      Mr. Larocque, my young daughters discovered Tangled the Series on Disney+ in November; since then, the episodes have been on heavy rotation in our house. We were so disappointed to discover that there wouldn't be a continuing story (spin-off) for Cass' journey ahead. My girls listen to the soundtracks almost daily, but my older child (a Kindergartner) continues to find new things to admire about the animation each time she watches an episode; the subtle changes in the characters' expressions, the backgrounds, the details. Thank you for infusing so much love into each scene, but particularly for bringing such vulnerability to the female leads Raps and Cass. It's a show I wholeheartedly enjoy watching with my girls.

    Nothing Left to Lose is basically the endgame song of the show. Varian has his own villain song from an earlier season and he gets a redemption arc, which is why he is singing to Cass. It's basically Cassandra's No Good Deed.
    In very brief summary, Rapunzel's magic came from the healing power of the sun drop. There was also a moonstone that had destructive power and Rapunzel has to find it and destroy it. Cassandra was Rapunzel's handmaiden and best friend, as well as Mother Gothels biological daughter. Cass got angry because Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel and abandoned Cass, so Cass stole the moondrop to "take back" the destiny that Rapunzel stole from her. It all culminates in an ancient evil entity stealing both of the powers and destroying the kingdom.
    Edit: I appreciate that folks understand the nuance of the characters, but in a "very brief summary", concision without spoilers is the priority over nuance. Let folks watch the show and make their own decisions about characters and their actions. 💜

      @@HeraldofMisfortune yeah I specifically think that Cass broke in the episode where SPOILER ALERT Raps stole the spotlight in a battle competition and ended up having to fight against Cass and WON because of a stupid law. Everything went downhill from there with Raps having constant pressure over herself and acting as she's this god-sent saviour for everyone and didn't needed Cass to be with her, also the rest of the characters aren't that supportive of Cass either so it makes total sense at the end of season 2 when Cass decides that enough is enough. I loved her arc and the series in general.
      But the Mother Gothel thing, that's personal for her, like Raps had nothing to do with it, she didn't asked to be born with magical powers in her hair and being kidnapped 18 years by a sociopath witch. Just saying.

      @@Isarai1705 Had things gone differently in season one and the writers didn't feel the need to throw Varian under the bus for the sake of the plot and he was allowed to go on the journey in season 2, I think Varian would have been the one character that would have been in Cassandra's corner when she was feeling unheard. I think he would have struck a good balance between being there for both Rapunzel and Cassandra without making the other feel like he was taking sides. There was so much potential for him in season 2.

    I love Jeremey Jordan too. His character Varian is the whole reason I started watching the show in the first place. I binged the 1st season during the pause between the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2, then watched it episode by episode from there.
    It's great that u enjoyed these songs, and there are plenty more.
    But the crowning song of this series, however, is 'Ready As I'll Ever Be' (season 1 final). It's sung by Jeremy, Eden, and a bunch of other characters. Since u don't know anything about the plot, u should at least understand that Varian actually used to be a villain, that's why in 'Nothing Left To Lose' he's talking to her like he knows exactly what she must be going through. And the song 'Ready As I'll Ever Be' takes place during that period when he was the villain.
    Also; I know Cass looks cool with her powers, suit, and sword, and Eden is an amazing singer. But her character Cass...in my personal option...is not my favorite. Varian is my favorite💖💖💖
    Let's just say that when Varian turned dark side, it was actually for a very understandable reason (I sympathized with him and was actually rooting for him. Loved him as the good guy and the bad guy). Cass on the other hand, even when she was good, she was pretty nasty, and then she turned dark side for a pretty ridiculous reason.
    If you're that curious and really enjoy the music, I'd encourage u to watch the show all the why through. Maybe even react to the rest of the episodes (there aren't songs in every episode but there are quite a few).
    And the 1st episode u watched 'What the Hair?!' is technically not the beginning. To officially begin the series, u must first watch the tv movie 'Tangled: Before Ever After.' That shows how Rapunzel got her hair back, about the black rocks, etc. Don't feel bad, I did the same thing.

