  • Want to look like you have no business behind the helm of a boat? It's easy, turn on your "headlights," or better yet tell others about your boats "headlights" & "light bars"... In all seriousness there's some really good reasons why boats do not have headlights, & if you don't know when to use the "headlight" you should probably watch this video, as not only are you putting your life in danger, but you are putting others in danger too...

Electrical tape??? Do it right, use shrink tubes if you need some seal action then apply electrical tape then use shrink tube over that. Just straight electrical tape turns to goo after a while, will then dry out and be brittle with goo inside and finally you put your hand in it on a hot day to remind yourself not to use electrical tape for 12v 120v 220v 0r 440v repairs and splices. Plus it looks terrible and you went through the trouble soldering it together why not button it up right? People will copy you as well and since a lot of people are stupid (Most unfixable) they will hurt others or themselves thinking they did it right because I watched a RUclips video. You do what you want but the way I see it is you put yourself out there and are now leading by example, that should make you think about how you do things in videos. Emergency ya just do whatever gets you home then fix it right. If it is just a project I live by this, "If ya can't fix it right then don't fix it". Heck on eBay a little plastic box with 100's of tubes all different size cost less than $10. Even Harbor Freight has a assortment for not a lot of money that is fair quality.
Now I did not know about the light in the front I learned something new. I have actually thought about this and wondered why no one does it? Now I know. Still gave a thumbs up and a sub so I can bash your video. Just kidding about that, part. I mean what I say with all the care, RUclips love I got and no disrespect intended. My 51 year old a$$ don't have it in me to things twice. Get it done do it right and unless you screwed it up unintentionally it should be a done deal.

Interesting... I have been chastised for using electric tape in the past. fortunately I just never really have had issues with it. I have found tape from over 40 years ago on my boats electronics that still seems to be doing a good job. So in my experience it works great for me. But I also tend to modify my electronics in my boat a lot, so I suppose that is a big reason why I don't use shrink tube. I am surprised you did appreciated that I was soldering connections on a boat. That too is considered not right. Boat & yachts association has stated it is not the correct way to connect things & it should not be done that way. Quite often the connectors I use fail so I quite & started using solder a while ago. Never had a problem since. I always find it interesting how some things work so well for one person but not another. I am glad you liked the video & learned something. There's so much to learn when it comes to boating, that even I learn new things all the time.

@@ExploreWithThor Funny I just bought a welder and when I buy something used it usually needs a repair or two. I went through what I could I need some parts now so I was getting it all bundled up and put my hand right in a wrapped part of the hose/wire feed tube with gooey electrical tape on it. I could see the nasty glue stringers as I moved my hand away and thought about this conversation LOL. I was to myself "WTF is this, who does this"?? If I did not have bad luck I would not have any so I would put my hand in it and it would be everywhere if I was on your boat. I guess I am all about doing a good job and to me electrical tape is not part of it. Not saying I don't use it on occasion but very very little. For real though viewers on RUclips are idiots and will copy what you do and not do a good job doing it.

I'm really not entirely sure what you mean by gooey... I know sometimes electric tape leaves behind residue when removed, but it doesn't hurt anything. I guess it doesn't really bother me if it does. If it's a problem I just clean it. On the opposite side I don't really like using heat shrink tube for the simple fact I have to use a knife or razor blade to remove it, vrs electric tape I can just peel back with my hands. It really sucks dealing with heat shrink when chasing down a broken wire. Every time it is removed to inspect a connection the whole connection needs to be redone to insert another piece of heat shrink. Everything has a pro & con I suppose. Heat shrink tubes certainly look a lot nicer, & there's the heat shrink tubes with glue in them that create sealed connections, which is very nice for external applications, or underwater lines. I've worked with those a lot.
