    Someone who is too stupid to get a license, or simply doesn't feel like doing so. Does not belong on the Ham frequencies.
    The same goes for your driver's license.
    Ham is meant for experiments if you're not interested in that go to the CB frequencies.

      hmmmm....A kenwood Ts-990 cost around 7500 bucks. Tuning around the ham bands, the vast majority of what i am hearing is what boils down to... a radio check and a few radio nets. There is some real experimenting going on for ya. A radio check is sounding much more economical on a cb radio. LOL

      I have my general ticket. About 0.0001% of amateur stations experiment. If anything is going to kill ham radio it’s this nonsense that “the only way to enjoy it is XYZ”
      Don’t swear or talk politics, and don’t use it for business. Other than that knock yourself out.
      Honestly it’s time to allow actual bonafide encryption on some bands too.
      Or we can just pretend that the legions of men in their 80’s are learning something new about propagation that we didn’t already know.

    I was thinking about using my uv-5r to talk on gmrs, but as soon as I turned it on, the FCC Tactical Response Team came through my doors & windows, drug me out of my home, then proceeded to use a thermal nuclear device to destroy my radio. I was then taken to their facility at Guantanamo Bay for questioning.
    I would post a link, buy every time I try, the FCC removes it.

  • @Randy-xs4wm

    Well here's the problem. The FCC expects us all to be "SELF-POLICING." But I think that people misunderstand what that means. "SELF-POLICING" means what it says... It means "police yourself." One more time: SELF-POLICING doesn't mean OTHERS-POLICING. Nay, it means "SELF-POLICING." Somehow there is a contingent of folks who clearly confuse "self" with "others," evidencing a level of psychosis that a mere radio can't heal.

    The fcc doesn't have the manpower to triangulate you for not having a license. Years ago we had a cb radio with a 3000 watt kicker. We lived next to a navy base and fcc got called, they showed up weeks later when the kicker was off and couldn't do a damn thing. They have to actually catch you breaking the law and like you said I really don't think they care that much.

    • @totallyfrozen
      @totallyfrozen Год назад +8

      HAM radio operators think more highly of their hobby than they ought. I spend nearly a decade as a radio DJ working both AM and FM stations. The FCC is preoccupied with commercial endeavors. They are focused on policing TV, radio, aviation, commercial dispatches, emergency services, etc. They have next to no concern for hobbiests playing on FRS, CB, and HAM. I know we all want to fancy ourselves important. During hurricane Harvey, my father in law and I got small boats and were dispatched by the local fire department to help rescue stranded senior citizens. Before we could even get to the location, FEMA road in on military vehicles and effected the rescue. All your government needs from you is your money. They don’t care what you do with your hobbies. FEMA rolled in on 5 ton trucks and didn’t even notice our presence. We were insignificant to them.

    • @dx1450
      @dx1450 Год назад +2

      @@totallyfrozen The FCC likes to concentrate on fines for commercial broadcasters because that's where the money is. They can and do issue NAL's to hams & CB'ers for like $10,000 but they're not as likely to get that amount from a hobbyist as they are from a commercial broadcaster which the FCC can suspend their license if they don't pay.

    My favorite sad ham activity is the rule guy that scolds folks for not using their call signs on a net yet blasts the repeater at 100W. (The rules state to use only enough power to get the job done) I reach the repeater w/ 5W and rule guy barges in frequently without checking if the frequency is in use and drowns out whoever is on at the time. Don’t be rule guy.

      in my area, i got onto several nets using my soon to be legal name of Shadow and was advised by one ham that ham operators dont like people using “cb handles” on ham and i explained it wasnt a handle. but this same person who runs one of the local net allows one of the operators to key up and talk over people who are already talking. his power is more than enough and he knows that he over powers people when he keys up, but doesnt care, and nothing is said to him, yet im told other hams may not talk to me because they think im using a cb handle.
      so yeah breaking the rules only apply to certain hams.

    I was testing antennas the other night and a couple of nice fellows broke in and very cordially offered to assist. After receiving the proffered help, one said, “By the way, I didn't get your call sign.”
    “I actually don't have one,” I said, telling them I had contracted the local amateur radio club to start the laborious process to get one.
    Wow. I could have made up my own call sign or borrowed someone else’s, but I'm basically an honest fellow. They both responded viscerally as though I'd been uncovered hatching a plot to overthrow the government. I couldn't blame those young fellers. They were only reacting as they had been programmed to. They informed me in a solumn manner that I really shouldn't be transmitting on that frequency because the FCC could track me down and fine me. Their words.
    I didn't want to argue with them because, really, they were right. The FCC could have, but as you said, they've got other fish to fry. They both remained very pleasant, but it was clear that woah! They were expecting me to get hard time once the FCC officers, certainly now poised outside my door, burst in!
    The FCC weren't behind my door. I know because I opened it and only my cat walked in. I have every intention of getting my ham license because no one will talk to you if you don't. And no one here is on GMRS! Besides, if I have a ham license, I can talk to people on GMRS. But not vice versa. Yeah, I know. Each needs a license. If I use a _GMRS call sign_ on ham, I'll be caught almost immediately, though. But if I use a _ham call sign_ on GMRS, no one will give a shit!
    It all has to do with knowing your audience!
    ..

    The issue with is that the FCC does not have the resources to keep up with the rule violations. Not too long ago the FCC closed down several field offices. One of which was here in Seattle. I agree with you that is not excuse to violate the rules. There's two ham repeaters in the Los Angeles area that have been violating the rules for years where nothing happens to them and they just continue on and on. Part 97 of the FCC rules and regulations prohibit the use of bad language and broadcasting music. The frequencies are 147.435 and 147.450 which can be streamed on the internet

    There's a very old lady named Ruth who comes over my local repeater sometimes, "What was that? Did somebody say something? I can't stay I'm on the phone I have to go." spoken at a snail's pace in an ancient wobbling tone. Imagine the FCC (or similar governing body) breaking down her door because she doesn't identify her station to the other 168 seniors on the system. The only problem with this mentality that the FCC can't do anything, nobody cares etc, is that you get random people on the internet acting like total assholes to noobs simply because they asked a question about regulations, so it goes both ways. I guess if everyone just remembered not to be stuck-up losers from the beginning there wouldn't really be any need for this conversation at all... Just use your common sense and don't be a jerk

Not a chance in hell! I also can't remember ever buying a used Ham radio that didn't already have 11 meters (C.B.) in it, along with 10 meter and the puny 12 meter band. So if having a Ham ticket is all the rage, what do the Ham's need with 11 meter?....... Just slumming I gather.

    Just reading through the comments and I'm amazed at the support for lack of civil obedience and respect for others. It seems so many hate hams for following rules. They make themselves feel important by violating the rules and calling names to anyone who suggests they should follow the rules. The 100 year tradition in the amateur community has always been to follow the rules and that's not based on love of government or of rules, it is based on love of respect for others, for recognizing that, and history has proven it true, with more people on radios, across all services, every year, the way that radio can continue to work is respect for others and for their rights to use their radios within the rules and for you to use your radios within the rules. The only reason anything in my post would bother anyone, and I'm sure they will be deleted on this channel, is if those people are planning on violating the rules - rules that have the single purpose of establishing means of allowing us all to have reasonable access to the radio spectrum.
    Follow the rules of civil society, and GMRS or FRS operators will only ever hear from hams about getting into the amateur hobby. Is that too much to ask? Well, apparently in 2024 society, it is.
