Grandma and Grandpa were living in East Orange, New Jersey at the time and we're playing cards and listening to another station, they woke-up the next morning only to read the headlines. 😆 i did play my Old Time Radio Reruns of War of the Worlds for Grandma and she was pretty enraptured by it. ❤
Belgium broadcasters did, in the '90s, went live to announce that the northern part of the country declared unilaterally it's independence. A lot of people thought it was true, down to the Crown Prince, then on a Asian tour.
It still sounds real listening to it today and the two or three remakes from The Buffalo station here in New York in 1968, 1971, and 1973. All the broadcasts are here on RUclips.
@michaelmcwilliams4380: I first heard WOTW in spring 1971 when I was at college. I woke up in the middle of the night and the broadcast was already in progress (I always sleep with my radio on) and I must admit, it caught me off guard for about a minute. My family used to talk about the old radio shows when I was growing up and it dawned on me that this must be the famous WOTW. So, for about a minute or so, I, too, was caught up in the spell of “War Of The Worlds”.
What is so tragic about this broadcast is that (in its German version) quite a few people pannicked and committed suicide because of it.... No blame to all the actors involved - noone could have anticipated this.
Why do I think I"ll learn something new from these videos? What type of programs did the Mercury Theater of the Air broadcast before this one? Weren't they also radio plays? Didn't Wells end the broadcast by saying it was his attempt at jumping out from behind the bushes and saying Boo! to CBS? So the newspapers went out of their way to eggagerate the affect of the fake show by creating fake stories of their own? Also, if you actually listened to the broadcast, towards the end it wasn't this attack that was on the air but Wells all by himself talking to another survivor of the invasion and how they conduct themselves. A run of the mill radio play. It would have been nice if there was an interview of someone who actually had heard the broadcast back then.
I wonder how many of you remember hearing your parents talking about this. As a result we never had a TV and the only music listened to was healing songs or cultural. We got a tv late seventies but was always reminded to not believe everything you hear or see on the box. Sometimes the contents are just "rekidulous", And this is why we today stockpiled toilet paper when COVID Plandemic Broke out. Fear and ignorance and money can influence common sense. Check it out. This wasnt a hoax it was a performance...an innovative performance
The woman towards the end who says we're less likely to believe these outrageous things today doesn't get out much.

I heard Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast on AFVN Radio when I was serving in Vietnam.
They're probably gonna do it again. 21st century version 👽👿
They already did. With the 'pandemic'...
Already started.

The fact it was an accident makes it all the more impressive. And says alot about the general public.

@gterrymed: The 1968 Buffalo remake is awful.

Any documentary on the man who stole Portugal. Alves dos Reis.
How can this be considered a hoax when they so obviously announced it was an adaptation of H.G. Wells.
It's not a hoax. They're are just trying to confuse the masses to enslave us.
This was hands down the best CD (from Jeff Wayne) i ever bought. Still playing it. 😍
I love the Jeff Wayne version.
_"The more things change the more they stay the same." This is a great footnote in our history.

Jason Robards played the Orson character in a 1988 production.
So the panic was the hoax.
ah loved the ending there😅
It reminds me of the Blair witch movie. So many people thought it was real. Even though some of the actors. Have been. In other movies. William s
That broadcast was the 1930's version of safe and effective.
The upcoming election in the US 2024 is so similar to this. Imagine a convict for President......
Imagine an 80+ year old senile old man who cant even speak a full sentence without making a mistake.
