My camera for video now with the PZ28-135. One correction, face detection DOES work in 4K excellently. What made you think at 2:47 that face detection doesn't work in 4K? Did you try it with a native Sony/ZEISS lens?

@@MaartenHeilbron definitely a challenge to keep up with those types of nuances on Sony cameras. JUST when you think you know all the exceptions, a new firmware comes out and changes things up.. Great starting point for video. Any recommendations of getting a7R3 and a9 footage to come out similarly? I bring both into wilderness and when I'm shooting wildlife, I film with my a7R3; then when I shoot landscapes, I film with my a9. I've been using S-Log2 for many years and am comfy with properly exposing in the field so that post grading is good, and more recently I have been really like HLG-3 (been dabbling in BT.2020 more). But with the lack of picture profiles in the a9, I'm wondering what settings to go with on my a7R3 that would match what ever the a9 uses by default (I typically just keep the creative style at Std, since I normally use a customized PP7 or PP10 profile on the a7R3)...
If they must match, then I recommend choosing colour settings that don't require or include the picture profile settings. The creative style Natural, maybe with some adjustments to colour and sharpness might provide the best results.

I tried to write down all the good points you made. I am taking a Basic Video Camera class and will be making my first movie with sound. Here is what I wrote. Feel free to correct anything I wrote in correctly from listening to you. Make sure you have the latest firmware. Set Focus Ring to AF-S or AF-C. set recording mode to Standard. Set the power off Temperature to high. turn Touch Operation on - and it only works for focus, but that is perfect for Video. Set Exposure to Manual - Use XAVC S HD- use 4 K if you have the space and computing power to handle that format. 30 frames 50 MB. AUTO ISO. for performers on a stage use High Light Metering Mode to keep performers from being overexposed with a spotlight for most situations MULTI, auto face recognition will not work in 4 K. Unless y ou are using a tripod, using the viewfinder will make your shots steadier. Turn Steady Shot off if you are using a tripod.On Movie Screen 2, Audio Recording is ON and Audio Level display is ON, Check that the level is 26. On Screen 3 use the Shutter Button for recording instead of the RED recording button. Turn on Movie w/shutter to ON. Press DISP to get to displays you like on TAB 2, screen 6 and independent for Monitor and the Finder. Options are ALL Options and level (histogram). Set that shutter dial to 1/60 or if dark 1/30. Set Aperture to F4 on the 70-200 mm lens. Select Flexible spot: M works. Set a Custom WB with TAB 1 Screen and choose SET and aim at a Gray card and press the back of the screen to capture that exposure for your WB. 10 Choose Creative Style is Neutral. and turn down settings to -1, -1, and -3 lowering saturation in particular. When the lens does not zoom in enough, Choose Screen 1 tab 1 & set by turning APS-C Super 35 mm ON to crop the image in or use TAB 5 to Image 5 choose Zoom Settings On: Clear Image Zoom. If you use Zoom - don't use it while recording as it is bumpy. It is easier to assign it to a Key or button on the back of the camera. On Tab 2, Screen 8, it is easier to assign the zoom to a custom key for quick access. SET C1 to focus Magnifier & Use an external audio and mixer. if you do, you will need to keep the audio levels down to 10 or less. You can eye ball exposure or use Zebra. Set Zebra to 100. Zebra alerts to any area that is overexposed. set the ISO manually until the Zebra strips are eliminated or minimized. Tabe 2, Screen 3 to set the MARKER SETTING -ON 80% Safety Zone. For better Audio, use an external mixer and microphone and connect it to the Mic In Jack turn levels down to 10 or less. Auto ISO because lighting onstage is variable. As it is continually making adjustments, it maybe harder to edit. Battery lasts 2 hours but the camera can be powered using USB. If you are going to do this regularly, go to My menu and set your own settings. I was glad to know you could make a custom button for starting the video instead of that awful red button. Also, I am not family with setting up a Custom Menu with my Sony a9II as I also do Focus Stacking Still Macro Photography, and would need to be able to switch between video and Photos
While I did not check your comment against my script, that sounds right. In would recommend that you do a test recording before any important events to make sure you’ve got the settings you need. As for using the custom settings - only you can determine which settings are most valuable and useful for you..

Thanks for your kind words, appreciated. To set the focus mode, press the Fn button, select the focus settings and the option that you want - in video only AFC and manual are available. Then set the area, which is the option beside focus mode.