    For context: the premise of the show is that there is a counterpart to the sundrop that gave Rapunzel her hair. The counterpart is the moonstone. In the first song, Rapunzel’s hair is short because she hasn’t discovered the moonstone’s rocks that it creates. The rocks (and the moonstone in general) are seeking Rapunzel out because she is the sundrop. When she touches a rock, it causes her hair to return only this time she absorbed some of the moonstone’s protective power and so it can’t be cut. Basically the show’s premise her trying to learn the secrets of the sundrop and the moonstone and how it ties into her overall destiny

    She doesn't want to kill Rapunzel, infact she's terrified of hurting her but the REAL bad guy "Zhan Tiri" manipulated Cass into thinking Rapunzel is in her way of Cassandra's Destiny so she wants to take it from Rapunzel

    • @FatimaMohammed-ns6bd
      @FatimaMohammed-ns6bd 3 года назад +58

      Just because Cass was manipulated, doesn't mean she is not responsible for her actions.
      All Zhan Tiri did was lie to Cass, she didnt brainwash her or mind control her, Zhan tiri would just say something and Cass would believe/ do it. Fans need to stop making excuses for Cass, yeah I like her, but I wouldn't make ridiculous reasons to blame other people for someone's mistakes. Cass screwed up, but thats not all Zhan Tiri's fault.

    • @delivermypain
      @delivermypain 2 года назад +47

      @@FatimaMohammed-ns6bd As is Rapunzel. Fans are adamant to pick a side in this, but they are both wrong. That's kinda the point of the entire show.
      Zhan Tiri 100% manipulated Cassandra by targeting her where she was vulnerable. If it happened to you, you'd know just how easy it is to fall into that trap, especially if you receive visual evidence, like Zhan Tiri did. And whenever Cassandra's resolve would falther, Zhan Tiri went and manipulated even more visual evidence. Seeing is believing. I sincerely doubt you'd have done "the right thing" if you had been in her shoes. No, you'd have been angry and hurt. So, thanks to that, Cassandra strayed from herself and was overcome by her hurt and anger resulting into bad actions which she couldn't forgive herself for, even when Rapunzel did.
      And Rapunzel is JUST as bad. She's floating in this bubble of naiveté and joy that makes her extremely selfish. Other people absolutely need to be happy or she'll make them happy-- contrary to what kid shows may make you believe, that's not a good trait to have. It lacks empathy and sympathy. Sometimes you need to allow people to be hurt, and Rapunzel didn't allow Cassandra to be hurt or angry at all. Never once did she stop to actually listen to what was going on. All she did was trying to tell Cassandra to wait and listen to her cause she was right and Cassandra was wrong.
      All the characters are inherently flawed. That's the point.

    • @FatimaMohammed-ns6bd
      @FatimaMohammed-ns6bd 2 года назад +13

      @@delivermypain I agree, Rapunzel was the reason Varian became a villain. Varian came to ask Rapunzel for help 4 times (I think) to save his father, the only family he had left, and Rapunzel did nothing to help until season 3. Rapunzel was an awful friend to Varian, I would understand why Cassandra would become a villain, kinda. Although I wish Cass could be more honest with Rapunzel, and tell her about her flaws.

    • @delivermypain
      @delivermypain 2 года назад +13

      @@FatimaMohammed-ns6bdI don't think there's a single person in the world that has an easy time admitting to their flaws or figuring them out in the first place. We're taught to focus on our strengths after all. Even those with a low self-esteem will mention flaws that aren't actually flaws or are flaws they do not truly possess.
      People on a job interview are often asked if there's something they're bad at, to test how your self-evaluation is. Most people will sort of mention a mediocre flaw they might have and then immediately put a good trait forward.
      Just like it's difficult to open up about flaws, it's not easy for everyone to admit they're hurting. Hurting in many cultures nowadays is somehow considered synonymous with weakness and, as I said (I sound like a broken record), weaknesses/flaws are hard to admit to.
      So yeah, I agree, it'd be nice if Cass opened up more, but I think it's good that they didn't let her do that because it isn't a realistic part of her character development. In this manner, the characters are more human in my opinion. :)

    Also, she does not want to kill Rapunzel. This ancient demon warlock named Zhan Tiri got into Cassandra's mind and made her think that Rapunzel was taking everything she had ever wanted. Cass's biological mother is actually Mother Gothel, and she was especially upset that her mom chose Raps over her. She kind of just turned on Rapunzel in a jealous rage. She tried to take over her kingdom, and almost did until Cassandra realized that Zhan Tiri twisted her mind and made her think Raps was trying to overtake her, and she became good again and helped Rps fight zhan Tiri off. In the end, she actually dies, but Raps revives her. Cass leaves the kingdom to go follow her own destiny. Okay, I hope that helped!

