  • Just a quick snippet catching a few Yeallowfish in the Orange River near Hopetown in South Africa. Was busy testing another rod this weekend, but couldn't resist using my trusty Kingdom King Pro 602UL and Acura HICC-50 as well. Had Horrific weather, but still managed to land a few.

Where do you find a good spot and what lures works the best for you

For targeting Yellowfish specifically, my favourite lure is the locally available Sensation Ghillemientjie, specifically in “dikkop” colour scheme. This is by far my most productive lure in the Orange River. I strongly suggest changing out the hooks and split rings on it though. I have bent out too many of them. I suggest adding a single #8 treble in the back, which also changes the buoyancy from slow sink to slow rise, or a set of #6 VMC Mangrove singles which keeps it as a slow sinking lure. I used singles in the video. Salmon’s Hornets from 2cm through to 4cm are also a favourite of many South African anglers.
Regarding where, I usually target rocky areas near the head of a bend (fewer but larger fish), or the shallow sections near the tail of a bend (more but smaller fish). You will likely get hit most when your lure moves through the visible transitions between faster, more turbulent water, and slower water with possible eddy currents. Fish hang near these transitions waiting for food.
