I have owned a 2007 Jaguar S-Type 3.0. The car is brilliant! Still turned heads and is the most reliable car I've owned. At 77, I've owned a lot of foreign & domestic. The S-Type beats them all!
I had 3 Jags ,they are anything but reliable 😂😂

@@MG-ce3dx I've owned my Jag for 7 years. When I bought it, it had 52K , now, 97, 352 miles. In the 7 years, I have replaced the tires, battery & rear brakes, except for regular oil changes; that's it. I live in a condo, so the Jag is exposed to all kinds of weather. I don't drive it much in the winter, but when I do, it always starts right up. When I hit 96K, I brought it in for a 100k check. I did have to replace some bushings, the drive belt, and the front & rear control arms. My mechanic said I could probably get another 20k before I had to replace the control arms, but I figured I do it now. When I picked the car up, I jokingly said, "So it's good for another 100k & he said absolutely. Maybe I'm just lucky. Edmunds gives the 2007 S type a 4.9 rating. You must have bought shitters, I've had 6 in the last 21 yrs and no major drama's just the usual consumables such as pads discs flex pipes and ball joints so nothing to complain of.
You're kidding yourself! The S-Type is not a real Jag and is the ugliest of any Jag ever made. The only reason it turns heads is to see what type of idiot would drive one and think it's nice?
I bought a black 1999 S-Type with the 3.0 V6 engine last summer, mileage is relatively low (155.000 km). It has been my dream car ever since I was a kid, I'm 22 now. The car looks elegant and different from other cars. The ride quality is superb, very much compareable to the BMW 5-Series (F10) in my opinion. It has only been driven during the summers by the previous owners and I plan to keep it that way. The car was rust-proofed and the rear subframe was replaced just before I bought it. I only have one major problem with the car and it is the AC. It blows cold air to one side and hot air to the other 😅 Otherwise it works like a dream 😄
About 6 months ago I bought a 2001 S Type 4.0. with 13,000 original miles at a auction online. Funny but in the pics it looked like a Mist Green but it really was a Seafrost Metallic.The car would have looked super in a Mist Green. I might even paint it a Mist Green BUT the interior is perfect,the exterior is perfect and it seems the biggest prob was the inside of the door frames about rust. It seems the paint job could have been better but that is what you get from Ford,,the car is just a classic gorgeous looking car that is great to drive. The wood steering when is the best I have ever felt and I just love the car. It's rides like a mini Rolls extremely smooth and much much quieter that the cars of today,. Every time I look at it ,I say what a gorgeous car to look at.The lines will never get old.
Hello, thank you for a nice review, have two S-Types, both X202 (2002.5) 4.2 v8 & 2.5 v6, reliable cars and pleasure to drive, very comfortable, I would say the best 20 years old Jag for daily driving. Also have an early 1968 XJ6 4.2 Series 1 in original condition, did almost 3000 miles since last year :) Kind regards from Prague

I love the S type Jag, a friend of mine had one and he loved it as well, it did feel like a Jag.
I agree the style isn’t to everybody’s taste but it’s still a nice car, the issues my mate had were mainly electrical and the gearbox kept leaking oil, in the end it developed so many faults he ended up selling it for spares as it become uneconomic to repair, the S type is certainly on my “bucket list” of cars to own for sure.

Hi JJ. I love these cars. I have 2.7 diesel in a 57 plate. You mentioned in your video that that all the engines are chain driven. The 2.7 has belts. I replaced bot the timing belt and the high-pressure fuel pump belt a few months ago because I couldn't find any evidence of them being changed in the service history.
Mine has the 6-speed auto and it probably one of the smoothest and most quiet cars I have ever driven. Loads of power and it is no slouch away from the lights. The interior is perfect given that it is now showing 95,000 miles on the clock. I have had a few problems though. The heater control valve jammed in the on position and the Aircon wasn't working. On mine the valve is buried behind the left side of the front bumper.
Getting the rusty bolts out of the under panels and the driver side wheel arch, was an experience to say the least.
The valve has 5 pipes all with spring clips and no room to move. I got it done but used up a month's supply of bad language in the process.
The Thermostat housing which has no thermostat in it, which is situated on the top of the engine between the cylinder heads decided to crack.
A new one from EBAY for £30 fixed that but you do have to do some mining to get at it. I used to have a Mazda 6 with a 2.2 Diesel in it. The DPF system in that destroyed the engine. My jag also has a DPF system but to ensure it doesn't get the opportunity to kill this engine. I blanked off the EGR's on both turbos which has made absolutely no difference to the emissions, and it just passed an MOT in the middle of July.
While I was doing that, I noticed that one of the O rings on the throttle body was allowing engine oil to leak on the top of the engine, so I changed that too. Parts for these are available in many places. My usual go-to for parts apart from EBAY is autodoc.com. I wanted Daco belts for mine because that's what Jaguar/Ford fitted originally. Locally the best price I could get on just the cam belt and the pulleys were around £500. I got everything including the fuel pump belt and tensioner pulley for just over £200 from Auto Doc. It takes a week to arrive but it's worth the wait.
I used my car a few weeks ago to go and pick up my boss and bring him into work as his car was being serviced. He said that now I have this Jaguar. Nothing else will do. I think he is right. Great video by the way. Liked and subbed.
Thank you, and thanks for all the info! That's hilarious that the EGRs don't even make any difference to the emissions, It's always the modern emissions stuff that messes these diesel engines up.
Best keep it for many more years, it's going to be hard to find modern replacements for cars like these, the same goes with my Mercedes CLK. Cheers, and good work on keeping your S-Type going :)

