One of the most underrated comedies is Mystery Men starring Ben Stiller. It was made in 1999, pre Marvel / superhero era and the fact it precedes those and makes light of superhero tropes makes it even funnier.
The superhero tropes have existed in comic books for almost a century now, and there were plenty of kids cartoons, low budget TV shows, and B movies featuring superheroes, not to mention the 60s and 90s versions of Batman, and both George and Christopher Reeve’s turns as Superman.
The guy playing guitar and singing the theme song is Jonathan Richman. He was the frontman for the band Modern Lovers from the mid 70s which also included Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison who would be in The Talking Heads after.
"I realized something today, Marry. I'm no better than any of these guys. I mean, none of them love you, really. They're just fixated on you because of how you make them feel about themselves. That's not real love. I don't know what that is." For a raunchy crazy sex comedy that's a pretty deep, honest, and great line.

I like them, don't get me wrong, but I don't really care about them. In Kingpin, There's Something about and Mary, Me, Myself & Irene, we get stories that had the signature off-the-wall comedy, but underneath were stories about people struggling with deeply personal pain and trauma in search of redemption. Technically, I guess you can sort of say that about Dumb and Dumber, since Harry and Lloyd are two lonely, working class guys down on their luck, but since we never get to know them much, they end up just being who they are. Harry and Lloyd just exist apart from the world with very little, if any, change. I don't have the same urge to root for them like I do for Roy Munson, Vanessa, Ishmael, Ted, Mary, Charlie Baileygates, Hank, and Irene. I love Dumb and Dumber, it is one of the Farrelly Brothers' signature classics. It's very much a prototype for their next films. But, even with the serious moments (which are well acted, timed, paced, etc.) it lacks that extra dimension the others did so well. Kingpin in particular, but the other two as well, could deliver the darkest, most gross-out or obnoxious series of jokes in one scene, give you a melancholic/contemplative scene immediately after, send you laughing hysterically after that, before bringing you to tears later on. It makes for not only an amazing comedy, but overall satisfying cinema. (Kingpin is my favorite of their, too). Shallow Hal had this, too, but Shallow Hal is where the formula started to fall apart, but that is a post for another day.
Tucker is played by Lee Evans one the UK's best stand up comedians...on his 2008 tour he broke the world record for biggest audience of 10,108 people on one night and had an audience of 500,000 people over 59 dates...he retired in 2014 after the death of his manager

How is this 25 years old already? Time is a MF'er. Fond memory of seeing this the summer it came out while on a day off from being a camp counselor up in Maine. Me and some mates found a theater that served booze. I had turned 21 only a couple months earlier. The joint was packed and the whole place was in hysterics for at least 10-12 gags. Not sure if I've ever been in a similar cinematic experience since, a crowd that large and that thoroughly united in laughter. It was to the point you start laughing at other people's laughing. I hope you guys get to Kingpin. For my money, the best of the Farrelly Bros movies.

Yep, one of my all time fave comedies. The way it was able to build and build 5-6 scenes just going from bad to worse just had the theater rolling back in the day.
You know it’s gonna be fun when the Schmitts are doing a comedy classic! And especially a comedy classic that also gives us valuable life lessons. Always be careful when zipping up, never piss off the hitchhiker and always stand at least 200 yards away from any anglers! Something About Mary is a comedy of historic significance. It was the first in a new phase of comedy films - super original when it came out, and changed comedy. A lot of films after it had a similar style but this one gets credit for opening up this kind of comedic style film.
Don’t forget the amazing Magda! The actress that plays her, Lynn Shay, is the same actress that plays Elise in all of the Insidious films. She’s also a part of the Ouija series. She is amazingly talented! And trust me… the franks and beans HURTS!!!!! It’s a pain you will never forget. I speak from experience. 😧😬 We had no Doctors or hospitals where I grew up so, yeah, I had to fix it myself!
Don't remember the year, but about 10 years ago Stiller & Diaz were meant to be on the Graham Norton show together just before Christmas, but she was late so he had to end his segment and leave. He left a wrapped Xmas present for her, which was a bottle of hair gel 🤣🤣🤣
This is such a fun movie. The Farrely Brothers really are excellent with comedy. The 90s & 2000s films they did are awesome. Kingpin, Dumb & Dumber, Suck on You, Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hal. Lots of great movies.
My wife and I watched this film when we rented it at Blockbuster. Sitting on the sofa I literally fell to the floor during the frank and beans scene. My jaw hurt so badly from laughter.

