    If Mercedes wants $100k for this vehicle, they need to justify their asking price by making it more reliable than a Lexus. This will be a nightmare to own once the warranty expires after 4 years.

      Mateen S here’s what people usually don’t understand about “Lexus reliability”.... Lexus doesn’t ever push the limits in terms of technological advances. They use old tried and true power trains, switch gear, and chassis. They’re behind in pretty much all aspects when it comes to the Germans and now the even the Koreans. Nobody wants to keep a car out of their warranty because the customers who can afford to buy the car brand new in the first place, can just buy the new model year when they’re ready. It’s also an exaggeration to suggest the car is going to fall apart the day after the warranty expires. This car is worth 100K to the right buyer, the buyer who has money and wants the best and most current technology.

      Alex Tran yes, I have seen them. I have a quite positive viewpoint of the new LS, ES, (2020) RX, and LC coupe. They’re pushing their limits in terms of style, because that’s really the only risk they can take as a company. I’m not denying that they’re good cars, I’m simply trying to explain why they’re “reliable”. The LS, ES, RX, and LC are all great vehicles in isolation. When compared to their natural class competition, however, they are underwhelming and they underperform.

    Motoman - you've picked on a few random aspects to criticise. Consensus is that the third row of seats is not practical, so skip that option. The leg room in the rear is generous, except when YOU sit in the back.... The fancy E-active body control also not worth the money. For the rest, this car works well dynamically, and we would like to see you take it off road and tell us about it. Also do some trailer towing. This is a lifestyle utility vehicle, and that's how you should evaluate it.

    A little misleading regarding the price. You get the premium package and the base air suspension for an out the door price of 66k. The premium package gets you the base burmester sound system and good tech. No one needs 21 inch wheels or heated arm rests or so much of the other options he listed. By the way, the base car with the 2 liter 4 cylinder and steel spring suspension on 19" wheels rides really well.

    As a long time Mercedes owner, I have seen the complexity of the electronics increase tangentially! I bought an extended warranty for my S-Class. Thankfully, I didn’t have to pay a dime when the air ride suspension compressor gave out. What did that cost you might ask? $3,900 in Canadian funds. Oh, I almost forgot, one of my adaptive front headlight units needed replacement...cost...$2,800 Canadian. Moral of the story, if you plan to keep these premium vehicles for five years or longer, make sure you have an extended warranty in place. The power train won’t let you down...the electronics will.

    As always, a fantastic review with valuable opinions. Yes, one can easily get astounded by the cost of a fully optioned Mercedes.....but one only has to compare it to a fully optioned domestic product - and there is no comparison. The Mercedes is simply a categorically and stratospherically improved experience. I own the latest flagship Escalade and Mercedes SUV's - and the Mercedes has so far outclassed the Escalade, that you can't even compare them. Yes, the G63 costs about double what the Escalade cost....but this is a "pay to play" sandbox. If the $150k-$200k price range is an issue for you - you are not the right customer for the car - including its eventual maintenance costs. Every time I drive a Domestic vehicle, I don't mind it.....it's just that the Mercedes is a much better place to be and there is no day that I am not excited to drive any of my Mercedes flagships. I could never say that with any of my Ford or GM flagship products. Everybody has their limits though. For example, the Bentley's and the Rolls' are out of my price range. Not that I can't afford them - I just can't "relax" with a half million dollar car sitting in the parking lot while I do groceries......but I have friends who can.......this is a great world!

    Luxury SUVs aren't meant to last longer than 5-6 years. Planned obsolescence. All those fancy suspension bits will fail at 100k miles or less. If Lexus ever updates the GX, that's probably the only mid-size worth considering if you care about longevity.

    Just purchased one a couple weeks ago and traded in our 9-year-old X5. Love the feel and way it drives, handles, the options, room, etc. The "My Mercedes" doesn't always understand things properly (which is so far annoying), and it literally has to "learn" you as a driver. Price wasn't that bad with trade-in, and it was mostly these same options, but a 350. MB has a 4yr/50K warranty and we added another 2/25k to that simply because every time our previous BMW broke down, it was a 500-2k repair bill. My suggestion...go test drive one and see for yourself.