    Omg PLEASE do a deep dive!!! I’d love to see your reactions to the whole show. If you decide to watch, make sure you watch the pilot first- it’s separate from the rest of the series and it’s called Rapunzel’s Before Ever After. After that, there is a 3 season long show called Tangled the Series. Since you asked, here is the premise: Rapunzel, while secretly adventuring outside the castle, encounters some mysterious black rocks. When she touches them all her hair grows back. The first song you listened to takes place right before she finds the rocks, which is why her hair is still short there. The context for Nothing Left to Lose is that in season 3, Cassandra betrays Rapunzel and eventually kidnaps Varian because A) he had information she needed and B) as bait to get rapunzel to show up. Let Me Make You Proud takes place way back in season 1 when Varian is traveling to the castle to get help from Rapunzel after something happens to his dad. I hope this explanation helps!! I tried to leave out whatever spoilers weren’t covered in those three songs so that way if you decide to watch the whole show, you don’t already know every single little detail about the plot.

    The first song you listened to takes place after the movie, before she got her hair back. Later after that song, she found the magical black rocks and they made her hair grow back indestructible. Later in the show Rapunzle meets Varian and he tries to help her find a way to cut her hair and then later she turns her back on him to save the kingdom but he needed her help to save his father. In “let me make you proud”, Varian is singing about how he’ll make his dad proud by saving him and he becomes a villain for a while. Later him and Rapunzle make up and Cassandra finds out that her own mother chose Rapunzle over her when she was little girl. This reveal in the show is a big turning point as it is Cassandra’s last straw because she’s always felt like she lived in Rapunzle’s shadow. Cassandra becomes a villain using the moon stone which gives her the powers to control the black rocks while she’s also being manipulated and lied to by a demon who she thinks is trying to help her take down Rapunzle. They make up in the end though. (We also find out that Eugene is the lost prince of the Dark Kingdom)

    Something I love about the animation in Nothing Left to Lose is that in the first verse when Varian is singing, Cassandra is being surrounded by more and more reflections of him, showing that at least in that moment she is listening, there is increasing power behind his message. He has a chance to get through to her. Hence her momentary hesitation when faced with multiple reflections of her new self. However, then he calls her a villain, and suddenly that gives her an out. She can accuse him of being against her, and that gives her an excuse to stop listening and shout him down.

    (HIGHLY recommend Varian's villian song as an opportunity to see the range for several characters including Varian himself. It's super fun)
    1) this was a lot of fun to watch. I'm not a singer or anything, I just really enjoy hearing vocal coaches talk about popular musical numbers in shows and movies that aren't like smash hit blockbusters (ya know, TV show grade stuff, the stuff that doesn't always make it to theaters but yet still have a lot of heart and work put in)
    2) why does everyone always assume stuff for kids has to automatically cheap or second rate? Kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for and they are stronger than they look. Kids feel the harsher feelings and understand the harsher themes just as much as adults do. Likewise, kids recognize quality when it's there. There's a reason why cheaper animated TV shows are often more of a hit with adults than they are with children. Adults like quick cheap jokes, children are looking for imagination and creativity that brings their ideas to life. And with Disney, its expected to assume they'd put their best foot forward when it comes to their music. Even in their old 90s cartoons like Aladdin or The Little Mermaid or Timon and Pumba, they wrote some honestly memorable songs that even I can hum to to this day. The animation studio might not have had the budget for as sparkly a series as the Rapunzel one, but they budgeted their funds well when it came to stories and music. :)

