What could be better than listening to ancient music than to hear it played by expert musicians in such gorgeous settings? Whether you're in a garden pavilion or a well-appointed timber frame room, you're hearing the sounds the way people hundreds of years ago would've heard it. And btw, I didn't know Suzhou had such grand architecture! I've seen videos showing the quaint houses lining canals, but no one shows these beautiful opera houses and museums. Thanks for sharing, and thanks to your tour guide as well!

Living in 8 countries, effectively across 4 continents (Europe, North Africa, Middle East, now China), I've never felt unsafe walking alone. China is no better than any of those other countries. The two times I've been unsafe were travelling in South America, once in broad daylight, and once at night in the supposedly safe, 'tourist' part of a city.

It's true, in China getting lost at 3 am walking at night is not a safety concern. Worst I had was one beggar at 6 AM (while I as walking with my mixed baby daughter in a stroller) accosted us for some money.,. A local, without me asking, beat the beggar with an umbrella. I felt so bad. The beggar left quickly and so did the other man with his now very crooked umbrella.

多年前去过苏州，在报恩寺塔（不是南京那座）的院子里的一座建筑里，有一尊白色的玉观音像，当时看到呆住了，因为实在太精美太像观音菩萨就在你面前了，旁边的叔叔阿姨看到直笑，说多拜拜，我就拜拜，后来还去流通处请了几部佛经，阿姨还送了我一个居士包装，说来惭愧那个包至今也没用过有点浪费了，经论倒是看了不少，之前还去参观了博物馆，贝聿铭大师设计的，确实不同凡响，好像还有个什么工艺博物馆，虽然大部分都是仿制的，但还是把我这个文风不振的小地方来的土包子给震撼了一把，非常有文化的地方，近年一些关于日本风情街保安不让汉服游览者进入等新闻确实很败好感，但我相信这些都是历史发展中的小杂音，苏州还是一个人文风情浓厚的值得一去的地方
