    Crosby should be worth max cap, Malkin shoulda been worth close to max cap, they took 8.7 and 7.1 to get cups home and the team used that space to get a team

    Strudwick, being from Edmonton, playing for the Oilers should know all about what made the 80s Oilers team great, and, conversely, what brought on the decade of darkness for that Oilers team. The hard salary cap means a hard choice; everyone gives a little for the overall good of the team, or you have virtually zero chance of ever winning the Stanley Cup. Jason was never a star player and thus not a big salary player. Still, the money he earned playing hockey far exceeded what even the most skilled tradesmen and oil/pipeline workers make in Alberta for their entire careers. We all know any pro athlete's career is much shorter than the length of a tradesman's or accountants career. But even an average NHLer like Struddy far out-earns what almost all other careers earn for their practitioners who work three times as long to earn anywhere from a little to a lot LESS money. If you earn $3 million after taxes in your first six years playing in the NHL (I suspect thus is below league average but let's call it a reasonable estimation) and you invest half this money prudently (anyone who can't live well off a half million dollars a year when they're in their early to mid-twenties has a serious problem and needs counseling) that individual should be set up for their retirement. They will still need to work to support themselves through their adult life to around the age of sixty or so, but that's like almost everyone else alive. Now, if you hang around the league another half a dozen years, you'll have another $1.5 million to add to your investment portfolio. That would likely allow you to retire from work by age 55. That's far better than 95% of the rest of society. By that time you're around 37 and gave to work less than 20 more years. The thing is, in today's NHL, if your career lasts 12 years or longer, you've likely averaged better than $900,000 per year, otherwise you'll likely have had a much shorter NHL career abd will have to work until retirement age like the rest of us. The point of all this is to show that those star players who are unwilling to take that "hometown discount" are far more interested in personal monetary greed than they are interested in winning a championship for their team, teammates, themselves, and most especially for their long suffering fans who, by buying tickets, over-priced drinks and food, and overpriced team merchandise, enable the players' lavish lifestyles and line the team owners' pockets. To the Oilers' credit, most of their players are willing to take a haircut on their maximum available earning potential to stay with the team in hopes of winning the Stanley Cup. NHL hockey, above all, is a business, which often makes its dealings and machinations very mercenary in nature. Witness Wayne Gretzky et al, Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Cujo, and countless others through the years. Frankly, it's just the Oilers luck to finally find an owner with deep pockets and who grew up an eternal Oilers fan, that the NHL decided to bring in a hard salary cap. The Oilers finally have an almost endless pile of cash and now they're forced into a salary cap situation. But this is the world we're in and no team wins without most or all of their players making some personal financial sacrifice. One thing, it makes the off-season far more interesting.

    To suggest that Savoie would be expected on the opening night roster for Buffalo shows a tremendous amount of Torontonian ignorance. The guy is not (yet) a center at the NHL level from what he’s shown, and they clearly value McLeod enough to see him as a good fit on the 3rd line for them. When you look at the pipeline for Buffalo, you have your true centers in Ostlund, Wahlberg, and now Helenius. That’s it. On the wings you have Kulich, Benson, Rosen, formerly Savoie, a couple Russians, and then guys that are still super young like Quinn and Peterka who ideally play another 8 years here. They simply traded a guy at a position of strength who is valuable enough to gain a piece that helps the roster, who is still not NHL ready quite yet. It’s an overpay in a vacuum but if the Sabres play even a single playoff game next year nobody in Buffalo will really care. I think they see a lot of Jeff Skinner in Savoie where they’re not exactly believers in small, not strong guys who rely on agility over speed. With skilled linemates that speed from McLeod is going to play dividends, and Lindy has always emphasized a tough, speedy 3rd line that can still score.

      @brianpesci 4 дня назад +1

      Plus, Savoie was what we have been kinda bitching about for the past 4 drafts, "another small forward", that seem to be suddenly less attractive to GMKA, Lots of other centers in the pipeline, even though I never thought he would be a center in the NHL. I'm okay with it, both teams seem like they feel they improved, time is the proof.

    • @brendanf8845
      @brendanf8845 2 дня назад

      I think this signifies a big shift in who they truly value most in the prospect pool. They want to see success against players who are bigger and stronger than you, because that’s what these prospects are going to bump into in the NHL. I’d be willing to bet they’d started to like even Rosen more than Savoie with what he’s shown against men in the AHL and how complete his game has become

    Oilers need to sign Drai and Bouchard after next season...this season is their ONE chance. People can pretend it's not true but it is, even if they both sign that is probably 13+ and 9+ on a team with no cap to begin with.

    The 2 guys on the right would never win anything as a GM because they would pay their star players max contracts. Look at Tom Brady, took less money than he deserved and won 7 rings. The difference between making $70 million and $60 million is insignificant when you get that high in salary. You could take the max contract and never win a cup or take less and win cups.

    I truly don’t get it for Buffalo. Cut Skinner but literally don’t even attempt to get better? They are thin on the blue line but yeah let’s trade one of our best prospects for McLeod. They need a true blue line or Goalie!! They could have gotten McLeod for at worst a 2nd round pick. Screams of the Oakland A’s organization right now.

    • @atticustkam
      @atticustkam 3 дня назад +1

      We had no spot for Skinner after Peterka pushed him out of the top 6 - horrible salary and a turnovers machine. Savoie is only the 3rd or 4th best Sabres prospect (after Benson, Kulich, Hellenius) plus he's small and not NHL ready. Time will tell who wins this trade, maybe good for both teams? How can you say Sabres need defense with 4 young 1st round draft choices in the group plus Samuelsson who was the first pick in 2nd round?

    Savoie is a 5'9 forward who WON'T play in the NHL this year.
    Buffalo needs to make a push for the playoffs.
    Call it confusing if you want, but he wasn't going to be a better option than either Thompson or Cozens. Not for another 2 seasons, minimum.
    And if you're going from a 5'11 center to a 5'9 center on your third line (your "physical" line) that's not a great option either.
    Savoie WOULD be an upgrade over Lafferty, but they're invested in him. And he has a defensive side to his game.
    If Edmonton wants a guy for 2-3 years from now, Savoie would be great.
    But scoring goals isn't something the Oilers struggled with 🤷
    Personally, and this comes from someone who has seen Savoie play dozens of games, I think this is ACTUALLY a better trade for the Sabres.

    • @hardcaliber19
      @hardcaliber19 2 дня назад

      Except... that's exactly what the oilers wanted. To restock their prospect shelf by trading out a redundant 4th liner that makes 2.1mil. Trades like this, trading your 1st round prospects for soft-as-baby-crap guys like McLeod, is why buffalo will continue to be a bottom feeder.