I lived down in Florida for 12 years or so about 2 miles away from the "aqua-golf" driving range. They have plaques and stuff up from the filming of the scenes they had there. Pretty neat.
Breakthrough movie IMO during the 90s. It pushed things to the next level which allowed many of those early 2000s films have easy access to pushing the limits. Great reaction guys!
The 90s were rich in movies that pushed boundaries in all genres. Even earlier than the ones you mention were movies like Clerks, and Austin Powers which pushed the limits of comedy, and Swingers, which set up the buddy comedy genre movies like Old School, which I love, American Pie, The Hangover, Hot Tub Time Machine, and others.

When I first saw this in the theater, the "hair gel" scene made me fall out of my chair laughing! I almost peed in my pants I laughed so hard. It was one of the absolute funniest movies I have ever seen.
I was also fortunate to see this in the cinema. I love the Buttercup montage at the end credits, especially the park scene with some of the cast with pants around their ankles while singing. lol.
Soon as Dan says 'there's a scene...' we all instantly know which one. Saw this in cinema, just had a blast watching it. I've actually done the accidental perving on a woman changing like here, so awkward, she's actually famous now too, so I'm always reminded of it tho I'm sure she'll have forgotten. 😬

@TBR Schmitt If you haven't already, I highly recommend you watching Meet The Parents. It's Ben Stiller playing the same type of character he plays in this movie, a sad clown in a nonstop comedic rom com with wild twists and turns from beginning to end.
I recall seeing this movie while traveling overseas. I think I hadn't seen Chris Elliott since he did a short lived sitcom called _"Get a Life"_ that where he played an adult paperboy that lived with his parents. The intro playing the r.e.m. song, _"stand"_ while he tossed papers from his bike is still etched in my mind. I think there were a number of scenes that weren't in the theatrical release, and when this came out on DVD, it was during the initial boom of DVDs and how a large amount of bonus content, like deleted scenes, bloopers, etc., could be included contrasted with vhs. I don't recall if the 13:28 scene demonstrating yet another reason how wookie "had it all" with his wife after Mary was included in the theatrical release I initially saw.

First time watching, I failed to notice the music accompanying Puffy's two big scenes. I was laughing too hard. The second theatrical viewing, Brazil is blasting away and I'm rolling in my seat all over again. Both showings, the audience stood up and cheered after the post credit scenes. Great Efin Movie.
In Finland this movie is called Sekaisin Marista. Sekaisin means many similar things when looking from a dictionary like messed up but also Spaced Out. Spaced Out from Mari suddenly sounds a bit different :)
I've always thought this might be the best comedy ever made. They just throw it right in your face, "We're gonna put a couple of musicians in a tree to start, first of all...." Just a lot of "F it, we're doing this, this way." Really amazing, and strangely effective romantic themes. I remember the "ugly crying" at the end REALLY hit me in a serious way. Amazing weird storytelling. Hilarious. Joy.
I saw this in 98 when it first came out. Had no idea what it was about it was just the next movie starting when I walked in. People were on the floor laughing it was crazy.
I remember as promotion for this movie, a company released those little foam balls that you put on your car antenna in the shape of Puffy in a body cast.
Great movie. They mention Tucker had his friend break his back with a baseball bat when Pat confronts him, but just in general spine is notoriously hard to fix, especially with nerve impingement.
If I remember correctly, Tucker says he paid a guy to take a bat to his back. so he actually got his back broken and he just never let on that he got better.
In reference to Tucker / Norm's injuries, he mentions to Healy that once he met Mary while delivering her a pizza, he became immediately obsessed & had a friend work over his spine with a baseball bat so he would be injured & laid up & need to go to her for medical assistance...so I think at first, he was injured & then kept up the injury so he had reason to always go to her office & be in her life
The guitar and drum player are the farrelly brothers who made the film. Norm got his friends to break his back with baseball bats, it's in the movie. So it was actually broken, Mary isnt shit. Mary dated woogie in high school, broke up was supposed to go out with Ted. Dated woogie again at princeton then got a restraining order against him and changed her name.

Holy moly what theatre screen has 2000 seats? Im not being critical I really want to know, because most in the USA are much smaller than that usually like 150-300. Thats would be awesome to see the same movie with 2K other people in the same room

I didn't know about the "hair gel" scene back then when I saw it. When I did see it, I knew nothing was off the table now. The scene early on with the zipper disaster close-up should've clued me in.

