Despite the research cited, there is some debate in the literature about omega 3s but a lot of that can be lost in the small nuances of the research being conducted.
Personally, at least on the topic of dry eye, I have found the majority of research supports omega 3s can help improve meibomian gland secretions, reduce tear film inflammation, stabilize the tear film, and improve dry eye symptoms.
Note: Dry eye syndrome can be complicated by other forms of ocular surface disease and it is always best to consult with your local eye care professional if you are experiencing any eye pain or vision changes.

Have you had success with omega 3s? EIther by changing your diet or taking a specific supplement? Which brand/ amount worked best for you?
'Amway' brand is best. They also have other supplements which are highly effective.
Nordic natural liquid pro omega xtra
I truly love what you're doing here, and its helped me a lot... But I have a press need and that is my eyesight have been deteriorating in the sense that I find it difficult to see clearly most times I strain to see clearly and even get terrible headaches. Visited 2 different eye clinics but nothing was found, I was given some meds and even changed my glasses but still no improvement, please help😩
P.s I'm myopic.
I’ve taken Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega-D3. Recently I switch to Nordic Naturals ProDHA Eye (omega 3: 1460mg- EPA 360mg+ DHA 845mg; lutein 20mg ; zeaxanthin 4mg). I do eat wild sockeye salmon regularly too.
And I’m still confused about the EPA:DHA ratio as different sources say different things. And we know DHA is good for the brain, it means good for the eyes. EPA is good for anti inflammation and heart health. ?!?! Confusing
Here in India I'm taking Wow Omega 3 supplements (550:350 EPA:DHA).... It really helped me to control inflammation in Meiboiman gland
I use Nordic and it had helped me with my dry eyes (specially after LAZK eye surgery) among other things. Thank you doctor for sharing the knowledge.
how s your dry eye now??
@@Sureshkumar-mb1xf are you taking it too? im starting, ill know it'll help me
How long did it take
Extremely helpful. Not everyone is a medical professional who can follow the research! Labels are confusing to many of us.
Thank you for not reaching out to brands to make this a sponsored video. So many of the doctors on RUclips give you "medical" advice and tell you to use a product that's paying them thousands of dollars. It's so unethical and makes me lose trust in all of them.
I just started taking the Omega-3 supplement from Sports Research. They are in TG form. Each soft gel pill contains 1040 mg of Omega-3, 690 mg in EPA and 260 mg in DHA, almost a 3:1 ratio. Taking 2 pills daily for ~2000 mg of Omega-3, with a 180-pill 3-month supply, it averages out to ~50 cents per day. The oil comes solely from Alaska pollocks, which is low in mercury. The gel capsule is made from fish gelatin, not land animals.
Ty this is what I was looking for
I just want to share that i tried both the nordic and prn after watching this vid and both helps on my dry eyes. Another benefit is that my BP is now lower. I used to have a moderately high diastolic in 130s. It is now in 112s to 120s. It also increased my HDL. I'm now a believer of fish oil benefits. 😊
Btw, thank you so much for sharing the benefits of fish oil in dry eyes.
When do you take fish oil ? In empty somach or after meal. And how many peals in a day?
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your research and this video in particular! I have suffered from extreme dry eye caused by Sjogrens disease. It was so bad I couldn’t sleep over two hours at a time without severe pain on trying to open my eyes. It wasn’t uncommon to feel like I was being pierced with pitchforks and seriously thought life would be better without my eyes! It would get so bad, I was experiencing corneal abrasions every few weeks, then steroids to heal. All that while using Xiidra (very expensive!), Tryvaya nasal spray for dry eyes and a myriad of OTC PF drops. In other words, nothing was making a difference, let alone improving the situation. My local eye doctor and one specialist were of little help. I even had duct plugs put in. No help!
Then I saw this video and immediately ordered PRN DE3. It has been four months since I started taking three a day and I am off all the prescriptions, I use just a few drops of Oasis per day, the plugs are out, and I can sleep for hours and hours with no difficulty opening my eyes on awakening.
It has been LIFE CHANGING! I just cannot thank you enough. What a difference Omega 3 can make. Please continue researching and posting your findings!
Hello, having SS myself and a suffferer from dry eyes and mouth i am so happy for you, how are you donig now? Do you still take these supplements? And does it help with dry mouth too? If you have it
May I ask the whole name of this supplement so I can look it up, ty for your comment
I love your honesty and pls don’t do advertising to any companies
Thanks for the continued, and helpful content. My optometrist also recommended PRN for my dry eye problem. It is also supposed to be easier on your gastrointestinal system. My research brought me to your channel again, and I am grateful for the information. The cost, as pointed out, is a prohibitive factor for many suffering with dry eyes.
Interesting! I use the Nordic Naturals x2 and I have never experienced any fishy taste or smell at all. I'd suspect that bottle might be rancid if it's tasting fishy.... weird! The Nordic Naturals is the only brand I have had success with as far as taste. Although, I do store mine in the freezer and to keep the oil as fresh as possible - some people say storing in the freezer helps neutralize the fish taste, so perhaps that's why I've never had issues.
Love this video so much and all the info given, you rock! I like to learn.