Thanks for this video! I like your style and direct approach. I recently purchased a 1dxii, but returned it due to it being an international version. With money in hand again, I am reconsidering my choices. I am likely going to by an a9. My primary focus is videography, but I also really love photography. I want the best, in both areas. Could you please point me to a body (any brand) that does both photo and video better than the a9? While I'd be happy with the A9, I think the A7 III is a better choice, leaving some money to invest in lenses.

So basically there is not full auto option to independent control shutter, iso, aperture?
Maybe I don't understand the question, but basically, this camera has a complete suite of auto options for exposure, including an AutoISO mode that works in M (manual exposure) mode, as well as focus in addition to the full and complete complement of manual settings.
I think what FK wants is P (Program) exposure mode in video with Auto ISO. Absolutely the best option for people who love full auto videography. It works surprisingly great. Maarten suggested M exposure since it gives the most delicate control of every tiny nuances of exposure. My method of auto 4K 25fps is to use S mode with auto ISI, where I set a shutter speed to 1/50 and I let the camera pick the aperture value. When I need brighter or darker view, I use the exposure compensation dial. The optimal selection of the metering mode for the scene is very important, too. As Maarten suggested, highlight is absolutely brilliant for stage videos.
Thanks for adding these thoughts. I would not recommend any video mode that did not use a fixed shutter speed.

Nice review! One quick question: in video mode how you get manual focus and then switch momentaneously holding a button to af-c like with the a7sII holding the ae-l button?
Thanks. I returned the A9 after the review so can't verify, but pretty sure you can program the AF-On back focus button to do the same.
On the A9, I'd recommend to do the other way around, keep the camera in AF-C, and when you want to freeze subject simply touch the screen for Spot Focus, press the center button to release the spot focus or tap the finger icon on the screen to go back regular AF-C.
If you insist, of course you can keep the camera in MF and when you need AF-C, just press the AF-ON button as Maarten nicely suggested. I've been using the camera since it was released, and it has the best video AF I ever seen.

Thank you Maarten. In your professional opinion, would you say the video quality, and capabilities of the A9 (with the exclusion of PP's) is on par or better than the A6500? I'm needing focus abilities and, low lighting, and I'm assuming with the FF sensor I will get cleaner footage.
As long as you leave the Slog curves out of the picture (and you should be able to live without them as long as you have situations that you can control) I would judge the A9, with the full frame sensor as superior. That said, you might be equally or more happy with the A7SII or the A7RII, and save a few dollars for a nice cinema lens.
Thanks Maarten, I already have the A9 (sold my A7rii), I just haven't had the time to do the in depth comparison. I use the A6500 with my own custom PP's based on a bunch of testing I did on my own and from a few on the web, and may just stick with that until I can do some testing. Can't afford any gotchas and there were plenty of those in the A7rii and A6500.
Pretty sure you'll find many of the same gotchas on the A9 - but let me know.
All the gotchas I've found so far were operator's error.
Thanks so much for the video! Have you found it frustrating to color grade your footage in the XAVC codec given that sony didn't give the a9 the ability to shoot in s-LOG? I'm considering using the a9 for a documentary shoot because I can get it for free, but wondering if I should rent an a7 because of s-LOG.
I appreciate your kind words. The main frustration here, as with many cameras of this generation isn't the lack of S-Log, but the low bandwidth of the video recordings - that makes any meaningful adjustments to exposure and colour degrade the image quickly. If you are renting, the A7 IV provides higher bandwidth than earlier models.

I’m trying to decide between an A9 or A7iii for video and photography at poorly lit game gigs with lightning I cannot control.
The A9 looks to be the winner except the lack of log profiles (and the price).
My main concern is banding and it seems the A9 is less likely to suffer - but the price difference is a very good lens !

I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Log profiles won't help in dark(er) situations, but the high ISOs (on both) might. I think the banding issue is over-stated, I didn't find it to be an issue. I preferred the A7III.

I see the clever camera has detected several faces around 8.30 in you film - and added boxes.
If you were recording an entire tune and wanted to swap between performers would you tap on their box ?
Not too difficult on a tripod when using the rear screen - but is there an easy (wobble free) way if hand held and using the viewfinder ?

Congrats. The screen can be set to respond (touch pad settings) when using the viewfinder. You can also use the joystick to position the focus point, although face detect will sometimes over-ride and may need to be turned off if you're going to use it.

Going to video and following your explanations, I cannot quite grasp how the focusing works (my fault, of course). When objects/subjects in the frame are moving back and forth do I need to follow them with the focus point (whatever it is) only? Or I need to correct pressing and holding back focus (AF-ON) button at the same time?
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. I suggest that you use touch to follow a moving subject in a video, it's the easiest way. Moving the focus point and using AF-On is an other option.

