      McLeod is 24 yrs old, had 30 pts last season, was great on PK and was a +10. By no means a top tier talent, but a perfectly respectable 3rd liner. His best years are still likely to come ages ~25-30. It's not like they traded a good prospect for some 33 yr old duster.
      While Savoie is a good prospect, he is unproven. Sometimes a decent bird in hand is better than a POTENTIALLY juicy bird in the bush. I like this trade for EDM though seems a fair enough trade to me tbh

  • @LateCloser
    @LateCloser 3 дня назад +29

    No one knows or even has a clue as to who will "win" this trade. You can slant it however, you feel. As a Sabres fan, I was looking forward to see what Savoie might do with his opportunity this year. Although, it should be pointed out that last year Zach Benson took a spot on the team as a 18 year old drafted one year AFTER Savoie with a lower draft pick. They even played on the same junior team. Benson is basically a year and a half younger.
    That doesn't mean Savoie won't be a NHL player or even a good one. It's just interesting that he got sent back to juniors, while his younger teammate made the team and played all year for the Sabres. I was disappointed he couldn't beat Benson for the spot last year. Some players take longer though. Edmonton should be a fantastic spot for him, as there is no rush or huge need for offense at the moment. Good luck Matt.
    I guess the Sabres are planning on using Mcleod as a third line center, which means Peyton Krebs is likely no longer in the plans. Sam Lafferty I assume is going to be the #4 center. I don't see a spot for Krebs anymore.

      Savoie was hurt (Shoulder injury/surgery) so that is why he hasn't been on the roster. Kinda hard to make the team in rehab- but to that point - can he survive in the NHL? Mcleod is NOT a physical player, at all, but he is a lot bigger than Savoie and he can take a hit.

    All the criticism of Buffalo on this trade comes from fans who don’t seem to consider the fact that the Buffalo organization has seen a hell of a lot more of Savoie than any fan has and have decided that he’s not such-a-much. The Islanders ended up getting Matt Barzal out of it. Not saying it's exactly the same with Savoie. He probably turns out at least to be a regular NHL player, if not a star. But he was picked at #9, not #3, and while star players have been picked around that spot, usually you get 2nd & 3rd liners, which is what McLeod is. Reinhart, if I remember correctly was picked at #4, so was a monumental bust, but not for the team that picked him. Savoie is a good prospect - not their best - but there are also size and injury concerns with him. He showed pretty well in a short AHL stint, but the reason he was still around early last season was due to an injury suffered early in the prospect tournament (not his first injury). As for the trades Adams has made recently - Byram, Malenstyn, McLeod - all are younger players without an NMC. This is obviously a sign that the team is having difficulty landing players that have some say in where they can go. Quite evidently and predictably, a lot of Sabres "fans" are dissing the trade of Savoie to Edmonton for (primarily) McLeod. Apparently these same "fans" of the Sabres seem to forget that there are a ton of good to very good NHL players (you know, the ones these "fans" want Buffalo to always get, especially for some Sabres player or players these same "fans" think are terrible and in need of peddling) who wouldn't accept a trade to Buffalo even if it meant the Brinks truck would be making regularly scheduled huge deliveries to their bank of choice. The term "No Trade Clause" seems to be lost on these "fans" since Buffalo isn't exactly a destination of choice for more much worthier players hoping to be signed by a team with Stanley Cup trophy aspirations vs. one that hasn't been to the playoffs in 13 seasons and hoping that number doesn't become 14 by the time April 2025 rolls around. It's pretty comical to see what these "fans" write if only because they show their ignorance for the very game, and team, they profess to be fans of.

    I mentioned on oilers end of season recap video that Shannon did, that the oilers were in the best spot they've been in during mcdavid era with Jeff Jackson taking the helm of the team. Anyone who's paid close attention to his front office moves and what he's said in interviews should have told you they were going to be a much more progressive and aggressive front office.
    Even when he decides to hire a GM, it is still his team. It's clear he doesn't want to be the public face of Oilers front office. It seems like he's not a fan of all the media aspects of the job. He's also not currently located in Edmonton, and the GM is going to need to live in Edmonton full time. Regardless of who's hired, the majority of decisions will need to go through Jeff Jackson.