I recently was diagnosed with acute angle-closure glaucoma (narrow angle). I had laser iridotomy surgery done on both eyes. Dr. McConnell took a lot of time explaining and recommending resources I could use to research glaucoma. Before that, I "assumed" there was just glaucoma. I wasn't aware that there were different kinds, etc. Maybe, when you have time, you can cover glaucoma. The incredible pressure and pain in my eye could have easily been dismissed by me. I originally thought it was a cluster headache/migraine. Since it felt like my eye was going to explode, split open, I called the Ophthalmologist first. I'm glad I did. * I just watched your live stream video from 3 months ago. Thank you for the information. It was very informative.
Follow up I stated taking Omega 3 weeks ago after seeing this after a week I had no dry eyes. My eyes are still great in the mornings no gritty feeling When waking up and no more dry eyes.
I use Nordic Naturals as well. One thing to note is if you're taking anything like garlic, definitely ask your doctor if you can take both as their both have blood thinning properties.
I actually take one Nordic natural pill and one Theratears pill. Theratears has Vitamin E which in important in preventing "depletion of DHA". Thought it was a decent combo. :)
Thanks for your great videos Doc!
I like Nordic Naturals cod liver oil
Vitamin E is a blood thinner
@@MF-ty2zn1 In large quantities, yes. There's only 120mg of Vit E in Theratears.
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin E varies depending on age and sex. For adults, the RDA ranges from 15 to 20 milligrams (mg) per day. The upper tolerable intake level (UL), which represents the highest daily intake unlikely to cause adverse effects, is set at 1,000 mg of supplemental Vitamin E per day for adults.
Do you intake garlic daily?
@@e47kz i just bought some - I havent yet cause im just making sure I can with fish oil.
This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I’ve been dealing with dry eye for about 2-3 years now and the warm compresses and eye drops only do so much. I had bought a couple bottles of the Nordic naturals but I also wasn’t a fan of the taste so they sat in the cupboard. I’m going to use them up and then try the Physicians Nutritaceutical!
The PRN is what my optometrist recommended! Good to know!
I am taking Eskimo fish oil for my dry eyes its apsolutely great it's a little expensive but realy worth every penny it's the real clean fish oil.
this helped me so much oh my god. all these drops, cleansing routines, pillow cases, different makeups, did nothing and taking a darn fish pill basically solved it.
Glad it helped!
How long did it take before you noticed improvement?
@@jaytee2642 I think a week or 2, it seemed pretty quick. I think partially because I try to eat mostly vegetarian so I just have so little fat in my diet
I also just got the omega 3 from Walmart spring valley brand with an eye on it, they're not like a special brand or anything
@@kate39826
Thank you!👍🏻
I hope omega3 helps me too...I'm so tired of this!🤷🏻♀️🙄
@@jaytee2642did it help you?
Thank you! This is very helpful and informative. I especially like the you are able to educate in terms that are easy to understand by the average person. My problem is the D3 is cost prohibitive for me and I am worried about the fish taste of the Nordic. I know me! If I taste that, I will not take it and can't afford to waste the money spent. But thanks to you I know what to look for in a third alternative.
You are very informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
These capsules look so gigantic and I have often choked on large capsules, so I guess I will have to go for the liquid form
I too had this dilemma. And then an amazingly simple solution occurred to me. Why not just eat Cod livers. You can find them easily online and at big box grocery retailers. They taste great, a lot like tuna fish. You can eat them by themselves or substitute them in any recipe using tuna fish. I prefer mine in a leafy green salad. Easy-peasy.
As well with sardines, anchovies, salmon and fish roe
I wasn’t really that much into iHealth, but your videos are so helpful so I am subscribing
Thank you for mentioning the vegan options! Even before being vegan, the fish oil supplements would make me burp up a fishy taste. When I use the algae oil pills no fishy taste, no burping lol
Which ones do you use?
How the fish is stored and processed is very important. Like he said, only a few companies produce most of the fish oil… If I have to get something cheap I usually look for coldpressed and then I’ll keep them in a cool place or in the fridge.
Thank-you so much for your research and recommendations, doctor. I am a fan!
Thank you for the information. For the last 5 years I tried many types. The last 3-month trial was "Advanced Omega Antarctic Krill 500". They were a bust and I am going back to PRN for a couple of months to get back on track. I have a spreadsheet of all the ones I tried that breaks down cost per day etc. The PRN and Nordic Ultima are my top 2 also. They are not the most expensive on my spreadsheet. Your research helps a lot. Thanks again.
How did the Krill oil work out? I have read a little on that.
@@DoctorEyeHealth The Krill had 67mg EPA, 30MG DHA, 240mg phospholipids, 125mg Omega 3 and 100mcg esterified astaxanthin per tab. I found about 3 weeks after changing to the krill from my PRN that I felt a difference. By the late evening my eyes were showing signs of the dry burning. I had to use more drops. I stuck it out for the entire bottle but will not try it again. Another note, I ordered the Seal Oil but after trying it a few days I found, even though it was ethically obtained I just couldn't take it. We have seals on the shore here and I just couldn't look at them the same.
@@Dove96 Krill are also way over harvested :/ They are literally food for the whole ocean. I stopped krill for ethical reasons. There is a lot of propaganda that they are abundant when that is not the case anymore
@@kae2678 It is also my last bottle of krill. Thank you.
Hi @Dove96 @DoctorEyeHealth, I am using Nordic Island pills which are available at the Redmond Eye clinic. Do we have any Name of the Capsules with similar EPA and DPA In PRN or Nordic where doctor can write a prescription to my Optum online Pharmacy so that i can use my Insurance for it.
Will be waiting for the reply.
Thanks,