Of course there is. But if touch function is disengage or wide focus area (instead of zone, center, spot, etc.) is set, what is the best way to keep in focus whatever I need? (sorry for my slow-wittedness)
Why are you making it so difficult? Turn on touch don't use wide focus area.

Thanks for informative video. I transitioning from Canon to Sony A9. I am trying to figure out why I am unable to open videos on my computer as I could with Canon. Am I saving them in wrong (defalt) format? Or do I need use special to read video files from SD card?

Just purchased for traveling a APSC 18-135 sony great little lightweight lens. Just one question in 4k and 100 fps there is no cropping which is great.. but if 4k uses the whole sensor why. Thanks, guys.
The video crop, when needed and used is often a function of the ease of conversion from the larger resolution of the sensor to the smaller pixel dimensions of the video. Manufacturers choose a crop to reduce the amount of binning and line skipping needed.

I appreciate the kind words. I would use the 30p setting. The way I see it, if the data rate is the same the lower frame rate gets more data per frame. Most video is 30fps, 24 is the cinema frame rate.

I generally do not, and unless you need the ability to do some slo motion (you can probably get reasonable 1/4 speed with 60fps) I don't see the value.
Every setting has its supporters, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Cinema Writer, can you post an example where 60fps gives these "immediacy and intensity" characteristics to a video? I am terribly interested.
What if i want to shoot Raw or i want to get Flat Colored File in video???

as we all know there's no slog thing in this camera.
There is no consumer camera that records raw video. Raw and flat are different - flat or neutral settings simply record the images without the processing that the manufacturer feels shows off your footage the best, but it is of course, a very generic adjustment. I would not miss SLog in this or any camera if all I wanted to do was colour correct or colour grade in post. SLog (as implemented in consumer cameras anyway) is useful primarily to increase the apparent dynamic range when you're shooting in bright sunlight, or other conditions where there is a dynamic range larger than the standard profile allows.
If you plan to adjust colours in post - first, get the colours as close as possible in camera, using the creative style menu. Start with neutral, possibly reduce the contrast and sharpness. You can also make some colour adjustments using the white balance colour adjustment panel. Making dramatic changes to the image in post - remember video is highly compressed 8-bit - will not turn out well. ruclips.net/video/1P8pIKYBmP0/видео.html
Great video Maarten, I am quite new to using a flat profile when filming and have always used a standard picture profile. I want to learn to grade video to gain more knowledge and experience in that field. I own the A9 and A7iii. Sometimes I take the A9 and leave the A7iii at home and a lot of users hate the fact that the A9 doesn't have S-LOG. You mention that you won't miss S-Log in the A9. Can you explain the difference between S-Log and flat? I have set the A9 to the neutral profile and turning down the contrast, saturation and sharpness to minimum. Essentially is S-Log and a neutral/flat profile the same thing or does S-Log offer more dynamic range?

With the PAL setting you will be limited to multiples of 25. Switch to NTSC for multiples of 30.

I know how to increase the contrast and saturation in premier, but how to increase the sharpness? When you turn them down, and increase the level needed in post, do you get higher dynamic range?
I don't use Premiere, so don't have the answer to your question. Adjusting the contrast and saturation either in camera or in post will not increase dynamic range.

What is the battery life on video mode in minutes
That depends on a great many factors, (temperature, start/stop, battery age) so it's not possible to be precise. Figure about 120 minutes of continuous recording per charge. But remember that it is possible to power the camera from USB, which does extend the life substantially.

Is the anyway of seeing what ISO the camera has selected when in video recording mode. you can see this in photo mode by light press on the shutter button. thanks for any help guys.
I don't think there is, but maybe one of my viewers knows better. In general, if you do want to know and if you're wanting a little more control, using manual ISO might be the better option.
can you suggest a setting to have a file that is more keen on being graded and toned to mix with a7r3 and rx100 v? i mean something that can emulate slog, so lowering satuiration and contrast and...i don't know. thank you in advance!
Even on the A7R III and the RX100 V I would not recommend SLog unless you are in an unavoidable situation with a very high dynamic range. On those cameras I would suggest that you select one of the cinema gamma curves, along with the colour setting you prefer - maybe reduce the saturation and detail slightly.
That's not possible on the A9, but using the neutral creative style, with reductions in saturation and detail is about as close as you will get.

Hey! I photograph dogs in action with my a9
I am ordering a dji rsc 2 gimbal for it as I want to begin capturing video of these dogs in action.
How would I nail focus on the face in video when the dog is running straight at me and jumping over obstacles? There will be certain parts i'd want to slow down certain parts of the footage, such as the dog clearing a tree log in the forest etc.

