It’s almost unbelievable how sensitive and accepting this cartoon *from 1947* is not just towards blind people but towards women, girls, Irish, Italians, and even single moms. It’s beautiful.
There's a lot more of that in these older movies and from that decade than you might think. While that period of time was far from perfect and was filled with a lot of racism, sexism, and a lot of other craziness, there were a lot of good people as well. You can even see it in Twelve Angry Men when one of the jurors went off on a rant about 'them' (which I think was supposed to be Hispanic people) and the others just stopped listening to him because they thought he was being an idiot.
I remember skipping when I was younger because it was too sad for me. This is probably the reason why I love raggedy Ann so much now. They depict the way blind people visualize and hear in such a beautiful and unique light, instead of showing it only as a problem. This was very ahead of its time to be this accepting.
Do you know what sad is they don’t do that anymore. I should know because I’m blind and I’ve never seen a cartoon or movie that depicts people like me the way that this does which is why I still love it to this day and don’t even get me started on the song that raggedy and sings to the little girl that’s just downright beautiful.
I love most of us thought this was super sad as kids but it's it so wholesome it's almost sickening. The music and beautiful message. Soft technicolor animation. Whole neighborhood feeling so realistic and tight knit and then turning into this wonderland of a child's imagination. This short is amazing and needs more love and attention. And yes this short did make me sad as a kid, I would cry every time ragdey Ann would start singing
I think this was the first cartoon I'd ever seen. I was a small girl, and I related so much to Billie. It's hard to see the world sometimes, so you just gotta look with your heart.
My grandma had a vhs with old paramount classics on it years ago and this was one that was on it. I had a vague recollection of what it was about and put it on to show my kids. Bawled my fricken eyes out!
My Nan had this on VHS to. I secretly used to shed a tear as it always used to get me thinking of how blind people see the world even through they can't see. It's a really well made cartoon with a very powerful story. You really don't see that in most modern day cartoons.
I think I remember watching this when I was really young. I couldn't remember the name of this vid and I was just thinking about it recently. this makes my day; thanks for bringing it back to my life. 😊
The first time I ever saw this cartoon was on a public domain VHS tape, featuring a worn-out NTA print of the cartoon. Later on, I sometimes wondered if there ever would be a highly restored version of it, and now, there is. I highly commend you for your work in making this cartoon look and sound so much better so that future generations can get a better idea of how it appeared in its initial theatrical release.

“The Enchanted Square” was written by animation director Orestes Calpini and background artist Shane Miller. As such, it is a very visually driven cartoon with almost Disneyesque quality of animation.
I don’t know who went through the trouble of cleaning this up, but thank you whoever did because this cartoon is great. It’s freaking great only I don’t get what people say that they cry. I don’t find it. Sad I find it cute and adorable.

This is probably one of the most acclaimed cartoon shorts to ever come out of by Paramount’s Famous Studios and it’s a shame this and most of the other Famous standouts(including the other Raggedy Ann short From 1944,some of the best Popeye shorts from 1942-1948 and a few ones from 1949 and the 50’s including 1953’s 3D Popeye,The Ace of Space, several Casper and Herman and Katnip standouts and The Superman shorts)weren’t ever nominated for a Acadamy award for Best Animated Short film compared to Fleischer Studios and George Pal’s Puppetoon shorts. Poor Famous.
@@jrgensaint-croix1817 It was a TV distributor back in the 1950’s and continued through the 1970’s until it got folded into Republic Pictures in the 1990’s.
@@jrgensaint-croix1817NTA was the TV distributor that Paramount sold their pre-November 1950 cartoons to. Not just the TV rights, but the copyrights to the cartoons altogether. NTA’s prints often ended up being in poor quality, and they were ordered to remove Paramount’s name from the cartoons, so they did so by shoddily covering it up with black bars. Unfortunately, some cartoons are only available in their NTA versions. NTA’s successor ended up being bought out by Paramount many years later.
Typically for Famous Studios, they miss so many dramatic possibilities of a little blind girl wandering around her shabby street (which would get gentrified in the next decade) imagining it to be a magic amusement park. And the ear-piercing "You can see with your heart" at the end would set dogs howling. But it's a charming and moving cartoon, and looks dazzling it its restored Technicolor glory. Do you think Officer Flanagan likes Billie's mother a little? Halloween, everybody!
when I use to watch this episode as a youngster, I always thought that Billie's just a normal girl, but now that I keep watching it this year, I now realize that she's blind
I love this cartoon with Raggedy Ann name the Enchanted Square. and I am happy for Billie and her imagination in the Enchanted Square. Originally released into movie theaters on May 9, 1947.

Thanks for posting, Steve! This and the Popeye cartoon ROCKET TO MARS would, IMHO, be Famous Studios' best. I can't watch this or that scene in Charlie Chaplin THE KID with the police taking little Jackie Coogan from The Little Tramp without becoming a blubbering mess.
When I was little I used to taught that the little girl was playing or acting weird Never crossed in my mind (until I got my 10 years) what the sweetie was blind…
She's just too modest. She didn't believe the policeman when he told her she was pretty, because she didn't think she was pretty. Likewise, she called her daughter "silly" for saying her mother was beautiful, because the mother did not believe that her own face was "beautiful." (Or that her blind daughter could "see" it!)

Question, is Raggedy Ann magic or was this all Billie’s imagination? The fact that she’s surprised by Ann talking does kinda hint to the first.
