  • Bob Seymour demonstrates the use of the Husky 535 backpack saw for precommercial thinning in dense "backlog" spruce-fir that originated after a heavy harvest by the prior owner ca. 1990. The silvicultural prescription is to favor pine and red spruce, cutting fir, hemlock, and most hardwoods using a residual tree spacing of 8-10 feet, sometimes closer on the smaller spruce. Large 3-4" dbh firs are sometimes cut to release much shorter spruces. We have NRCS funding for this work, after proposing it in our 2019 cost-shared management plan. This is our Pinkham Brook woodlot in Bucksport, Maine, where we had a large timber harvest last fall, documented in several videos. The trail in the video was the main forwarder trail that became badly rutted, then rehabbed with an excavator and seeded early this spring. A separate video describes this operation, which was totally effective in preventing any movement of mineral soil.
See my January 2022 columnn in Maine Woodlands for a detailed review of this saw for use in silviculture.
If you're interested in buying one, they are no longer being sold in Canada where I bought mine. However, they appear to be available directly from Sweden --- try the following link:

We successfully ordered one (July 2024) and it arrived in a week from Sweden. See the more recent video in this playlist.
    Happy brush cutting!
