Thanks to Eric over at "I Do Cars" for making the original video and saying I could make a video about his. His excellent channel and original video is here: ruclips.net/video/vE1Ls9LPlJg/видео.html
Nice addition to I do cars! Pair up for a fun video. He does not know heavy, and is a comical guy, but I do believe he has skill for tear downs and if he wants, will pay more attention to an engine that is worth salvaging. Will watch your videos also. PS: Agree Eric uses breaker bar in less then best practices. Especially when pulling down on #1 cylinder against engine stand, but we all learn and also like learning and video are a great transfer of good information. Keep posting!
He has a good channel but I have a very good friend that works for cat he is the only one I let work my truck engines he is very knowledgeable as are you.thanks for the video..
I religiously watch your videos and Eric's videos when they come out, time permitting. You are very educational and I enjoy your content. Eric's are quite humorous in his own special way, and his videos focus on catastrophic failures and total engine carnage - diagnosis. 2 great channels. Thanks for all that you do.
Thanks for Eric's step by step teardown, and the "Cat" mechanic's commentary . I knew there was a 3116 and 3126, but thought the main difference was the fuel system . And now have a better appreciation of the 3126 .
As the owner of an RV with a 3126 in it, this was interesting. I think the narrative you are giving during his teardown has answered a lot of questions that I've had about my engine and the layout of it. Still not something that I'd want to do myself!!
I love Eric's videos. He's very entertaining and I love seeing the carnage. It's very interesting to hear your expert info while he works through this teardown. New subscriber here 👍
Nice to get a pat on the back from another mechanic, you deserve it. I’ve rebuilt a few diesel engines and I’m an electrician not a mechanic. A 4 cylinder Ford, 270 Cummins and a Cummins in my W18 case loader. The 270 Cummins had 2.4 million km on it. The valve train was warn so bad that the head of the valve went inside the hole in the head and the keepers fell out. I found it with the valve stem driven through the head of the piston. Yes if I could find my pictures of it it would be a good destruction of the week. Thanks for sharing.
I like Eric's tear downs, he has some amazing engine destruction videos. Myself being an auto engine builder have dabbled in a couple diesel builds recently with a Cummins 12v and currently building a Mitsubishi 4M40. I would consider both 'light duty' compared to the world of Cat engines. Anyways glad to see both worlds collide in these 2 videos as I enjoy both channels and find you both to be entertaining and interesting to watch. Cheers!
I watched both all three of these videos and I must say that the both of yous have furthered my interest and understanding. I don’t know when or if y’all will see this but I am glad I did and I thank the both of you ❤
Love your videos. My late father spent a combined 50 years with Ohio Cat & Alban Cat before eventually retiring from Mustang Cat. He hated fooling around with automotive engines. He’d say “Too small & no room to work. Give me a 3608 any day!”
Good stuff!! It’s gotta be fun watchin someone that’s inexperienced in your field, tearing apart a CAT diesel. You were a great sport and didn’t kill Eric when there was multiple times you could’ve. “Cummins-Esque” lol I loved it!!
I am a HUGE fan of Eric’s channel. I have watched a few of your videos but after watching this one, you gained a new subscriber. Your obvious expertise coupled with your respectful commentary on Eric’s video was refreshing. Now I have 3 different types of engine experts to watch. If you like race engines, make sure to add Steve Morris to your watch list.
I like and sub both channel's for different reason's. I'm well versed in teardown and builds with automotive stuff, but I find Eric funny and sarcastic. You are the man's, man in diesel tech.
When I watch most of Eric’s videos the unnecessary complication and use of aluminum in modern car engines frankly scares the heck out of me. This cat looks to be built right, nice and heavy. That camshaft bearing surfaces were awesome. This was refreshing.
Hey I love what you did here Josh. Really enjoyed this type of video and appreciate everything you do..Learning everything about CATS just by watching your videos. Thank you
With all due respect to Josh and Eric this was a very entertaining video and funny. As I watched Eric’s originals in the back of my head I was thinking “I wonder what Josh would say about that”, and here it is. Every grin on Josh’s face as Eric did something sketchy or had to learn the hard way what Eric lives with everyday was priceless. It is like every time we get a rookie fire fighter and he tries to brute force something. We laugh, watch them struggle for a while, then give them the right tool so they can work smarter not harder. Great videos from both of you. I’d love to see another!
I have been watching Erics videos for around a year or so and it is always a learning experience as to the pros and cons of various engines. This lil puppy though I enjoyed alot and hearing your commentary on aspects of the teardown and things to do and not to do is great to see. Knowledge is king...thanks for the great video:-)
It is a great feeling to see a highly respected mechanic talk about how frustrating some of these mounting bolts can be to access and remove. Every now and then I'll find myself extremely pissed off at a design and think "I wonder if the folks at the dealership get this angry?". Thanks for the videos Josh.