  • @mikieliza
    @mikieliza 3 года назад +2

    Two spoiler alerts, one just to explain premise and one going more in depth (if you never plan on watching the show)! Since Hannah asked and I'm obsessed with this show right now lol.
    Okay, lesser spoiler alert (just to explain what's going on in these songs, and general premise of the show):
    The show in its entirety takes place between the end of Tangled the film, and before the short film Tangled Ever After where Eugene and Rapunzel get married. Rapunzel doesn't have her long hair at the start of the series because Eugene cut it at the end of Tangled, but she gets it back by touching some of those black magic rocks in the first episode of the series-- she isn't sure why it happened, and that's part of the mystery that unfolds. Cassandra (girl with black hair that turns electric blue) is Rapunzel's handmaiden in Corona and is one of her closest friends. Varian is a 14 yr old boy that lives in Corona and is an alchemist. Because of some tragic events, his dad (who never really supported his dangerous alchemy) ends up getting encapsulated in amber, and Varian is going to Corona to ask for Rapunzel's help and try to save him and his village (Let Me Make You Proud). However after Rapunzel is unable to help him due to bad circumstances, Varian becomes angry and vengeful and has a stint as a villain. This happens earlier in the series, which is why later in Nothing Left to Lose he's telling Cass that being a villain isn't the path she should go down since he has since "seen the light" and come back to the good side.
    Cassandra on the other hand has a really long, drawn out, complex story and why she became a villain is a huge spoiler but, in a lesser-spoiler nutshell, she felt like she was constantly getting the short end of the stick and had to be a villain to get what she wanted. Her feelings are complex and she doesn't want to kill Rapunzel or Varian, but she sometimes feels like she has to step on them to achieve her goals.
    Now the deeper spoilers:
    Cass has blue hair because she possesses the "opposite" power as Rapunzel at this point. Rapunzel has sunshine/healing hair magic because of the sun flower that her mom drank while pregnant with her, while the opposite energy surrounding death, decay, and darkness is harbored in the moonstone which Cass has on her chest. It allows her to control the magic black rocks and be an electric blue supervillain. Rapunzel never gives up on Cass though, and it turns out that to defeat the bigger badder evil in the series, they have to team up their sun and moon powers and reconcile. So Cass does not want to kill Rapunzel and eventually comes back to the good side, yay!
    A mega spoiler that you should not read unless you plan on never watching the show:
    Cass feels resentment because Rapunzel always seems to get the better treatment and Cass gets the shorter end of the stick. One big thing that made her feel this way is that she found out that she's actually Mother Gothel's daughter, and she was abandoned for Rapunzel because Gothel is narcissistic and wanted her magic hair. So knowing that even her own mother wanted Rapunzel over her was the icing on the cake and finally drove her to take the moonstone and become a villain.

    “I didn’t expect to see a supervillain in this show” - I promise you, if you watch it, the buildup is SO perfect and rewarding. The shock factor is fantastic (obviously lost on you now, but would still be cool to watch the buildup.) - It just makes a LOT of sense in context.

    So the first song you did was from the special "Tangled: Before Ever After," which is making a reference to the fact that this is before the Disney short where Rapunzel and Eugene get married. The special and the first season are all about Rapunzel wanting freedom outside of her kingdom, to not be the cooped up, sheltered child she's been all of her life. She gets her magical hair back after that first song you listened to. She and Cass go back to where the Sundrop flower once was, which now has black pointy rocks in its place. Rapunzel touches the rocks, reawakening the magic in her body and making her hair grow back. That's how the first season begins. The third song you listened to is from the special half way through season one called "Tangled: Queen For a Day," where Rapunzel's parents decide to take a vacation and leave her in charge of the kingdom while they're away. Meanwhile, trouble goes down at home, making Varian rush to Rapunzel for aide only to be turned away due to bigger issues, which starts his villain arc. Season two, Rapunzel travels outside the walls of Corona to explore the world with her friends in search for her destiny. It's season three where the second song you listened to comes in. Varian is over his villain arc at that point and the gang had come back to Corona to clean up the mess he made while they were away. Of course, by the beginning of season three, Cass had begun her villain arc but I'd hate to ruin how or why because it's a shock to anyone who watches it. (Even me who, honestly, wouldn't have been surprised if the why had been addressed earlier.) There's so much more to the series that's both heartfelt and heartbreaking but I think you should watch it. It may be a show for children, but it's so entertaining and I love it so much. It'll be worth it to watch it from the beginning yourself. Trust me.

    A lot of Disney shows are really more for all ages than just kids. Without too many spoilers, Rapunzel is the embodiment of the Sun Drop, which is what gave the flower it's power before it was transferred to her. There's an opposite power called the Moonstone, and it's what draws the Sun Drop power back out of Rapunzel and gives her back her hair. There's also an ancient evil that is first introduced in the same episode that Make You Proud is from, which becomes an over arching force that they have to deal with in the later seasons.
    Jeremy Jordan's character, Varien, is a young alchemist who's experiments tend to go a bit arry, as he's still learning his craft. He's been looking into the black rocks that have been popping up in the village, which are tied to the Moonstone, and accidentally traps his father in amber as a result.
    Eden Espinosa's character was adopted by the captain of the guards, and I can't really say too much about why she turns evil cause it's a pretty big spoiler to her story, but she's basically upset because she finds out her life would be very different if it weren't for Rapunzel. There's a heck of a lot more to it than that, but I really can't say much without giving some major spoilers.
