In this Illustrator tutorial, we’ll create this text effect using the power of the blend features in Illustrator. We can create custom text using the Pen or Pencil tool in mere moments or, in the second half of this tutorial, we’ll take a typeface and split the letters apart and find the center of each letter and apply this 3D tube effect letter-by-letter. If you like type and you like Illustrator, you’ll love this tutorial!

*Make sure you turn off any outline effect you have before choosing blend, or else it will make the color look weird.*
I just ran into this problem and was confused, but it was easily fixed so I thought I'd share.

Thanks, Nathaniel, learned a plethora of things. SInce you can't please all of the followers all of the time, here is my wrench toss. I like that this vid was long. I need the time to correlate the steps. We learn best with frequent repetition. You balanced between the fine line of tedious and the necessary process required to cement concepts. You may rarely go wrong if you aim for the masses of us who are not pros. Pros have other resources they can unearth, though I did appreciate the comments a few of them offered as clarification or FYI additions. This is exactly the effect I wanted to learn this week and I did not have to "pause" once! I will review it when I actually try it the first time. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Constance, USA. PS: Big thumbs up also for 9-year-old Dillion...bet he is way better than me (my kid was when she was 3 and is a whiz as an adult).

I was able to give the line strokes of each letter a much curvier look using the smooth tool, i find it easier than going in to adjust the curves point by point using the direct selection tool

RE: Dave: For Review and Pro Viewing: Consider a (synopsis) version that is an edit of the current lesson.Take each action and show it as a still with a *list of the steps used to achieve it (as if you are designing a script). For simplicity, this version might have an intro for the masses that shows an icon of the controls used (a map key). The narrative you give in the original identifies these as you use them (mostly), so there is no further need to show them in the actual "Review/ Synoptic) version.
From an old time educator, Constance.
*Use text with a time reference point from the original.

When I replace spine with my blend it doesn't seem to go around the whole spine. In this case, an outline of the letter "K", seems to go around 75% of the letter and then stop. Any idea's why it's not completing? So strange.

When zoomed in, the blend doesn’t look all that smooth 😏. Tried to do a wire effect for a pull-up banner, and when scaled to a larger format, the blend-steps become visible.😞 Maybe for display purposes or small scale printing this could work, but not for large format.😏
