OMG, seriously? How exactly, do you imagine that the "elites" got such power? Politics. That's how. Citizens United, duh. 2017 the administration changed the rail systems regulations, duh.
In the new regulations it stated that the railroad companies could self govern. In other words, they were no longer subject to state or federal regulations. As if any corporation can be trusted to regulate themselves. That's politics.
In 2017 Norfolk Southern spent $89 million on lobbying Congress, mire on campaign contributions, and got that really sweet deal, no equipment upgrade, self governing, etc. That's politics. The "elites" didn't arm themselves and shoot up Congress to get that power, they just called in that $89 million dollar favor. The return favor owed by elected officials. People that, guess what? We don't have to elect or reelect.
Do you imagine that you can change laws and regulations to ones that actually serve you by storming the Capitol and shooting up the place? Them"s with the most guns win? Barbaric neanderthal reaction is a pointless waste of time. It's the making of the laws and regulations (the politics) that gave the "elites" the power. And only politics will take that power away. If you don't support the candidates who will not crawl straight into the pockets of the corporations and special interest groups, then you might as well hand the deed to your property to the railroad companies right now. Because you get what you vote for. It's a good argument for knowing your elected leaders and candidates a lot better. Because half the country really has no clue how much and how often their elected leaders vote or act against their best interests.
It all comes down to politics. If things don't change for the better than enough people didn't vote better. No matter how impressive an armory you have in your basement, you can't use your gums to change laws and regulations that give the people's power ovee to the corporations and special interest groups. That's a thing that you change with your vote. Or not. You need to wake up and try to grasp the reality of how the "elites" that you fear and loathe got so powerful, and what it takes to change that fact.

Here it comes. Blame the RR company. Ignore the fact that the industry had been nationalized, (run by the government), for many decades now, and that means it is the governments responsibility. Here comes the attack on free enterprise companies, and they don't even exist in this industry anymore, or any industry anymore sans recreational industries, (to a declining extent itself). If you want to blame the people in charge, blame the government that took over the industry. They are responsible. The "company owners" are just caretakers, following orders. Follow communism if you want and blame the free enterprise that is not there. I know better.

Im a hazmat technician. Before I got laid off because of the pandemic, I worked for an Environmental protection company that was on the first call list for Norfolk Southern. I did countless small jobs cleaning up very small spills here and there. Until a train derailment in Juniata County Pennsylvania. Granted, the cars were only carrying concrete powder. But from my experience working a NS derailment I can say with unwavering certainty that NS doesnt care about residents, their own employees, contract workers or anyone. I spent nearly 2 months working that derailment and not once did I see a single NS representitve on site. NS knows how crucial they are to the grand economic infrastructure of the nation and they use that leverage at every single corner. There is nothing they can't evade. Nothing will be done here long term. NS has the money to suppress news, manufacture their own, bat down virtually every lawsuit and they're gooooood at it. I had a conversation with a member of the public utilities commission who was doing an audit of my workplace. He shed some light on the cause of the derailment and my jaw dropped. Railroads have trackside warning detectors that detect things like a wheel on fire, for example. It’s a common occurrence. When those wayside detectors sound an alarm, it’s transmitted to dispatch and then dispatch contacts the train crew and instructs them further. Usually, crews are required to stop their train, inspect it, and set out the problem car somewhere out of the consist of the train. This particular train passed two functioning wayside detectors and both times an alarm was transmitted to dispatch. Both times, dispatch ignored the problem because the crew was “short on time.” Federal law prohibits railroad workers from exceeding 12 hours of service. It was more important to NS to get this train to its destination without calling another crew to relieve them, than it was to follow proper procedure. They were trying to save a buck.

I worked with that chemical as a compounding operator for over 5 years we had a few different situations where it caught fire inside a heat mixer or simply got hot enough to start smoking. Even just the smoke without an actual fire we had to clear the building and weren't even allowed in the area of the building for days. I used to leave daily covered in the powder every single day just part of the job. Had a dog who was fully healthy for 3.5 years before I started working with it. Less than a year later he started having seizures we didn't know anything at the time and spent at least 30k over the next 2-3 years between medication testing animal hospital stays for as long as 10 days. He would have 1 then another and another every few months even went 8 or 9 months without any but each episode was an average of 10+ in a 24 hour period. I now 6 years after I left the job have a spot under my eye which started as a small spot on my cheek bone/bottom of the eye socket area on my face is now almost the size of my thumb nail and just in the last 2 weeks has spread to my lower eyelid where the eye lashes are but work fulltime just have no insurance and will need it removed also need plastic surgery to repair since it's on the eye lid so I feel for those residents I'm also in ohio just down near Cincinnati. Even if I got the surgery done I drive forklifts and yard trucks to move semi trailers for a living and wouldn't be able to do that for however long it took to heal because I'd have 0 vision in that eye while it heals so just forced to keep putting it off and eventually I am afraid it will possibly cause damage to that eye but can hardly afford living and paying Bill's as it is so I understand them going back to work because they have no choice. Sad that in America in 2023 if you work but can't afford and/or not offered insurance through work but just scrape by you dont qualify for help insurance wise. But you can be a complete waste of space capable of working but wont and get 100% free healthcare??? Broken system they have in place and it's a joke. And healthcare.gov is also a joke decent insurance making 40k a year before taxes and whatever else you pay it says its 350 a month which I don't have lmao so working class people get the shaft period.