@@nickzourb190 Firstly because there is no 'set age' as to when a car becomes classic and secondly because cars like the CLK (normally aspirated 6/8 cylinder coupes that are fairly simple and attainable) are not available new any more.

I've been through over 18 cars in my time, last 16 years 2 x Jag, S-Type 3.0, best of all. 1st 368,000 km, 2nd 344,000 km still good and fun to drive, apart from an MG B and an SLK AMG.
You should try the updated x202 with the 6 spd auto. I had one and loved it so much. I had better seats with lombard support and everything. Mine was a 3.0v6 which is perfectly moving the car. I hated the service bills but i ended up forgiving everything to the car after the second corner. People constantly gave me good compliments wherever i was. Beautiful timeless designe what will never fading away.

hey JJ, I have a 2002 post interior facelift (it was in May 2002, not 2003) 3.0 V6 manual in British racing green. I love the car and the post facelift seats are very comfortable even for longer periods of time. I actually use it as a daily driver and it returns around 22 mpg. Not too bad. I love everything about the car, mostly the rear end, especially the round taillights. Great review by the way!

A bit out of place in these comments, but you're not alone in that opinion :) Honestly I agree that crossovers are not a good solution, and hopefully they are a phase, but so far it's a trend that won't seem to die. I miss all the saloons and coupes that these companies used to make
Hello jj , very nice video , I own a 2000 3litre petrol and I have to say that it's the most comfortable car I ever owned. I have to disagree for the seats you complained about, I had the same complain when I first got it, but eventually I fixed them and now I enjoy sitting there.

I started to play with the buttons, and finally I found the one that regulates the back,which was too tight when I got it. After finding the right position of the rest, the seat is more comfortable than my leather office chair. In addition I do like the fact that the seat is low and your legs are stretched to the pedals, it's pretty comfortable for me

I have had 6 in total ( two were just parts cars). I sold my first 3.0 after 2 years and bought an E61 530D, 8 months later I dumped the BMW and bought a 4.0 S-type... I have always found the seats very good, 350 mile trips and I can get out at the other end without needing physio. the 2.7D is belt driven, has DPF issues and unless your doing lots of miles is not worth the worry. Presently I have a 4.2 , on a motorway run she will return 37MPG , but she does drink a bit round town,
Wow, that's a lotta S-Types 😄 I'm glad to hear that the seats are alright for you! 37MPG is hugely impressive. Generally a good rule about diesels - if you're not doing much miles, avoid them. I'm yet to own a diesel of any sort personally :)