I was cracking up that you saw the TV "censored" version originally. During the full watch-along, I must have had the Director's Cut, so it added even more scenes which enhanced and explained the story a bit further.
The fact that version isn't available these days is pretty criminal. Even the scenes that were cut were really good and added more to the story. But it's still an amazing comedy.
This movie is a lot like “Dumb and Dumber” in that you go into it expecting just a stupid screwball comedy, but it actually has so much more to it than that. Which is why these two movies are classics

Don’t forget the amazing Magda! The actress that plays her, Lynn Shay, is the same actress that plays Elise in all of the Insidious films. She’s also a part of the Ouija series. She is amazingly talented! And trust me… the franks and beans HURTS!!!!! It’s a pain you will never forget. I speak from experience. 😧😬 We had no Doctors or hospitals where I grew up so, yeah, I had to fix it myself!
Don't remember the year, but about 10 years ago Stiller & Diaz were meant to be on the Graham Norton show together just before Christmas, but she was late so he had to end his segment and leave. He left a wrapped Xmas present for her, which was a bottle of hair gel 🤣🤣🤣
Kingpin is another Farrelly bros comedy worth checking out. Toss it on a sports movie poll if it can't win a comedy one 😅
This is such a fun movie. The Farrely Brothers really are excellent with comedy. The 90s & 2000s films they did are awesome. Kingpin, Dumb & Dumber, Suck on You, Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hal. Lots of great movies.

My wife and I watched this film when we rented it at Blockbuster. Sitting on the sofa I literally fell to the floor during the frank and beans scene. My jaw hurt so badly from laughter.

Lee Evans was a British Stand up comedian and actor ( he's retired now), he also appeared in the movie The Fifth Element ( starring Bruce Willis,Milla Jovovich,Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker,Ian Holm, Tiny Lister Jr & more)

I lived down in Florida for 12 years or so about 2 miles away from the "aqua-golf" driving range. They have plaques and stuff up from the filming of the scenes they had there. Pretty neat.
Breakthrough movie IMO during the 90s. It pushed things to the next level which allowed many of those early 2000s films have easy access to pushing the limits. Great reaction guys!
I concur, every few years someone takes a chance and ‘elevates’ it. As comedies go, This for sure, then ‘Old School’ and ‘The Hangover’
I would say dumb and dumber started it.
The 90s were rich in movies that pushed boundaries in all genres. Even earlier than the ones you mention were movies like Clerks, and Austin Powers which pushed the limits of comedy, and Swingers, which set up the buddy comedy genre movies like Old School, which I love, American Pie, The Hangover, Hot Tub Time Machine, and others.

The context in this thread seemed to me to be sexual humor and Buddy Comedies of the 2000s, neither of which apply to Airplane.

The actor that played Warren ( Mary's brother) in this movie is W. Earl Brown who played Kenny The Cameraman in Scream ( who got his throat slashed in the movie) and he played Rock legend/actor Meatloaf in the TV Biopic Meatloaf : To Hell and Back (2000)
When Harland Williams is talking about his "7 Minute Abs" pitch, it was an improvised bit by him and he said he didn't fully realize what he was saying, lol
When I first saw this in the theater, the "hair gel" scene made me fall out of my chair laughing! I almost peed in my pants I laughed so hard. It was one of the absolute funniest movies I have ever seen.
I was also fortunate to see this in the cinema. I love the Buttercup montage at the end credits, especially the park scene with some of the cast with pants around their ankles while singing. lol.
Another classic, love this movie.

I'm not sure how well known she is these days or what name she's known to some by but back in day she was called Saraya Knight, I think they even made a film about her but I've not seen it. She seemed to take the incident in good stead but I never tried to explain it away as I thought it'd seem like I was lying to get out it. 😅
@@VonPunk Ooh interesting. Yes I know who that is and ive seen Fighting with My Family. On the surface it seems like a cheesy Bmovie but it turns into a surprisingly well done, heartfelt and genuinely acted film.
...And with all the wacky sh*t that family went through she probably doesnt remember your situation. Its always best to move past the awkward because ive found trying to explain something away digs the hole deeper haha

@TBR Schmitt If you haven't already, I highly recommend you watching Meet The Parents. It's Ben Stiller playing the same type of character he plays in this movie, a sad clown in a nonstop comedic rom com with wild twists and turns from beginning to end.

