My biggest complaint about the "GameStop Retro" initiative would have to be its employees. They lack video game knowledge. Most of them can't even read a GBA cartridge.
Yup, exactly this! I went in there and spoke to a couple employees about retro and it turns out they’re not even trained in how to spot fake reproduction cartridges. Get outta here with that. Be careful shopping there.
It's so interesting how fast time flies and you don't even realize it as it's happening. Like, I know it goes without saying, but never in my entire life did I think gamestop or any brick and mortar stores like blockbuster would be squeezed out so quickly out by digital alternatives. I always thought they'd coexist, even if digital was more popular. But that's obviously foolish in hindsight lol. Great video as usual man
I don't blame you for feeling that way as I didn't give it much thought before either. I used to think that people were exaggerating when they talked about how physical media is dying and affecting many stores like these. But it is happening more and more. Thanks for the support!
@@franciscoferreiravlogs Yeah its pretty nuts hahaha. It's still cool to be able to go in at all and see retro games though so that aspect is nice. No stress!
One interesting bit of info I learned from a friend of mine who works at GameStop. For the retro game selection, the games must be the North American version as indicated by the ESRB rating. If a game doesn't have a rating (pre-1994) than it must to be the North American version. So this means no imports, and as someone who mainly collects Japanese games I have little reason to even visit GameStop unless I am specifically looking for games within my country.
I was able to jump on the retro train before it really took off, I grabbed a few games around the summer and it was still somewhat affordable, some games were WAAAAAAY below market value and now they're about market value which is discouraging to say the least.
The differences in price between stores is not an actual difference once they scan it. Price changes come out all the time and sometimes employees just don’t get around to restickering everything especially DS games in the glass cases because it’s a huge pain lol source: I worked there for nearly a decade. Great videos btw!
Thank you for correcting that! I suppose that customers should ask if that is the updated price of the game before getting ready to purchase it. Thanks for the support, as well!
The worst part is than not all gamestops are retro stores in my area and instead tries to ship retro games from trade ins to retro stores and it all just stupid
Yeah, the one “Retro” store near me is a joke. While I saw RUclipsrs picking up DS, Gamecube, Xbox, etc. (in original cases, no less),”Retro”, at least in the context of the store near me was basically PS3,360, Wii U and Wii games - no ha held stuff, not even handheld games. The biggest threat to GameStop’s existence is basically their garbage business tactics, not the physical game market itself. If that were the case, all the Mom & Pop game stores around the country would be in deep trouble.
once a turning point happens retro will drop in price cause nobody except rich people will be able to afford it, or addicts that "think they need these games" despite emulation existing for free. Majority of these people buying retro games dont even play them, they just post youtube video and social media pictures for clout, or they do trade scams for store credit to get retro games to resale elsewhere. Now a days in the retro community it seems its everything other than actually playing the games that the hobby is about.
@@user-to1su2iy4d it always makes people butthurt when you tell them it doesnt impress you that they have thousands of dollars in video games, and instead see it as a mental illness not a "collection or hobby"
I bought Mario kart DS and it came with the case he gave me a generic case that said Mario kart DS on it and said the case was a display model lmao I'll never go back
I remember back when gamestop came out and ran all the competition out of town only to later become a much worse store than all the actual good game stores that they put out of business. To heck with them, hope they fail tbh
Does anyone know if GameStop Retro is equipped to sniff out fakes? People who own real retro game stores can tell a Pokemon fake with their eyes closed but the minimum wage making teenager at the mall, not so much.
I just stumbled across your YT channel. Great stuff. Subscribed!

GameStop is under a bigger transition than just a retro store IYKYK
GME TO THE MOON 🚀🤣

Slackers was my all time favorite store over GameStop

bruh, that first gamestop is my gamestop lmao.
same thing happening in Japan major game store became retro store to keep business going.
When they killed Game Informer , I haven't been back since nor will I ever.

The amount of ignorance in one paragraph is exactly what I expect out of RUclips comments

You are right on the money. Their non-existent quality control will kill this initiative for the average consumer.

Meh, they closed down my only local gamestop 🤷♂️
There retro games are alot of the time over priced

Funcoland was great until Greedstop bought them and ruined it.
