger I purchased cds all the time
I’m about to share this
We should all stick together and refuse spotify and others that treat us this way. We should create our own community where we respect eachother and make money.
This streaming was made to take away money and power from the artist. When we had record's, cassette tapes, cds, artist was able to make money upfront and IRS did not like that. This is bigger than we know.
100% they hardly pay as it is, now they want to pay less? Any musician worth his salt, especially established ones, should be standing by the little guys.
Well done man! Something should be done collectively to flip the equation.
If you sell your album on CD or Vinyl, maybe bundle it with merch, you only have to sell to a few hundred of your fans to make 4k 🤷♂ might be easier to achieve this than getting a millions of streams
I remember back in the 80s heavy metal bands would gain a small local following of super loyal fans and would make a record and sell it to the small fan base for like $300 per record.
Soooo True... 🔥. We just have to be willing to put in the WORK. 💫🎶💫
Hey bro. I missed your live stream tutorial on how to make our own websites? Will you be able to upload it so we can see it please?

The creator discusses removing their music from Spotify due to new payout threshold requirements, expressing concerns about ethical misalignments, the disparity in payouts among streaming services, and the evolving landscape of the music industry, sharing their decision to stand in solidarity with DIY artists and emphasizing the need for fair compensation, all while questioning the motivations behind Spotify's threshold system and reflecting on the industry's changes, following the footsteps of Prince and exploring alternatives like TikTok and building personal websites.
HANDS DOWN the best vid pertaining to today’s music industry and the don’t care attitude that exists.
I think the threshold is good, I understand both sides of it but it just makes Artist have to promote they music a lot of people get lost in the sauce and forget to grow and now if you want yo music in the sauce you gotta work for it
THAT part. That's THE question... Are we willing to Work for it??? 🧐 Excellent point! 💯
Love the info and video / quality etc. You are appreciated my friend. Just sub’d. 🙌🏻💥😎
As a distrokid user I would love to be able to select the platforms that my music is being placed on
We shouldn’t support company’s that dont care about us
Let the big record labels alone use Spotify lets all post our music where we get payed
We are the ones posting links in our bio
Let’s create a new traffic direction
And stop giving them our hard work and investments to just be spit on 🤦♂️
The point of unionizing is to have collective bargaining power. We have none. Our opinions, collective or indivudual have no weight. They make no difference. No one feels pressured to appease us, that's what unions do, they offer bargaining power. We have none. Other than that I'm with you all the way.
Musicians should strike......
This is interesting. The blogging, microblogging ánd vlogging world is going through the same. We used to all host our own stuff. Then hosted platforms came, and promised a piece of the pie. And now we're going back.
Dude I'll bet you get this every day, but you have the smoothest voice I have ever heard in my life. Great video as always man
This is a great video.
I think it’s weird how establish artists are battling other artists about the stream payouts.
The BMI situation needs to be more discussed.
Far as the independent artist solution I think it’s best to have a Yt channel and a website.
I'll add this,
YOU ARE NOT NOISE! You are an artist, a person, an idea, a God! Gods rule, they don't follow.
Entertainment is NOTHING without us.
The big guys finally reached the new generation they just want to control the music industry as always
I appreciate your view and courage on the matter. I’m on board & agreement w/ you. For artists like myself, who are new and lack any sort of following it puts us in a weird place. It feels like a child in the middle of a broken home. Who can an artist trust or rely on, what steps do artists need to take to create or gain any sort of exposure (rhetorical questions on my mind) 🤔
Tryina rock the half moon part fade, but you gotta come to ny for them to get it right my dude.
You did right. It may come to where Artist /Musicians may need to go on a strike with their Music withdraw it from platforms stop posting it to earn its Value. Not right that Artists/Musicians invest money to put out projects only to be available on several platforms for free. Owners/CEOs of businesses is not investing money in their businesses to give away free products are they.
If it wasn't for "deezer"...😂😂😂😂😂😂 bro funny
I always encourage people to take their music off streaming services too, that way my stuff is more likely to get plays 😂
Preach brother!
All artists should PULL their music from streaming services, join together, and start their own streaming service (hell, a few top earning musicians could start the service that pays better royalties to artists and challenge Spotify and Pandora.)
I like your stance. Keep doing your thing.
You a righteous dude, mad respect.
Let’s all do this for real
Yo ngl this video really got me thinking, I love music and will always have passion for it and will continue to release, but I just switched my major from music management to finance so that way after I graduate college I am able to get a job or sum in case my music isn’t enough to make a livable wage
If they can’t delete you profile they may be in breach of GDPR compliance. See here: Data subject access requests force organizations to know where collected data is at all times, what information is being collected, how it's being used by whom, and when it's being accessed.
If the consumer finds an error, the organization must correct it (called "rectification"). If the customer opts to invoke their "right to be forgotten," the company must erase their data (called "erasure"). If the consumer doesn't like how their personal data is being collected and used, they can object. If your country does not comply with GDPR then they may comply with CCPA in which you can still ask for deletion of your information in the US.
If I were asking for such a request I would do it in writing either by email or by mail or both. They have 10 days to respond to receipt of request under CCPA and 45 calendar days to respond to the request with deletion.
What u said about Prince was so true. I feel like he wouldn’t have stood the current BS!
He absolutely wouldn’t. He was against digitalizing his catalogue period.
