Let's see. This year for Emma, Female World Champion Brompton Cyclist and World Record Uphill Hour Holder. Well, Dan did ride for the Cervelo Test Team, so it's about even.
Emma, you're amazing! 230 - 250 watts for 1 hour. I know you are disappointed but us mere mortals would be over the moon if we'd ridden that quick uphill. I've got to be at least 10kg heavier than you and would struggle to put out that kind of power for an hour. Chapeau ! 👌
@man0z Where do you live? I have done 450 km this week with avg temperature about 0°C. Iusually do about 130 Per week but Rapha 500... If you want to get fit just find buddies you enjoy riding with, then you dont have to go out on your own. I stqarted cayling regularly 1.5 years ago and i am very happy with my improvements, which i couldnt have reached alone. I have no idea how smoking slows that down though, when i was 5 my dad said smoking makes you slower when riding a bike and since i wanted to be fast i didnt every think about trying it.
I can do about 225 W for an hour. But I'm close to twice her weight. She seemed to be zooming up that insane climb. And she makes it look so easy. Clearly pro riders are not like the rest of us.
Emma has really grown as a presenter so quickly. I was wary when Matt left and them bringing in new people I wasn't familiar with but now I get just as stoked when I see Emma is in a video as I did with Matt.
Wow, all my cycling life was thinking that VAM was Vertical Ascension Meters (per hour) and not that... what you said. My life will not be the same... Amazing job by Emma!!!
Not finding the BIG thumbs up button. Where is it? Maybe Google should start designing one for cases like this. Awsome effort, Emma! Thanks for inspiring through perspiring.
I really like this presenting combination of Emma and Chris. Great production values. And phenomenal climb. As a ex-sprinter, I salute you and absolutely acknowledge on my best day, I wouldn't have a chance.
I really enjoy watching all your shows, particularly Emma so much at ease! One regret though: you are all less than half my age and I feel that sometimes you could address more the needs and limits of those who are a bit “less” young than you, I imagine titles like :”how to set up your pace maker for Alp d’Huez “or “riding with a new hip”...I am joking of course but... some of us more advanced in age could benefit from your expert advices. I still don’t know what my real bpm limit is at 71!
If you want to find it out you should do a Test. Just take a local climb that is about 10 min in length, just do a warmup and then tackel it at a rate you can sustain for maybe 5 minutes and just go as hard as you can amnd ignore the pain, just finish when the legs give up and your speed drops even though you try to sprint, then you should find your maximum Hartrate.
Right now it's off season where I'm at and during the summer here in Texas I purposely look for gut-wrenching hills to take on. You're sweating profusely you want to get off the bike your mind is telling you to stop but your heart is telling your hands to click those gears and your legs are saying to much Lactaid but you never give up and day after day after day those hills become nothing. Very proud of you never give up
Yikes! Ouch this just looks sore watching it! Really feel for Emma all that effort and still disappointed that she set a new record. I am sure that given the right time and possibly some cooler conditions then she would be able to set both a faster time and end up with a higher amount of vertical meters gained. I wonder what her rate of ascent was when coming 2nd in the Taiwan KOM this year... interesting. Emma would still ride the legs off me on any climb and I think that it a monumental effort that anyone should be proud of! Well done Emma! (also Chris for being a super supportive team mate!)
traderz13 The record wouldn’t stand very long. She averaged somewhere between 4.6 and 4.8 w/kg for an hour. That is very very impressive, but female world class riders can hold north of 5 w/kg and 6w/kg for men.
Lollo Finn Even that would be surprising. She has retired quite a while ago. A female cyclist of similar ability as Emma, but whose retirement has been more recently, will likely also break the record somewhat easily. I by no means want to shame Emma, who is a fantastic athlete. It’s just not world record stuff...
Congratulations Emma! Thanks for giving it your all for us on camera. Much respect and please don't be too hard on yourself ... enjoy your accomplishments - and the journey. You dug deep to reach glorious heights!
Emma since you started working on the GCN you have motivated me to do more hill climbing don't be disappointed with yourself I think you are extraordinary woman everytime I see you doing the Hillclimb I wish I was there to learn from you since I live in a flat area in South New Jersey U.S. Awesome job on that hill climb hope you keep that record for a long time and no one defeats you.
"Man that was rubbish " your words Emma not mine. My words are well done Emma and there are plenty of us young and old would love to have your ability.
Dear Emma, thanks for the video could you do a video about what it’s like to take part in an olympics? Most of us have no idea what it’s like to race at the highest level
Great effort Emma! And nice work recording the record Chris! It would be nice to see some pros trying this record, maybe GCN has just kickstarted a series of attempts (as Jens Voigt in the track hour record).
Emma and Chris - you should go ride Mauna Kea and make a video! It's the hardest and longest climb in the world, and you can definitely climb at over 10% avg grade for longer than 14km, but even better: at a max altitude of over 4000m!
Great video and great ride. I've had the chance to climb a few kilometres in my life with Emma. Her commentary is so authentic and her humility is endearing but unjust for such an accomplished rider.