    With all those 48v systems (I don’t like to call them mild hybrids!) making their way down to mainstream vehicles, isn’t it going to be very complicated (and expensive) to maintain? Because I don’t think it’s a a matter of changing a water pump belt for example if it went wrong, all those accessories are integrated in the 48v system which I’m sure going to be very expensive to fix if it went wrong..... am I right or am I going insane ? It is a common opinion now that "the Germans" have a problem withstanding the test of time. My first memory of German luxury brands (BMW and Merc at that time) was 20 y.o. cars brought to Poland from Germany. That early 2000s.
    Their cars were heavy, thirsty, quiet, comfortable and very reliable.
    Nowadays we hear so much about issues with engines and suspension, not to mention all the electronic but these rarely last long anyway so I understand.
    What has changed during these 20 years? Why these cars no longer hold the opinion of being reliable? Why these companies no longer seem to care about their brand being perceived as reliable?

    • @nicolasmikah4168
      @nicolasmikah4168 5 лет назад +1

      In regards to reliability, because German cars put all these new technologies without testing them for some period, unlike, for example, Lexus, which only use tech that has been tested well for reliability before integrating it in their vehicles.

    • @valdius85
      @valdius85 5 лет назад

      @@nicolasmikah4168 Also, the quality of mechanical components went down. Research about the class suit in USA related to mold.
      The Germans used to be incredibly reliable, now they are just fancy toys that brake down right after the warranty.
      Testing is obviously important, but it depends on the constant factors for testing - like what is the actual life of the vehicle. For most people it is longer than just warranty ;)

At around 25K miles I chipped it to bump the HP up to around 235 and the torque up to 450. Averaged 28MPG, mostly highway driving. Had a couple issues with wheel speed sensors ($25), and one air strut ($400). Then my dad bought it from me, put a few thousand miles on it with no issue, then sold it to my half-brother. It has nearly 200K miles on it and on the way another air strut went. Only recently did my brother have to replace the front disk pads. I replaced the rear disk pads at around 100K miles (go figure). The main reason being mine is coil springs and it seems the e-active body control is a very special an option to have and only comes in 450 with its 48v system. If you ever see this please do let me know is it worth to sell my fully optioned brand new 300d and buy a high mileage 450 just for the fancy air suspension. Ever since I rented the design travesty that is the Ford Taurus a couple months ago, that had heated and cooled leather seats (front and rear) and found out it retails for $26k... I've been saying luxury cars need to do better. Don't charge me for options that come standard in sub $30k vehicles... charge me for something better. Since we all accept Mercedes don't last beyond their warranty, maybe offer Robi the Robot arms that lift my cup out of the cup holder and present it to me... it's only got to last 4-5 years, so offer me something sub $30K cars don't have.

    • @Kystifyable

      He spent the whole episode listing features of the car. Where do you get air suspension/road adaptive supsension/heated and vented cupholders on a 30k car? you don't. The Taurus starts at $27k and only comes standard with Heated/Vented seats at $37k. You sound pretty silly here lad.

      @@Kystifyable You've never been in a Towncar service that used the Chrysler 300C have you? Heated and Cooled cupholders is pretty common in 30-40k American cars. Adaptive suspension is great, but my point is that Mercedes and it's brethren need to step up their game beyond base cars if they are going to charge for these features, which are trim features in a lot of new cheaper cars. I will say material quality is better in MB than Chrysler or Ford, but looking at used car site filters, most people order MB-Tex not leather... which is nice for pleather, but is still pleather.

    • @Kystifyable
      @Kystifyable 5 лет назад

      @@echtogammut MKTech Again, your example defeats itself, a 300c retails for 41k which puts it in square price competition for a C300. And you said it yourself, material quality in that C300 will likely be better. So why does Mercedes have to build more compelling base cars when the car they sell has more *apparent* luxury in both its material quality and NVH characteristics? I'm all for hoping the Germans to build better cars but feature packing American chassis with worse fundamental luxury properties isn't the route imo.

    • @echtogammut
      @echtogammut 5 лет назад

      @@Kystifyable I never talked about MB base cars, if anything MBUX on the A-Class, finally gave it something to marginally justify it's price increase over the competition. I'm not sure if the C-Class has MBUX yet and their non-top-spec C-Class's have to be the lousiest on the market for options. The last time I cross shopped them, they were still charging for keyless door (on a $75K AMG model at that).
      We were talking about their middle of the range, (GLE, E-Class) which when spec'd with Ford Taurus Limited level options are $70k and don't have active suspension or any special features. I will concede about the 300/300c...they all look the same to me, so I assumed they were. The 'leather' in the 300c is easily the worst towncar leather I've experienced, the old Lincoln was better and my favorite has been the G90... but I digress.
