While he was British PM, David Cameron said about returning the diamond, "If you say yes to one you suddenly find the British Museum would be empty. I am afraid to say, it is going to have to stay put." So their defense is... we stole so much that if we gave it back it would be a hardship at how much wealth we would be giving up.
@@jameshudson8334 I assume this is mostly a tongue-in-cheek joke... but that diamond aside, a lot of antiquities held in western museums were just outright stolen from countries that were not controlled territories. That being said, it is also the British that came up with the common law that generally sovereigns and their appointed executives are immune to punishment for outright illegal acts they commit. If my law school memory is correct, it was a British governor who massacred people in his territory and then pardoned himself that enshrined this. Anyway... the diamond even has disputed origin claims that say its not rightfully India's so I don't care. But valuing property that was coercively removed from its ancestral home, whether legal or not, means subjectively valuing property over the life and goodwill relationship of other people. That is not something to either defend or be proud of. It also shows how poor a country is at its roots as they are admitting to not being able to make up for the economic loss.
I tried to explain this to my Western social circle and they do not understand. They said, "why are you still holding a grudge when it is in the past?" Easy for you to say when your country was not looted, invaded, and sliced up to be divided to the European nations.
As a Malaysian, is ironic how you’re complaining about Europeans dividing others, when if I guess correctly China was involved in doing that too.. just because it happened domestically, it is still divide & conquer. But I guess it is only wrong when Europeans do it..
I agree eith Aizac91. In my east european country, we were invaded, looted, sliced by other european countries, it’s just the way it’s always been, the stronger ones write the history. We enslaved our own other white people, and no one called it racism. We need to let go and make the most of what we have.
South Koreans feel the same towards Japan except for the clans who sold out Korea to Japan. Yes, we couldn't get rid of them unlike what European did to Nazis. And it still causes a lot of problems.. And then Japanese government rewrote history and spreading it globally.. It's a mess....
I’m Irish and we were under English/British rule for longer than any other country - almost 8 centuries. And yet I don’t hold a grudge: I live in the present. So I would respectfully suggest to you - and to others with a similar victim mentality - that it’s time to build a bridge and get over the past. How pathetic it is to wallow in victimhood over things that didn’t actually happen to you. If we all did that, we’d all hate everyone because if one cares to look you’ll find that most nations committed crimes against others in the past and that the concept of empire did not begin and end with the British: the Mongolians, the Romans, the Turks, the Persians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Aztecs - one could go on - all had empires. Should all of the peoples who were once part of those empires against their will continue to hate or hold grudges against those countries forever and for all time? Would that be conducive to a peaceful and harmonious world? I don’t think so.
