According to Wikipedia, an Argentinian Unimog 416 with original improved OM352 100hp 6 cyl. Diesel is very rare. Only a few were built as factory tractors. IDK their value, but it could be significantly higher than average Unimogs.
Our 89 flu419 fires right up in the winter after sitting for a month or so. Temps around single digits and teens. Normally fires as soon as you hit the start button.
Is that the six cylinder engine (it sounds like it)? I had a 1970 U 406 which is the short wheel base version of the 416. The engine was the best thing about it. The 1970 version was not fitted with glow plugs but had an ether reservoir and a hand pump to squirt it into the air inlet-though it was all disconnected when I got it. I never bothered re plumbing it because if it was cold enough to need it then it wouldn't turn over because the electrics were all knackered. I am sure if it had cranked as well as the one in the video it would have started without ether well below freezing.
+mlhill2002 Yes, it's the same 6 cylinder (OM352) engine in this one. But yes, even without the pre-heating, (it's also missing on mine) these will usually fire up anyway. Thanks for watching.
Yah, its 6zyl motor. When battery and starter are on quite good conditions its easy do start even near -10C. But when ist much colder and oil is not so good start could be a problem. Better way is to have 2 battery 6V in place one 12V batt. Second: use start-pilot. When start-pilot doesnt work, the best way to start engine is pre-hot air by gas-stove, near air intake while starting.
TeamArmyTrucks what a beautiful engine sound of Mercedes benz om 352 series six cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine? My question to you is can I install this engine in my Jeep? Because I am very much fond of the sound of six cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine either of Mercedes benz Germany or of Leyland Motors England. Please reply me quickly I am very much anxiously waiting for your reply.
The glow plugs were not working and so one has to start cold and use up the starter. One can series jump glow plugs in a 4 cylinder like this and find atleast one or two plugs that work. I have started this style of MB in 10 below F; just take a lot of battery and holding the injector pump rail wide open all the time.
@@leoborn6595 Hay Leo, Thanks for the education. My dad used to tell about old CAT Diesels that required one to heat up a bolt with a little oil heater and then screw the hot bolt into the cylinder and that would start a Diesel. Nice weather here in Chicago; hope you're having the same.
45sec with starter?? What with Start-Pilot system, which were installed in Unimogs? Nex time when You try to start cold diesel, make it in parts: 6-8 seconds on starter, 4-5 sec break. It's much better for battery and starter. And 3/4 throttle ;) But the best way is gas stove into air intake on head cap.
This was without any pre-heat or "start-pilot" the truck was missing a few parts, so it wasn't working. But you are right, it's not ideal to turn the starter for that long. But thanks for watching!
Of course! Thats what i would do! Well jokes aside, the new unimogs are really great and comftable to drive. (For that kind of truck) so if you got the cash, go for it!
Seems to be a bit impatient to start it. Older Merc diesels need to have the pre-heaters / glow plugs engaged for 3 mins min, otherwise hard to start. Or.........put a 6V starter mtr in it,.....or 'ether' it,(but not with glow plugs operating). ...or use WD40 in lieu of ether................or just sit for 3mins then fire 'er up::)
+arriviste2020 3 mins? 6v? seems way too long you'll kill glo-plugs pretty quck that way, my vw is a bit smaller but in 10F i count to 10 then crank and she fires right up and i fail to see the advantsge of a 6v over a 12v starter
Ryan Armstrong On old Mercs the glow plugs were heavy duty. Starting first thing in the morning on a cold winters day was not a 10 sec job. As for the 6v str mtr. Useful for VW's as well (if 12 v system) The 6v mtr spins the engine over at high rpm. Using 18v batt is another easy option. There again, two 12v batts in series with a breaker sw. give lots of cranking power. All depend on your level of experience, knowledge, imagination and willingness to experiment Using a 6v str mtr taken from a BMW 1800 and fitting it to a BMW 2002, fitted with twin Webers, "hot eng " etc.Ensured easy starting on very cold mornings. It all depends on the individual involved. I have started EMD diesel engs at 40F below zero, so I have a general grasp of what is involved...
arriviste2020 I am very new to dieseI and was genuinely curious is all (also it was late and I was tired and had been drinking hence my tone), my only experience with diesels so far is my 1981 vw rabbit, and I wasn't sure what the result would be if you ran a 6v starter on a 12v system whether it would crank over super fast or fry it pretty quickly, or why there would be a need for 3min glow, and I've toyed with 18v and 24v with a cut off switch but ended up just running a second battery in parallel for the extra amps and capacity. All of the above is very overkill in my case but I had the battery lying around and was having trouble starting due to gummy injectors which i have since changed
Hejsa. MAN 8 er skam en god lille terræn lastbil. Men de har det desværre med at ruste op i kabinen. Ellers er det en stærk lille motor de har.Og de er nemme at lave.

Yes. Well to be fair, hes not far off. The were originally designed by puch-daimler so you can find a few with a puch badge. But main production were taken over by daimler-benz. So most of them will have a mercedes badge. (There is also a peugeot built one, called P4) Anyway, thanks for watching!

That vehicle is a gem that deserves it's own covered car park! :)
Nice video. It's so relaxing to see the Unimog floating over the snow!
I love the sound of that cranking! Great!
unimog also starts at -30° without problems.

Its a old aged diesel. This engine needs a pre heating this is why it took so long.
+Dalle Smalhals shouldn't start so slow with pre-heating/glow-plugs it would start almost immediately
old merces diesel engines had no pre heating. it was designed to start with start pilot in cold weather