I recall seeing this movie while traveling overseas. I think I hadn't seen Chris Elliott since he did a short lived sitcom called _"Get a Life"_ that where he played an adult paperboy that lived with his parents. The intro playing the r.e.m. song, _"stand"_ while he tossed papers from his bike is still etched in my mind.
I think there were a number of scenes that weren't in the theatrical release, and when this came out on DVD, it was during the initial boom of DVDs and how a large amount of bonus content, like deleted scenes, bloopers, etc., could be included contrasted with vhs. I don't recall if the 13:28 scene demonstrating yet another reason how wookie "had it all" with his wife after Mary was included in the theatrical release I initially saw.

First time watching, I failed to notice the music accompanying Puffy's two big scenes. I was laughing too hard. The second theatrical viewing, Brazil is blasting away and I'm rolling in my seat all over again. Both showings, the audience stood up and cheered after the post credit scenes. Great Efin Movie.
In Finland this movie is called Sekaisin Marista. Sekaisin means many similar things when looking from a dictionary like messed up but also Spaced Out. Spaced Out from Mari suddenly sounds a bit different :)
I've always thought this might be the best comedy ever made. They just throw it right in your face, "We're gonna put a couple of musicians in a tree to start, first of all...." Just a lot of "F it, we're doing this, this way." Really amazing, and strangely effective romantic themes. I remember the "ugly crying" at the end REALLY hit me in a serious way. Amazing weird storytelling. Hilarious. Joy.
Keith David, Mary's stepdad, has one of the best comic performances I've seen: "Oh My God, Devil, Satan!"

I saw this in 98 when it first came out. Had no idea what it was about it was just the next movie starting when I walked in. People were on the floor laughing it was crazy.
I saw this in the cinema. The famous hair-gel gag caused riotous laughter in the theatre which rumbled on for a few minutes into the next scene.
I remember as promotion for this movie, a company released those little foam balls that you put on your car antenna in the shape of Puffy in a body cast.
This movie has so many twists and reveals. It's clever stuff.
Why it's probably the greatest rom com of all time IMO.

I love that Matt Dillon played an equally unsavory role in Wild Things which came out the same year as There's Something About Mary.

Great movie. They mention Tucker had his friend break his back with a baseball bat when Pat confronts him, but just in general spine is notoriously hard to fix, especially with nerve impingement.
If I remember correctly, Tucker says he paid a guy to take a bat to his back. so he actually got his back broken and he just never let on that he got better.
In reference to Tucker / Norm's injuries, he mentions to Healy that once he met Mary while delivering her a pizza, he became immediately obsessed & had a friend work over his spine with a baseball bat so he would be injured & laid up & need to go to her for medical assistance...so I think at first, he was injured & then kept up the injury so he had reason to always go to her office & be in her life
As soon as you said that there was one scene you remembered, I knew it had to be either the "hair gel" scene, or the "franks and beans" scene.

Holy moly what theatre screen has 2000 seats? Im not being critical I really want to know, because most in the USA are much smaller than that usually like 150-300. Thats would be awesome to see the same movie with 2K other people in the same room

I didn't know about the "hair gel" scene back then when I saw it. When I did see it, I knew nothing was off the table now. The scene early on with the zipper disaster close-up should've clued me in.
Tucker is played by Lee Evans, a Brit - so when a lot of people think he was putting on a fake English accent, he was actually doing a convincing American accent.
Mary's parents were played by two of the cast of "Night Court".
Best line of the entire movie. HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THE BEANS ABOVE THE FRANK!!!!
I love that he takes out his glasses to see it.. it's the little absurdities about that scene that make it so funny.. and then actually revealing it?? Just perfect.

Samantha's comment about shoes reminded me of what I feel is the best movie in Tom Hanks' early career - The Man With One Red Shoe. So funny, and so romantic while being very twisted. Please review it some time. I'd love to see your reactions.
I was cracking up that you saw the TV "censored" version originally. During the full watch-along, I must have had the Director's Cut, so it added even more scenes which enhanced and explained the story a bit further.
Didn't they call that "There's Something More About Mary" or did I imagine that? 😂
The fact that version isn't available these days is pretty criminal. Even the scenes that were cut were really good and added more to the story. But it's still an amazing comedy.
This movie is a lot like “Dumb and Dumber” in that you go into it expecting just a stupid screwball comedy, but it actually has so much more to it than that. Which is why these two movies are classics