That said, I have to wonder, how do you pull off all these trades in a fucking day or 2? It's mind boggling. A couple thoughts I have on this trade: 1) Matt Savoie is definitely trending downwards after a really underwhelming World Juniors and a disappointing performance with Moose Jaw in the WHL playoffs and Mem Cup, PLUS the Sabres have Zach Benson who is a better version of Savoie. So I don’t think it’s a massive loss for Buffalo. 2) HOWEVER, I still believe this was a bad trade by Kevyn Adams due to the fact Savoie was a top ten draft pick and is quite highly regarded in many circles with the dynamic skillset and name recognition he carries. Honestly, I was pretty sure Savoie would eventually be the odd man out among Sabres prospects, but I don’t think there’s any question he could have received a lot more than what he eventually got back for him. Strange trade, no doubt.

    The "cap-space" gets a bit burried in this analysis (of the McLeod-savoie deal):
    The fact of the matter is: someone had to make room!
    Oilers still haven't signed their RFAs, namely Holloway and Broberg (and Lavoie, but that does not seem of any concern);
    Meanwhile, they are *over the cap,* and even if Kane should go on LTIR to start the season (as is being rumored!), the soace to sign these two is probably too thin.
    Also: McLeid would be a 2.1m AAV 4th liner for them. He was the most natural choice to be on his way out.
    Even now, they are still over the cao.
    My guess is: they are not done dealing!
    Best choice would now be Ceci.
    Broberg seems to be a good fit to stabilize Nurse, and Cody would thus be a 3.25 AAV 3rd pairing guy.
    Too rich!
    And they just signed two righties during free agency: Stecher (who was on their team since the trade deadline, but mostly out due to injury) & Joshua Brown!
    Fun fact:
    The oilers now have two Skinners (not related), two browns (neither), and the second Savoie; his brother, whom they drafted, wasn't given a QO though... Maybe they don't like having brothers?
    It was rumored, that McLeods brother, Michael, was discussed as a 4th line option in the past, but they never pursued him. And he is a UFA atm.
    ... but they did have Matt McLeod on the Condors, in the past, for 3 meager games....

    Gonna be hilarious if Buffalo has to pay a ridiculous salary for Malenstyn after trading a 2nd for him only to lose him next year

    Interesting fact. The Oilers didn't qualify his older brother, Carter Savoie just this past Monday.

    As a completely impartial fan the trade is a little odd but the Sabres dont really need more super skilled prospects at this point, they gotta get the right proven depth pieces around their stars. McLeod could be a suprise in Buffalo, i really started noticing him 2 years ago in the WCFs

      Finally, someone with a brain in his head. The Sabres needed to develop/bolster their bottom 6 forward group. They should have all the skilled top 6 forwards they need for several years with what's already on the team and what's in the pipeline as long as they all continue to develop.

    McLeod got almost all of his points on the wing with Draisaitl centering him, there's a 0% chance his points go up. This is a terrible trade for Buffalo

    McLeod trade was more of a salary dump but Savoie could be a better player down the road.

    McLeod is lightning fast. Big man. Less than average hands and was given opportunities to play up the roster and didn't run with it.
    As an aside... he did file for arbitration last year and rumor was the team wasn't pleased with him and his agent about that.
    He frees up 3.1 per year and the Oilers were already 2.4 over, so money wise it's a aash overall for Edmonton.
    Buffalo gets a speedy player that is NHL ready and can help them right now.

    I feel like a prospect like Savoie should get more than a low prospect and a third liner. That doesn’t mean it is win for Edmonton as if this guy doesn’t pan out well then it’s bad deal. But the Oilers are also getting rid of 2.1M to re-sign hopefully Drai and Bouch