Thank God I stumbled on this video. My eye doctor didn't even recommend omega 3 rather I was asked to use eyes drop which I didn't continuously for 8months which never helped but the day I came across this video. I bought omega 3 and within 3 days of using omega 3. My dry eyes are finally watery ❤❤

Thank you for this video. I have noticed a difference with omega supplements. I’ve had a hard time finding a good quality option with the correct ratio that is either shellfish free or certified kosher. These are real needs to be met!
Great information! 🎉😊
Thank you for this information. I am interested in what the results were from your omega 3 blood tests and your own dry eye symptoms after using the supplements if you could share that.
Thank you Doc! I really appreciate your channel. You have helped me in many ways! 🙋♀️💕
Such a great video, first time i got to understand that fish oil is different from omega 3
I take the Focus Plus, and I am pretty sure it is working, I happened to have taken blood test before and after (not intentionally to test these tablets), but for my Cholesterol levels, and noticed that my cholesterol levels was improved. But I must add that I also take , Carlson vi Vit D with k and omega, and eat Salmon at least 1x per week. Oh, I only take 2 not 3 of the Focus plus tablets. So having a good cholesterol level and dry eye relieve makes the cost more acceptable .
Thank you Doctor for the information you provide. Vision is the most most important! I trust you .
Thank you SO Much!!! 💙🙏
No problem 😊
Awesome research, Doc, thanks!
Happy to help! Thanks, Teri.
I have dry eye.
Thank you for your expertise.
Thanks for another amazing and useful video. Could you also discuss that if you eat two servings of real fish a week that is usually enough and no need for yet another expensive supplement. Also, given the cost can you discuss how much the eyes can actually improve specifically the dry eye problem when taking omega 3's versus the cost?
DE3 changed my life
I bought this brand in the video without reading amazon comments. Turns out people were feeling weird after taking the pills and some bottles had all the pills stuck together and other problems with the product itself. I decided to just try one pill at first to see if I got a weird reaction and after a few hours of taking it my skin started to break out. This is the second time I ever try to take supplements or vitamins, the last time it was a B complex pill. Both times my skin breaks out really bad with these products so I can´t continue. I would recommend anyone trying this to be aware of this possibility.
Very valuable content in your videos, Many Thanks Dr.
Thank you!! Really appreciate that. 🙏🙏

Hey thanks for sharing, Demi. Waking up in the morning with dryness or pain is no joke. Some people do get pain, first thing in the morning do to dryness but some people also have a condition called recurrent corneal erosion. Where the eyelid sort of peels a small part of the corneal tissue when the eye opens, have you had it checked out by a local doctor? That would be the best next step, just to get a proper diagnosis and guide for treatment.

