- “In that moment, I was not, as a journalist or as a woman, going to put a headscarf on and somehow bind myself…” CNN’s chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour discusses the recent protests in Iran following the death of a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police for showing her hair, the qualms Iranian women have with the government, and how the people of Iran want a democracy. #DailyShow #Comedy

The president just wanted to find a way out of the interview. I support all women, especially oppressed women! Thank you Amanpour for not bowing to an oppressive dictator!
I was kinda hoping she'd agree to wear it, then take it off when they sit down. Agreeing to wear something doesn't mean you agree to wear it for a certain period of time.

It’s nothing to be proud of. A head of state, a dignitary made a cultural request which was selfishly denied. That’s nothing but disgraceful.
@@johnnykwon8173 ' cultural request 'lol . More like being a crybaby if someone doesn't follow that
@@johnnykwon8173 it's not in our "culture" to wear hijab. If it weren't compulsory to wear hijab in Iran, most women wouldn't wear it.
I grew up in Iran and am fortunate enough to live in US now. I’ve seen it all firsthand. Once my sister and I fully covered with proper hejab were taken by these morality guide to a station only because someone called on us that we were laughing while walking on the street. Yes we were talking and laughing but not loud or inappropriately. The worst part was the way we were yelled at and treated like animals but we knew we had to stay quiet and not talk back. This one was just one tiny example. I can write a book about my other experiences with this regime. I love Iran and people of Iran but this regime is nasty
Someone should write such a book, it's a book that needs to be read. You could do it. I would read it.
sad that so many women had to go though that.
The US impoverishes women, particularly minority women. Here's hoping you don't abandon your morality in your new context.
@@ajae... Right, that’s probably why people try so hard to immigrate to US, to get impoverished.
And you'd be subject to the same treatment by the US police...are you sure you made the right move?
She's an icon. She's legend, and she is the moment.
Despots must not be accepted. I soooo admire her. And her voice is so unique, special and authentic.
I read an Iranian man's comment about his motivation to fight that said something like: "For a long time I thought we would have a free nation if we all were set free on equal terms, but I realize now we will only all be free when the women are free. By fighting for the women, I am fighting for myself. " Only as strong as your weakest link! To all the Iranians... keep fighting!
I read a commentary by a female Iranian reformist who predicted their movement against the morality police would be successful because a large number of Iranian men are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the female protestors in support. Bravo.
unfortunately women have to die and suffer for decades for men to come to this conclusion. And now men in the West are going in the other direction, the West is getting more and more anti-female and misogynistic by the day.
@@monicabeaston4996 Yes, I've seen some footage of men standing with women, trying to shield the women from pellets. They're trying very hard to protect the women, so the protests can continue.

It would have never been "an interesting conversation" in any case, because he's an obvious idiot. Agree with all the rest.

Christiane Amanpour is always providing the highest standards of journalism!
I've been living in the United States for 30 years, but in the end of 80th, in the Soviet Union, during Perestroika, all of a sudden CNN was shown by Soviet television! That was the first time we started to see Christiane's international reports from the war zones and fell in love with her! She was the fresh air in the secluded country just taking the iron curtain off!
We still love you, Christiane Amanpour!💖
Let's take a moment to appreciate how gracefully Trevor is interviewing one of the world's greatest journalists.

I know a lot of insecure little men like this man
Meh...for me it's Mary McAleese, who went to Saudi Arabia and refused to cover her head. She pointed out she was the President of Ireland on a diplomatic visit and therefore not subject to sexist religious rules
Not really, she refused a request from a foreign leader in her country. It’s be another thing to do that in Iran.

I would say Christiane Amanpour is one of the top 10 greatest journalists of all time.
I know it got said very fast at the end, but I can recommend the work of the graphic novellist she mentioned, Marjane Satrapi. Her work, Persepolis, in graphic novel form AND the film she made of it really helped me appreciate the beauty, tragedy, and complexity of Iran. Told in a personal stories about herself and her family all the way from the days BEFORE the Shah of Iran was installed by western governments looking to control oil, through the Khomeni revolution, and into current times...in exile by herself in Europe.
I will seek out her interview. I would like to see what Ms. Satrapi's perspective is on current happenings.

@@liviadix1433 Her principles are flaky af, she was fine wearing a hijab for the taliban who are just as bad when it comes to women's rights, actually much much worse. Scarves off, no?
How is Ebrahim Raisi a tyrant? He is a democratically elected ruler of his country and whether people like it or not mandatory hijab has been the law in Iran since the Constitution of Iran was written. He's only doing what an American president would do if faced with a similar uprising against laws that everyone in the country voted for. Lots of people forget that the majority of Iranians voted for the current constitution and support mandatory hijab. I'm from a muslim majority country and a muslim myself. My country doesn't have any law about hijab either forcing it or forbidding it. Yet most women including myself wear hijab not because it's law or our family forced us to. Because at some point in our lives we felt we want to be a better, practicing muslim and wear it to be close to Allah. It's just a way to be close to Allah. But it all comes down to choice. I choose to wear it, my friend might not wear it. It's her choice. No dictator, law should exist that takes your choice away from you. No one should have the power to put you in a scarf or out of it. The Iranian women's movement introduced a form of inspiration.
It is not law for women to have to dress a certain way in the USA. But we DO have laws to control women in other ways, like forcing us to give birth by legislating reproductive health care. Just like in Iran, women want our full rights here as well.
Here’s the thing….. I’m Muslim and this is complete horrible that this has happened and this needed to be protested abt but this is too an extreme. To burning the hijab, what Muslim women still wear as a form of worship, or to throwing it around like it’s nothing, or too mock a whole religion. But what about the Uighur Muslims who were being burned alive for being Muslimor what about the Muslims in china being put into concentration camps right now. They want to wear it but they are being forced to throw it off and I find it disgusting. It’s double standards tbh…..

From Europe: being 73-year old and partnered/later married with an Iranian Shah-refugee since 1979, this interview took me back to those times. I remember clearly that my Iranian students and friends precisely predicted the terrible development pictured in this interview (and no, they were not all communist/socialist adherents). There was one student (male of course) who dared say in our discussions: "But women are human, too".; he almost did not make it home for being so condescending😃
That whole development is one major reason, why I never visited my in-laws in this essentially beautiful country, but only ever met them when they traveled here - I refuse to wear the symbols of an oppressive regime.
