Using Couture Techniques to Sew an Edwardian Inspired Dress | Making a 1901 Evening Gown Pt 1

- This project allowed me to practice using all of the couture techniques I learned in school! We've finally reached the actual making of the dress for my Foundation's Revealed contest entry, in which I will be sewing an Edwardian (late victorian?) inspired gown.. I go into quite a few ways you can add a more couture finish to your garment making so I hope this is helpful to you! This is part 1 of the dress making and covers the construction, where as part two will cover the embellishments.
In this video I cover how to add flipper bones to a gown and what they're used for, how to make lingerie straps, how to add boning to a dress in a way that won't be visible from the outside, fitting a mockup and a final dress fitting, how to flat line a dress using a popcorn tin, hand overcast seam finish, and couture finished closures using metal hooks and hand-worked thread loops covered by a ribbon for that super clean look! I also include some tips for how to fit a muslin mock up on yourself so you can make your life easier and get a more precise fit.

This dress is giving major confessor vibes!
idk what that is, but i'd love to check it out!
Ok but the popcorn bucket thing blew my mind. I've never even flat lined anything and it still changed my life lol. Great video!
Thank you so much! And omg same, when I first started in costuming I was so confused by the stack of popcorn buckets in the corner of all the studios I visited. I'm glad I can help bypass some of the confusion for everyone else! 😊
That’s so cool! The flipper bons(sp?) flaps are such a nice detail, all the hidden stuff we don’t see 💪
flipper bones! they were such a revelation when I found out about them like literally changed my life lol, they're so convenient for keeping everything from shifting around so no constant tugging at your clothes!
My mind is blown. I don’t have this problem yet I want to add flipper bones to all my clothes!
@@sarahrosen4985 it's also really useful if you have tops that gape too much around the neckline! you can tuck the flipper bones into your bra and no more peekaboobs lol
Gorgeous, what a lovely silhouette, and I love the little details like the flipper bones and the litte clips under the straps.
thank you! I'm glad you appreciate them!! 😊
That is an amazing fit on the bodice. Thanks for all of the costuming tricks.

haha thank you! I'm so glad I can share some useful tips! 😊❤
I love putting on your videos while I'm sewing! Or watching them when I'm procrastinating sewing. Corset question - obviously it's an important foundation garment! Do you find it comfortable? How tightly are you lacing? It gives such incredible structure!
Thank you that's so nice to hear! The corset for this video is pretty comfortable and isn't so much reducing anything as much as it's pushing everything into different places - my measurements stayed pretty much the same on the horizontal, but it elongated the distance between my bust and waist and smoothed the curve from waist to hip. The corset I made for Alice I accidentally made a bit too small and is definitely not comfortable!
@@moth.faerie That's so helpful! Thank you
So many great tips! Love the shaping of the dress, gorgeous!
thank you for watching, I'm glad you liked it!
This is pretty cool! New sub from SAI ❤️ Thank you for sharing. ★
Thank you so much! And nice to meet you! 😊
OMG it looks so pretty already!!!! I love the progress!
Thank you so much! ❤
Great video!
You had to go to grad school for those tricks?! And here you are giving them away for free?! :o
I have a masters in costume production! and yes I firmly believe everyone should know all the secrets of sewing! that said, I don't have a lesson plan for this so anyone who wants to go into costuming specifically will get a much more thorough and efficient education by going to school rather than learning from me
What book were you mentioning? I didn't quite catch it.
in which part?
@@moth.faerie the inspiration for the outfit. It sounds interesting and I want to read it.
@@kathleenwhalen1450 the standard work on cutting ladies tailor made garments? i think that's the only book i mentioned
@@kathleenwhalen1450 oh! it's the cruel prince by holly black! it's a great book you should definitely read it!
