Once again, Shostakovich’s scoring of the human cough in this symphony is simply masterful
30:05. He was absolutely insane for writing this entire piece. This way this guy understood music was so progressive for his time. That finale is one of his best, if not the.
I am second to no one in my admiration for Maestro Mravinsky, but his insensitive, brusque conducting of one of the four greatest Shostakovich symphonies truly shocked me. If he hates the music so much, why did he bother? HORRIBLE is an understatement for this atrocity. He zips through it in an unprecedented 39 minutes, where most take at least 44 minutes or more. Listen to Haitink with the Berlin Philharmonic or Pogis with the WDR Orchestra to see what is missing. Hell, you could do far better listening to even Gergiev!
At 6:18, the xylophone is one bar early.
Yep, that is right)

Would somebody give that audience some cough medicine?
“William Tell” quote cheapens the music, change my mind!
???
Lame take + L + ratio.
Go touch grass.
I think they mean they changed their mind after hearing this@SpeedySkunk-te6yk
Can't a dying man reminisce and sample his favourite tune? Goes along well with the whole macabre toy shop feel of the piece- morbidly thinking about the childlike state you get reduced to in old age, needing to rely on others, but now it stinks of sickness and impending death.
I don't think so, it kinda recalls Shostakovich's own combat with authority, somewhat similar to Guillaum Tell's story.
