Overall a very good looking SUV, at least in this trim. A few concerns, though: the front bumper, the electronic instrument cluster, and a rear bench that seems a bit too low.

I don't mind the plastic door pockets. In my car, that area is always a mess and it's always getting dirt on it from my shoes. Being plastic just makes it easier to clean.

could you please ask what is the wading depth of the new GLE? The old was rated to 2 ft, a lot less than discovery and range rover sport that can ford a smidge less than 3 ft of water...

My guess about the hard plastic on the lower parts of the doors...... for family’s using it for outdoor pursuits - horse riding, Motocross, Mountain biking, etc i.e. getting in and out with muddy/dirty footwear.

Given that you two were searching for technology to discuss - you probably should have described the quality of the audio system. I drive a GLC, and the Burmester audio was an important deciding factor for me.

I currently own a Benz and have had 5 of them, was excited to drive the gle350. It was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever driven, it struggles to accelerate and struggles to down shift. The engine whines hard when accelerating, sounds like a cheap car struggling. Not sure what Mercedes was thinking but for the first time in years I’ll be skipping the Benz. The GLE450 with adaptive cruise and real leather will cost you over 81k, the price of a Range Rover or Porsche or the bigger GLS450. The tech screen were very nice but the plastics were much cheaper feeling than the old version. Driving the Volvo XC90 after this made the Mercedes seem like a rip off, Volvo has real leather, more autonomous driving features and they are standard not expensive options. Also the Volvo has 60hp more horsepower and was 10k less, I guess my current Benz will be my last. I see why the e300 was a flop in the US, the engine is way underpowered.

There are gorgeous rivals like the audi Q8, the new lincoln aviator or the still great range rover sport with a new in-line 6 cylinder 400hp. I'd skip the new GLE as well as long as I need to replace my audi Q7.

Leasing would be the only option, if I had to finance I'd go with a Honda CRV due to reliability.

I personally am not a fan of the design. The plastic cladding is horrible, and the fake air vents are obviously. I'm also not a fan of the side view. It just looks oddly proportioned. Mercedes exterior designs are either a hit or miss.

the rear of the '19 X5 is also oddly proportioned. the rear bumper sticks out in a manner that makes the rear look disproportionate! still an attractive SUV but i wanted to point that out!

Naturally a lease only vehicle. If you purchase this vehicle, you will be committing seppuku in a NY-minute, due to unfixable electrical gremlins, high maintenance costs and very high depreciation rate.