I have no idea about the a9 and video. If there's specific things I should be adjusting, like focus modes instead of the real time tracking etc then I'm not sure. Sorry another question on the white balance grid is there a way of converting the values to colour temp ie 2000k
When it captures the custom white balance, the K is displayed.
Unfortunately, it will not go below 2500 k but seems to go lower with the white balance grid but no indication of temperature. thanks for all your help.

When shooting video on my a9II, the camera is creating a still frame automatically. Can I turn this off?
Unless you're referring to the thumbnail created for the playback index, you can turn it off. In the menu it's called "Dual Record". Hope this helps.

That depends what you're looking for. If you're wanting to control colour, contrast, etc you can use Sony's Creative Styles, which offer multiple presets and extensive controls. If you want a log profile to capture an extended dynamic range, the A9 does not offer that.
How can I stop the camera from focusing automatically and constantly? I have AF-S and mode Video. TA
Change to manual focus mode. AF-S is automatically switched to AF-C when you switch to video.

That is correct. It's either manual or continuous. Neither the shutter nor the AF key will focus in manual focus mode.
How do you color grade with a9
Start with a high quality recording, then use the tools you'd prefer (DaVinci is probably your best bet) to create the grade you want. If you have access to an external recorder (as the internal quality isn't so good) you might consider shooting with S-Log.
when i shoot with my a9 in day light with bride dress light is goes very up and face is in normal light how can i set this problam
This is not a problem that's unique to the A9. Typically you'd address these kinds of lighting challenges with a well-aimed off camera flash. Alternately, I would expose for the face and fix the dress in lightroom. Hope this helps.

Is it working properly when you're in stills mode? There are a variety of things that might cause it (I don't remember them all) maybe try resetting or re-initializing.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks...yes it works perfectly in still photography. Hate to do a reset but I guess that is the main thing to try first. It would be great if one could save all settings to your sd card and then reload them if you wish after a reset?
@@tinplater Although later models have a Save/Reset menu option, the A9 does not. However, the settings you can save using Recall camera settings might work - on the other hand, they might also save the settings you'd like to reset.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. The settings are in the camera. LUTs to set the footage are available with any google search.
The sony a9 is an excellent camera but the biggest problem of it for video makers and the sony itself hides that from the users is not having the option of s-log. It is simply unacceptable a camera with this price and it is said that it is to record videos do not have this option ..... because Sony does not release a firmware with s-log ..... and now launches a new camera cheaper with s-log (sony 7r III) This is called lack of respect with your customers
While I do agree with you, and don't understand why Sony would not include the feature here - unless it's a marketing decision to hold onto to that for a A9 version that's better suited for video. However, I'm not sure that SLog is a feature that's very useful on a camera that doesn't shoot RAW. In my mind, I'd much rather have a higher data rate and HVEC in a camera that doesn't have RAW than SLog.
I think there's a mis-conception that using SLog signifies your status as a pro videographer, or that SLog is some magic that makes your footage better. In the case of Sony's consumer cameras, neither of those is true.
The A9 has so new sensor that Sony is still working on the S-Log on this sensor. Rumor says that the Sony Full-Frame Cine Alta Venice camera has the same sensor as the A9. I can say the color science of the A9 is significantly different than earlier versions of the A7 line. The A7RIII has the old sensor from A7RII ready with S-Log.

In my experience, the electronic zoom (as opposed to the optical zoom with the lens) is usable for video up to 2x without visible degradation.
Thanks, i am using a sony 18-135 APS C Lens giving amazing zoom range (i mainly do video) and such a small package.. one trick I have found is if you use the camera in full frame mode and zoom in a little you can get a wider shot from the APS C Lens.

No. The A9 does not support any picture profile gamma curves. There are, at present, no consumer still cameras with video recording capability that can shoot RAW video.The best possible quality is achieved using an external (Atomos) recorder.
How do you cancel the noise from a lens focusing while video
Either by using manual focus or by using an external microphone.

The display only appears in video mode, and you may have to cycle through to have it display. No explanation for input level changing - when does that happen, when the camera is powered off, or it just doesn't take?
Let's just say, if you're going to be serious about audio, you'll want to record externally - the Tascam DR-70D that I use is very affordable and quite pro.

How to shoot slow motion with a9?
Either use the XAVC-S HD format and shoot at 120 to create the slow motion in editing, or use the S&Q settings with a high frame rate and a low record setting.

It's limited to 30 minutes. As of April 2019, the only Sony hybrid camera without a time limit is the A6400.