Thanks for this review JJ. My Dad worked at Jaguar in this period. The Jaguar guys HATED Ford. Ford dictated everything and they forced cheap parts and shortcuts everywhere but they did fix reliability and QC. My Dad says that the Jag guys were horrified by what was happening to the brand and that it was being carved out and filled with Ford adequacy and that the special nature of Jaguars was being lost. I’ve never driven one of these but I did get a lift in one once. I thought it was nice but very Grandad. There was a later stripped back brutal looking sport version that I thought really made the design come alive. I’d be interested in driving that. But even as a near 60 year old this would make me feel about 90. I’m a bit OCD about rattles and speaks so I’d not be able to tolerate that. I can hear the noise in that car and it’s have to be fixed - or go. I’ve got a oldi-sh Merc convertible that’s fine 90k miles and it’s tight like a new one. Maybe review the brutal sports version if you can find one. Thanks again I enjoy your down to earth and straightforward reviews they lack pretentiousness and bullshit.
Thanks Richard, that's really interesting to hear what it was like for your dad working there. It is a bit of a shame really, reminds me of the situation with Saab and GM, I'm sure they had the exact same concerns when GM came in with all the cost cutting and parts sharing. Sad really. I know exactly what you mean about creaks/rattles - the one in this car was quite persistent. I would love to review the S-Type R if I can :) Cheers!
To be fair I reckon Ford were far better custodians of Jaguar than GM were with Saab.
@@zm321 You're right there, I mean they didn't kill Jaguar off which makes them 100% better custodians than GM!
I also worked at Jaguar at the time fo Ford ownership (1999 to 2003).
The department that I was in didn't hate Ford. It was Ford that gave the green light for Jaguar to develop their own V8 and not insist on using Ford's V8. Ford also gave Jaguar the budget to develop the all aluminium XJ saloon and XK coupe.
Additionally, Ford brought in a quality control that was lacking at Jaguar and also the financial clout if using some of the same suppliers; they would go the extra mile to develop an exhaust system for a Jaguar as they had the business of supplying Ford for exhaust.
IMO, the X-Type and S-Type were driven by Ford and not really what Jaguar needed but they also helped develop the XJ & XK cars, which were very much true Jaguars.

Recently bought a 07 S-Type R and I love 🤩🤗 it. I wasn’t ready for the looks 👀 and visits from owning this car 🤯. It’s like new , beautiful 🤩 car. My 2cents is do not tint the windows or do any mods because it will age this car. And find a good one or restore it to original. Most of them have been neglected so find a mechanic who will work on them, they’re old now and expensive to repair. I recommend the year’s with the 6sp automatic transmission.
S-Type R, very nice. Agree with you on tinting, but then I think most cars look worse with tinted windows
Yeah I’ve got one the same year, I’m in New Zealand and the car came out of Japan with very low mileage, or kilometres in this case. I’ve done a few things with it that have improved the look of it (in my humble opinion).
Had some dark gray vinyl ( almost black) put down the sides at the height of the bottom of the doors with the leaper in inserted and in a few other places that would have to be pointed out to most people.
Also had the wheels polished and that’s lifted the whole appearance immensely I reckon, there were some stone chips on the front bumper and a few on the bonnet so I got all that repainted by one of the top car painters in our city. I’ll enter it concourse if I get a chance in the future. Hope you’re still enjoying yours as they are a great car for sure.
I have one and owned it for almost 10 years now. Same version, 3.0 v6 manual. They do have a button for the lumbar maybe you could not find it?
I think the car is great. After 10 years I'm looking for something else (maybe an XJ X350 or even an XK) but I just cannot find 'an improvement' over the S-type.
Yes I can find better cars but hell they aren't 2x the price they are 5x the price. Also I find I do 25-30mpg average. Damn good car.
I really like the design, love the retro stuff. Would also buy a Fiat 500 or a Mini (I have the classic versions of those, too).
It may seem trivial but one of my favorite things was the automatic rain sensing wipers. What i disliked, two things. First was the placement of the battery in the trunk. Water would get in and cause the alarm to randomly go off while i was sleeping. Second was the cd changer in the trunk that i gave up on and replaced with an aftermarket changer. I really liked mine but even with studded snow tires it just wasn't feasible to drive during our winters here in colorado. Otherwise a winner on all counts, beautiful styling, reliable, comfortable quiet interior, ride and power delivery.
FYI the biggest change in styling after 2003 was the introduction of the wire mesh front grill.
Auto rain sensing wipers are great - when they work 😄 Sometimes can be too sensitive, or not sensitive enough. Cheers :)
Have an X reg early S Type. Strange but likeable colour, changes from midnight blue to british racing green depending on light. 90,000 miles fsh, drives like a dream, no rattles, as yet no rust (!).
Everyday. transport. Why not cos I don't do many miles but I drive a bit everyday.