Congrats. Emma please put together an oval chainring video that combines your experience with them as a pro with GCN does science. Maybe combine with a top 10 ten reasons to use them vs 10 reasons not...
Amazing effort Emma.! 230 w average is still phenomenal, even though when she was race fit she probably would have been faster. plus the heat would have made it harder. Would love to do it , maybe aim for a over 65 age group best
Emma continues to amaze me to a new level in each new video. Anybody elses stomach get tight and start grinding in their head to want to help her up the climb? Mad props to her
I must say that Emma has become my favourite GCN presenter. Her humility and cut-the-crap, no nonsense style is so refreshing, not to mention my admiration for her as a cyclist.
Congrats Emma! You're amazing, I bet that hurt! This coming August I'm doing he mount Washington bike race in New Hampshire. I know I'm so going to puke lol.
@@steveb3671 It's quite obvious that the authorities in Oman aren't cycle friendly or have some authoritarian axe to grind, as 'who's allowed' and 'who isn't' seems to be based on petty favoritism or money. You could have at least trotted out a 'safety' reason to excuse the inexcusable. Really though, what the point of featuring a road that cyclists aren't allowed to cycle on on cycling YT channel, seems daft. It's like going to Mallorca and find out that Sa Calobra is only for cars and buses.
MEGA thumbs Emma! Awesome!! Living in Andorra here we either go up or we go down and we all know the feeling of climbing for an hour, or more! The going down though is reward for the upward suffering.
Wow Emma, You rock! That was an amazing climb. New world record. Another amazing feather in your cap. Yeah you might be retired but your still rocking it. Smooth roads and a nice tailwind for you.
Excellent. Chris and Emma a great team and epic ride by Emma. Amusing cringing and entertaining. More in the spirit of mad Matt. Enjoy your 2019. More .... more. .... more
Yay Emma! I love the mental discipline and determination you show, especially in the heat. I'm a late riser that used to live in California and I'm very aware of how hot and torturous a shadeless climb can be at maximum effort. Maybe try at sunrise next time? Can your support vehicle spray you with water, is that legal? Regardless, you were brilliant!
A 1h VAM of 1275m is absolutely stunning, great effort! Even more so considering the weight ratio with your bike. I usually start a season with a 1h VAM around 800m and I am happy if I improve to 950m till fall and this improvement feels massive, can't even imagine what close to 1300m must be like.
Great work Emma, you suffered for a great cause. And you continued after being sick! Most riders would have sagged out straight to the emergency room, but you carried on climbing.
Without trying I also had a go at this record this year! I climbed 1012 m of ascent in exactly an hour (13.5 km at 7.4%). Strava tells I averaged 222 watts and with my weight of 67 kg that only makes 3.3 w/kg. Chapeau Ema! Amazing to see what retired pros can still do!
Super work Dr Pooley! An inspiration to us all for your positive attitude to a challenge. We also see a bit of the champion's mind: sets new record, wants to beat it.
My best VAM value is from Alpe d'Huez, around 1250 meters - good weather, I wasn't fresh but I was not really tired either. I think that the top pro performance is around 1850 meters (Pantani)
Awesome job Emma! i am riding around the world on a bicycle, I can tell you about those long climbs! I dread climbs, but after the fact I am thrilled about the achievement, might I mention I get off and push many times... so, don’t feel bad, do it again when you get the chance!
I know some might say that if you have had Christmas off on holiday..... you should be able to go the extra mile.... but OMG, what an amazing effort Emma !!!!! Take the rest of the year off :D
Fantastic and what makes it even more incredible is it appears Emma did it not do it 100% fresh unless it was selective editing? That is, she rode some distance before starting the hour ride.
I'm gonna make a big bow for Emma... What a monumental effort! One should also remember the influence of the temperature on the performance, if it had been 10-15C surely 10-20Watts would have been likely.
Emma has over 4000 QOMs on Strava, like 3rd by total in the world. Is it possible to be more understated?
What are QOMs?
I believe its the female equivalent of King of the mountain

Must be it.
Yep. She thinks like a champ
Yeah I got really disappointed that I only increased my ftp 18 points more instead of 20
What’s crazy was that Chris was able to ride even faster than Emma and was able to stop and set up the camera and film without breaking a sweat!!!
Somebody pass me my headache pills
That must mean just one thing: he was using an e-bike on max power help!
rochajoel oh god...
What a legend!
Yes and the camera team was running up that hill even faster. Are you so dump
Don't mess with Emma when it comes to climbing a bike. No wonder she won the presenters climb out of the saddle race. She is a beast. .
"climbing a bike"? She is a boss at riding, but "climbing a bike" is not her strong suit, see her racing cyclocross 😝
For sure.
Let's give it to GCN, their videos always get better and better.
GCN is the only channel that I can forgive for doing purely promotional videos under the guise of "tech reviews", because they use their funds and free time to do epic videos like this.
Agreed. Using real music instead of "generic upbeat instrumental song #28753" really added to this video.
