We have had -8°C in South West London the last couple of mornings, which although is not cold compared to many other places, my 17 year old Transit Connect TDCi does have to crank over a few extra times, but still fires up well, and ticks over sweet. It is looked after, but the cold still effects the diesel and makes it go to a thicker viscosity, so I am always impressed by the old girl. A good battery also helps 💯😎😎

92 Honda Civic si hatch , 449 thousand kms, no block heater, northern British Columbia, -42 c. Almost all of our new pickups wouldn’t start. Walked out to ol reliable 🚗 and within 4 seconds, it started, power steering pump was groaning away for a couple minutes but no problem. Drove to town because the work day was called on account of something, can’t remember what tho😁

5:10 you don‘t do that when it‘s that cold unless you wanna shorten the life of that precious piece of craftsmanship drastically. 😩 Let it find a good idle for a minute and then slowly increase the rpm to 2.5 k when driving. Once the engine oil has reached 175 F you can use full rpm. Basic knowledge taught at driving school (well, at least in Germany).

I wish I had videoed me starting my 2003 EJ20 N/a Subaru Forester when we have the first "Beast from the East" in the UK in 2013. The forecast was for -13C but when I went out to the car it was saying -17C on the dash (it was parked facing into a field where there was no shelter for about 1km so was in a more extreme location than normal).
It wound over 3 times, getting slower and slower with each swing as the battery gave up, I don't think it would have made a 4th revolution if needed:
    Newuh, newuuh; neeewuuuuh: ne-vroooom!
I went straight to an auto parts store and got the battery changed. Living in the middle of nowhere I was very grateful for Japanese reliability that morning...

A little trick esoeci3 at older diesels.
Diesels have the pre heat phase you turn the key wait for the yellow sign to go out(pre heating done) and you turn the key to cranck the engine.
The trick is to not crank but turn the key off again.
Repeat ignition phase 2-3 times without trying to crank the engine.
Only after that when enough heat has built up inside the cylinders and around the glow plugs do you crank the engine.
    Much more easy start.