Have owned the 2.7D Sport version of the S Type for the past 9 years. It was preceded in my garage by a 5 series BMW [solid and reliable] and Mercedes E Class [a money pit]. The Jag has been an adventure that still brings a smile to me face and still draws admiring glances and compliments from strangers in shopping car parks. It is great to drive, the engine and gearbox are a near perfect match and it comes into its own when asked to go long distance cruising. It has never let me down, and maintenance costs have been restricted to regular servicing, a belt change, two suspension bushes and the unavoidable [tyres, wiper blades and a battery]. It, like me is getting on a bit and it's likely to be my last car. If that proves to be the case, I shall die a happy man, having loved my Jag!
Good to hear it has been reliable, have to say having the Merc come out worst of those three cars is surprising, but perhaps you just had a bad one. Long live the S-Type, a pretty underrated car!
Merc was the 3.2L W210. Need I say more? The list of problems was long and costly [injectors, sensors, window winders and more - not to mention rampant tin-worm]. I gave it every chance to redeem itself, but couldn't hide the costs from the lady wife anymore. Maybe that experience has made me appreciate the Jag's good behaviour.

Hi JJ. Yeah, I'm aware that the design of the S Type divides opinion. For me, it and it's more modest cousin, the Rover 75, looked beautiful then and still do now. That retro styling really does it for me and when I retire and am wanting a bit of a treat for weekend jaunts, the S Type would be just the ticket...haven't told the current Mrs. Shaw this yet 🤫
When this and the 75 came out - I think I would have been 11 or 12, and I really didn't like the look of them. But as with many of these interesting 90's designs I have definitely warmed to it over the years, and the S-Type is now a really cool and unique car. I'm definitely not the first to say that I think the S-Type has aged better than the 75, yet the 75 looked better (more modern) at the time. You should totally go for it, and perhaps keep the CT aside if you can for the economy runs and daily duties 😄

If you don't know what you are looking for, take someone who does.
Don't spend your whole budget on any car, no one sells anything with nothing wrong with it unless it's being kicked out of a ULEZ zone.
Now might be a good time to pick one up.

Have just watched your video. I have had two of these wonderful cars. I had the first (2003 auto) for many years and sold it because I succumbed to the urge of an XE. I still own the XE but really needed to have another S type which I purchased recently. It is a late 2002 with just 37k - just one owner from new and garaged all of it's life. to be honest, I much prefer it to the XE - just a different way of driving - really wafty and relaxing. Both of my S types are the face lift models. I never liked the dash on the early models and I did not like the plastic moulding along the middle of the doors. I have always been unhappy with the original plastic grilles which I think give the car a rather odd 'face' so I have changed them for the mesh grille. The main issue with these cars is to keep on top of mechanical issues. If you cannot afford to have them looked after properly - do not buy one - they do bite if not maintained correctly.
That's interesting that you're not as much a fan of the XE. I guess really the XF is the more suitable replacement, but the S-Type is just so much more old-school charm than the newer Jags. 37k is super low mileage :)
I had an s type , I was known as the girl with the jag in highschool lol. I went on to have an xj super v8. There’s something about the stype , I rarely ever see one on the road where I live but when I do , just like the 04-09 xj8 , your eyes go right to it. With the front end and all the lines in the hood. It looks like it’s just gracing thru, you immediately know what it is. It’s the same when I see a 06-11 Mercedes CLS, it gives that same presence for my eyes to be drawn to , they are not your “run of the mill cookie cutter on wheels” all 3 are absolute gorgeous cars!

I had one of these in the same colour. It was a lovely car but the ever increasing cost of fuel made it an expensive vehicle for mostly round town driving that I do so I sold it.

I'm a massive fan of Jaguars but have to concede that the BMW E39 was probably a better car overall.
It's often the way isn't it. British cars have charm, but they're not always quite as well engineered as German cars

I was never so much of a fan of the S-Type, The styling was a bit too pastiche. Furthermore, unlike the E39, it wasn't available with the smaller diesel or petrol, which were probably the biggest sellers for BMW.

I've gpt a 2005 S Type R. Lovely car but wish I was a mechanic who could restore it to full condition bit by bit. I haven't found the right mechanic yet.

@@JJonCars The Rover was a better drive, felt more classy. 1.8T conny had good performance and 40 mpg on runs.

The original dashboards on these were pretty bad. That’s a stock Ford radio. It just didn’t have any grace to it overall.

Well I wouldn't recommend the X200 or 202s but by X204 they were as sorted as they were going to be. My 204 runs a treat and doesn't rattle and squeek at all and no road noise as is evident in the model you're driving. If anyone is thinking of buying one then purchase the youngest you can find with encyclopædic history etc..and you may just find a nugget.
The road noise might be my microphone - have upgraded since and things sound quieter. Good to hear that there are no squeaks creaks or rattles though
