  • Orson Welles’ electrifying adaptation of “War of the Worlds” aired 80 years ago. On Halloween 1938, it was reported that millions of people swarmed the streets in panic thinking aliens had invaded Earth. What really happened? We explain.
    Six-year-old Bob Sanders was not fooled by the Halloween Eve broadcast of The War of the Worlds of 1938.
    “Dad said, ‘Sit down and enjoy. Something unusual is going to happen,” said Sanders to Gannett NJ in 2013. “And it did.”
    Martian invaders had landed in Grovers Mill, according to the radio program, which included disclaimers that many other listeners missed.
