  • In a place where women live happily without men, what role does beauty have?
To find out, we visited the Monastery of Our lady of the Rosary in Summit, New Jersey, a Dominican Monastery with 19 nuns aged 25 to 91. We got an exclusive look into how nuns live their lives, their habits, and why they make, of all things, soap. Sister Mary Martin, the Prioress of the Monastery, and Sister Marie Veronica offered sage advice about beauty, but we also learned that nuns are not without a sense of humor!
Thank you so much to everyone at Our Lady of the Rosary. Visit their website here: www.summitdominicans.org
    And buy their soap!

Minute -4:15 is beautiful. That's what BEAUTY is. Also soap is not a beauty product lol. It's a cleaning product. Hygienic product.

Yes, that struck me as strange at the same time it also explained why too many men do not clean themselves well, if that is their mentality.

Beauty isn't about physical beauty . Physical beauty is just a pale and craven subset of Beauty. God is beautiful, and all is beautiful insofar as it participates in this source.

Where did the idea come from? Can you find a nun in the Bible?

    • @mariabrandell8519
      @mariabrandell8519 2 года назад

It's a really ancient tradition, that technically begins with the monastic Essenes (almost like Jewish monks) of Jesus' day. Many early Christian martyrs were consecrated virgins, women who refused to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Hermits and monastic life took shape in the early centuries of the Church history, although there's been a lot of development on the different kinds of religious orders and apostolates since then. "Nun" is not a word in the Bible, but you do see Paul talking about how it is better to live a celibate life, which is why people started doing it, I presume.

@@mariabrandell8519 Thanks for your respond :) I suppose it is probable that this idea has a long ancient tradition. Maybe it even comes from Jewish monks etc., but it's good to keep in mind that their traditions had often nothing to do with God's instruction reveled in the Bible. Indeed, Paul's teaching about marriage give us encouragement to stay alone, but it is just an advice, not commandment. Nobody, who wants sincerely serve God, must abstain from marriage. However, the celibat is not the main issue, but rather the whole idea of monastery, strict order, many rituals, religious practices, which are not found in the Bible. God bless!

@@arkadiuszdec2493 Thank you for your kind response back! I would hesitate to say that Jewish traditions have nothing to do with God's revelation in the Bible, as that is directly the place that these traditions developed from. Further food for thought: John the Baptist, based on the Qumran scrolls discovery, is thought to have belonged to this Essene community, as his ascetical practices align with what was discovered about this community. However, just on the basis of John the Baptist alone, you would be hard-pressed to discount ascetical practices. What else would you call wearing camels hair and eating a vegan diet of honey and locusts! I'm sure it wasn't for health reasons :) Haha even the nuns are not as strict as John the Baptist!
As far as the idea of a monastery, it sounds pretty close to the description you find of the early Apostolic communities. Just check out Acts 2:42! Like the early Christians, nuns devote themselves to the Apostles teaching (they read and pray Scripture every day) and fellowship (they live community life together like a family), they devote themselves to the "breaking of the bread" (in Mass with the Eucharist, "do this in remembrance of me"), and to prayer (they pray the psalms together multiple times a day, and also have time for personal prayer time with Jesus). Like in Acts 2:44, they also hold everything in common.
      God bless you as well!

@@mariabrandell8519 Obviously, the Bible is the root of Jewish belief, but unfortunately they also developed their own tradition, that was often treated with greater honor, above God's law. “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?" Matthew 15,3 (I recommend to read the wider context 15,1-20) I don't think John the Baptist could belong to this Essene community, but he was really ascetic. However, modest dress and natural healthy vegan diet is not related to religious rituals. Beyond this, he was unique special Prophet who prepared the right path before Jesus' coming.
I agree with this view of fellowship from Acts. It should have been our example and model to imitate. Probably many communities today have lost this indicator. I should still have been molded by this as well. However, I see some differences. Concerning Nuns, they have strict unique uniform, often are closed in one place among themselves, recite the rosary, and so forth, or other many catholic rituals, which I don't see in the Bible.

@@arkadiuszdec2493 In full disclosure, Arkadiusz, I am defending the nuns because A) I believe it is an authentic expression of Christianity and not anti-Biblical, and B) because I actually very much want to join a Monastic Order. In fact, I am hoping to do so within the next two years. I know that convictions do not determine right or wrong, but I personally would not be willing to give everything of my life up to be a nun unless I was 100% sure this was a fully authentic Christian life. That, I think, says at least something. I really want to love Jesus and follow Him, and I feel very drawn to this life because I think it is how He is asking me to follow Him. I don't think everyone has this calling, but I do believe I have it.
Second, I don't mean to drag on this conversation if you don't want to have it. I do, I think it is good and exciting to have dialogue like this! And if you do, I think we should narrow it down to one thing at a time. I think that thing should be the "many catholic rituals," which seems to be the heart of our disagreement. My first question would be, what are the "other many Catholic rituals" besides the rosary that you are referring to? It's hard to see where you are coming from, or provide an adequate defense for your criticisms if I don't know the things you are taking issue with first.
As far as the rosary goes, it is basically Scripture, so hardly anti-Biblical. It's simply a way to pray with Scripture, just like one can pray Scripture by singing it in hymns, studying it in a Bible study, meditating on it, memorizing it, etc. The rosary is basically thinking of Scripture while saying Scripture out loud. The Hail Mary, Our Father, and Glory Be come from Scripture. So what happens is that you pray these Scriptures while simultaneously thinking/praying/meditating on different parts of the life of Christ. You do this for each "decade." After praying the Scriptural hail mary 10x, you do it again, but pick a different time in the life of Christ to pray with (such as his birth, or his resurrection, etc). How is this anti-Bible? It seems like an awesome way to pray with the Bible to me!
One argument I have heard is that praying the same thing over and over again is not good, it is ritualistic, or anti-Biblical. But it seems that repetition is very important. Many aspects of Christianity are repetitions. We celebrate the same feasts on the same day year after year after year. We pray the same prayer before meals or Our Father day after day after day. In order to memorize Scripture, we have to repeat it. Do you think Jesus or the early Christians had a rule against repeating Scripture too many times? I would be shocked if that were the case.