Thanks, this video was awesome!
Thank you so much. I was looking for exact video
Hi Doctor, my dry eye specialist recommends Visual Advantage Tear Support Plus. It has 2668 Omega 3 TG per dose (4 very large gel pills), an EPA to DHA ratio that exceeds 3:1, and a nominal amount of Omega 7 of 150 mg. Also, it doesn't have a fishy smell. CB
Great video, loved it. I have been taking omega 3 for years due to high cholesterol but didn't really understand or pay attention to content, would often just go for the cheapest option. Don't know if it's possible be would be good to see if you could do a deep dive into vegan options?
Thank you, definitely the best advice.
Hi Doc ..Just wanted to say that actually Viva Naturals triple strength is much better than your highest rated brand when compared to three capsules. Two caps of Viva Naturals is almost as good as three in your highest rated brand.
Thanks for this dude. I was thinking of buying the DE3 brand, however, price point was an issue for me. Therefore, I went for the Viva brand which I think is more affordable. I checked reviews of Viva and its nutrient profile, it seems at par with its pricey counterpart.
Thank you so much for this info. It seems to be a very good product with reasonable price. 😊
This is the one I ordered.
Thank you so much for this!

You should look into green pasture fermented cod liver oil .
Also vitamin a very important.
I started taking a good Wild Alaskan Salmon and Cod liver Omega 3 supplement just 4 days ago after seeing vids on how Cod Liver Oil relieves dry eyes. It seems to be helping already. Great reduction in the extreme discomfort and blurriness.
It couldn’t possibly work that quickly could it?
I previously took a cheaper Omega 3 supplement for months just for general health and I know it did nothing to relieve my dry eyes. I understand the efficacy is much greater with good fish oil supplements, but I can’r believe my eyes (pardon the pun.)
will try it.thanks for info
Thank you Doctor!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Necessary questions before I would start taking omega 3: 1.What is a good omega 3 level in the blood?
2. What is my omega 3 level in the blood? (Perform a blood test). Maybe my level is already good.
Anyway, until I had answers to these questions, I wouldn't take omega 3 (much helps much?), cross my fingers and hope for the best. That doesn't seem like the smartest way to go.
Very happy you brought this up. I plan to address it in an upcoming video going over my persona experience where I took blood tests before starting any supplements, then again after 3 months of taking PRN. Along with tracking my symptoms and gland health. I will be sure to review blood levels in the video for you. Thanks.

Hello, So far I tried different brands available in France, the specific dry eyes problem if difficult to understand as the specialist doctor said to me that my eyes were dry but I don't feel it. I take Omega-3s in two forms, one for the eyes and one general. I wish to switch to cod liver oil, looking for research about that. What I felt from starting Omega-3s in general is a HUGE improvement in : MEMORY, mood stability, and also deep core happiness. At work this gives much better resistance to disturbances, the getting back to tasks is much improved. A NOTE ON THE VIDEO : the fish oils contains naturally Vitamins A, D, E, and the vitamins A and E are those that we should not overdose on (so it is better when the label gives the information, when the label says nothing the vitamins are there anyway but you don't know how much). As far as I know it is not clear cut if the benefit are coming from the EPA or the DHA and it is also possible that the benefit come from OTHER substances present in the fish oil. Overall since I do Omega-3s I am calm, fast, focused, I know better who I am and listen better to others. Life is much better.
Which brand do you use?
@@DeusHex I change as often as possible I never stick to one brand, and I don't take any each day where I eat fish. Usually I mix one that is just fish oil with one that is enriched in EPA or DHA. Which brand worked best for you for depression

I hadn’t remembered ever purposely eating them, although I am guessing that I might have had them in tapas while in Spain. I just bought a can last week - they sell them skinless and boneless and you can eat them in place of tuna fish.
Hello. Thank you so much for this video. My dry eye specialist recommended Hydroeye with black currant seed oil. Can you please tell me your thoughts on this supplement. Btw, it really hasn’t helped my dry eyes. Thank you so much. I’ll try to attach photos.
This sounds interesting. Have you used it for very long?
@@rosiet253 It's been about 7 months. it's $30/month at my eye doc office.
@@indygrammy thanks for getting back to me!!
best vegan omega 3 supplement brands
The only 2 I really investigated were the Nordic Natural and PRN vegan options. have you found any others?
@@DoctorEyeHealth I would love to know more about the efficacy of vegan options, especially since they seem to have the opposite ratio of EPA to DHA. I'm also curious to know more about DPA, and the Freshfield Vegan Omega 3 brand. Thanks for your science-based content - incredibly informative and helpful!