When a group of citizens in my neighborhood formed a committe to speak at city hall, they were told that the reason that they chose to cover it up is because they don't want to cause a mass panic due to the fact that there is no cure for cancer and they basically would have to shut down a huge part of the city. Lots of people would end up losing their houses and commercial properties. So, they thought the best thing to do was to just sweep things under the rug. We had men in hazmat suits come take samples of the dust in our homes. People are dying of rare cancers and giving birth to kids with organs outside of their body and some just missing organs altogether.

look up the effects of noise pollution as well, I would also recommend looking into channels like NotJustBikes. The rail issue is not only the fault of the companies but also the fault of the united states government, who made a bad investment into vehicles and are just using the sunk cost fallacy to not give any more funding for rail.
People suck, politics suck, but this goes deeper than consolidation of these companies, especially because the past few times they consolidated was more mandated to stay in business rather than a ploy for money (although it was probably also for the money).
Trains are not the issue, the lack of infrastructure is, and governments just dont pay to upkeep it because car companies have worked so hard to destroy it.

I responded to an emergency repair call down to East Palestine to preform diagnostics on one of the water pumps they had running (private company owned). My shop was the 4th business they called for someone to come down to look at it as all other shops told them to bring it in to their shops, but they did not want to stop the pump with the work that was going on. I responded, driving 2 hours down to the site they had the pumps, and I was concerned. I brought a mask, even a gas mask just in case (my own paranoia). I did not notice any odd smells, though I was concerned about the water vapors from the pump outputs, or well, the mist from the nozzles, tossing out any of the particulates that got into the water back into the air where I was working. Talking to some of the workers, they are also left in the dark with a lot of stuff as the Ohio EPA is trying to get the situation under control after what NS crews left behind.
This situation was clear from the start to be a complete fiasco when the news came out, we all knew there was going to be cover ups, the question now is, how bad is it truly going to be.

Residents were told it was safe. It was not. Everything smelled of black licorice. Before that, I wasn't even aware of a chemical called MCHM.

This really the equivalent of Chernobyl.
If you see how plastic curing chemical work.
It's a liquid whose chemical compounds are made of elements with missing or extra protons.
In other words, "anions and cations"
      In other words "ions"
They are unstable compounds with missing or extra protons that pull or add protons from surrounding material in an attempt to balance itself out and bring it back to a normal state.
Some of these materials it looks to pull from, pretty much include anything and everything made out of material. Including the material that makes up our DNA.
THAT IS WHY URANIAM IS RADIOACTIVE

The right half is completely blank, maybe with a slight bit of frustration. But the left half holds all his emotions. Decide for yourself, but it looks like some combination of anger, rage, disgust, or contempt. There's zero empathy or remorse for his actions. He genuinely doesn't care about the damage he did. Instead, he's upset because someone else is pointing out his cruelty and the pain he caused. That's a man with no morals and no redemption.

I worked for NS for 8 years between 2014 and 2022. Countless times I saw them choose profits over safety. Protecting themselves from a hostile takeover in 2015 they made cuts to safety by lengthening trains and shortening inspections. Once that was over they never reverted to a safer policy. Then in 2019 they implemented "Precision Scheduled Railroading." That is a fancy phrase for make trains even longer and eliminate as many assets as possible to make an illusion of increased profits. They eliminated numerous track inspectors, freight car mechanics and inspectors, locomotive mechanics and even the crews on the trains. They would combine two trains and in some cases three trains and by doing this they would make trains 12,000 or even 15,000 ft long. There is an issue of safety just in that alone but to speed up the inspection of these massive trains they would give car inspectors 45-60 seconds to inspect each freight car. If you took to long guess what, you were written up and eventually fired. Find an issue and they will have someone above you come out and say the freight car/locomotive is good to go. The old man in the beginning is 100% correct. They do not even care about their own employees. You think they care about you?

Here in europe they take about the same time, 30-60 seconds per car. But they do it after every switch, with every car, all in good condition all the time (not hard maintaining freight cars) for perfect infrastructure, never more than 40 cars (15x40=500m max)

@@AlexBaldwin440 Good question. Of course they are inspected all over! They walk down one side, check the back, and walk up the other. Takes around 20 Minutes for 40 cars.

Actually 30 Minutes 30 cars is probably a safer guess, depends on the cars as well (axles, complexity, safety regulations). If there is any hickup, the duration of the process increases to a whole hour very quickly.

NS doesn’t have to ask for permission to move the radioactive waste through Clinton. They just placard a train car and roll it out, they expect everyone to be careful at crossings. The power plant in Clinton is a boon to the state, if it’s properly worked, and allowed to generate power as it was intended.
By the same token, I hope you and your family have a plan if power goes out for over a week. That station might last a week in the aftermath of an EMP attack, it might last a month. Just have a plan for your family to get them away to safely as it is a threat in worse-case scenarios.