On the Navistar / Powerstroke engines, when the copper washer fails at the bottom of the injector, or the injector cup fails -- the bottom of the injector scars just like that #4 did. It will also take out the fuel injector o-ring if it runs long enough that way because of combustion gases getting in. Just went through a 7.3 that had the exact same situation. The crush-washer didn't seat properly.
Having watched Eric's video first I was wondering, having been mentioned personally if you were going to have any input. Im very glad you did. I obviously also frequent your channel and enjoy your content and the fact that you ...added commentary... where needed to his video was awesome. Thanks for spending the time to do so, and thanks for all you do.
Nice mustache anyone that says anything is jealous they cannot grow one. Fun video to watch, never heard of his channel. As always thanks for the education and also for bringing up the safety issues, not slamming him but anytime a tech can stop an injury is great. Be safe Josh.
Very good video and commentary. Just started watching your channel, of course Eric's suggestion. I really enjoy both channels and the humor Eric puts into it makes it cooler to watch. Like I said, I just started watching your channel and really enjoy it. As a thirty year truck driver, Cat has always been my go to engine. Very few problems. Just over all a great engine. Thanks for this video, it was fun to watch again and I learned a lot from your commentary. Waiting for more from your channel, although I have a lot of older ones to watch. Have a great day.
I watch both channels and it’s interesting to see both the teardown by someone who is normally working on gas cars and a reaction by a fellow diesel mechanic
Yep, without a doubt, Josh is a kick-ass CAT diesel mechanic, and there is always a lot of good information I learn from his video's. I hope one day to arrange with him in an assistant capacity, doing a troubleshoot / repair video.
I have a 3126 in my 2001 Bluebird All American Bus conversion. It’s an FE. All the general maintenance is pretty accessible from the doghouse and underneath but I’m guessing you’d have to take the front off and jack it up to remove the engine for any serious rebuild work. Thanks for the videos. Really helps me to understand my equipment!
They do make brackets to mount diesel inline sixes on a normal engine stand sideways... The bracket, I think, uses the motor mount location to bolt it on sideways... That fixes the length issue... But he did say in the video that his stand was rated for 1500lbs and it seemed to do just fine mounted lengthwise... Thanks for sharing and keep up your awesomeness...
I just had a head gasket replaced on my isx and asked the shop to call me once they got the cam exposed and for 877,000 miles and being the first time any internal part of the motor has seen daylight except for a valve adjustment my cam looked just as good if not better than that cam it looked brand new even the tech couldn't believe it and it's thanks to you Mr. Ape and other channels that helped me understand a motor better to better take care of it
Big smiles all through video watching 2 of my favorite presenters. Great job. Josh, I realize you are professionally required to like Cats and dislike the red engines. But hey, Cummins really aren’t that bad !! :-) Keep up the good work.
I really enjoy watching your channel and learning and listening to your knowledge about CAT engines you can tell that you really know your job very well and that your have a lot of knowledge and experience I love learning and I would say your the best at your job keep the videos coming..
Thanks so much for your content in your videos, I've learned allot from you! It's funny to watch people talking about how heavy components are on automotive engines once you've replaced a head on a B or C model cat!😅
Just goes to show watching a professional work especially when they give comments on the repair they are doing you can learn some things may not be the same as going to school on a specific engine but enough to give insight ! Josh at Adept is one I like to watch also not that I own any CAT motors but I do have a diesel pickup 02 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 Cummins so I find watching Josh interesting ! Thanks for the videos Josh !
Thank you for another awesome video! I truly and regularly watch both of the channels and was hoping I would be able to see a "critique" video on the tear down when I began watching the original video and chuckling at the mental cringe when he referred to something comparing with Cummins. I would thoroughly enjoy watching the two of you teardown a c15 or something akin to it... nit just for the teardown but the repair with the two of you. I know VERY unlikely to happen, but I think it would be very interesting... and may actually make decent content as well.🙏💜
I dont know a whole lot about engines or diesels like this for that matter but I really am appreciating the way this engine was designed. Looks like it was built for work and to be worked on. The same can't be said about a lot of car engines out there. Also the general lack of wear on some of these parts is beautiful
I enjoy your vids as well as Erics. I'm retired but I have worked on a lot of older Cat engines and transmissions from loaders and dozers and a few oddballs occasionally but that was back in the 80's. The biggest horror story was a 555 240 cummins that a machine shop destroyed the block by grinding the main caps and align honing the main bores?!? That alone raised the crank enough to case crack the gears and you could not install the side bolts for the mains! It took 3 months to get a new block from England and I had to build it from there. The book shows oversize OD as well as undersize bearings for the mains. I think they took the shop to court to pay for all the parts which was a shame but any mach shop should know that you do not cut the caps on a t-bolt engine with gear drive in the front. I figured that out a long time ago and the parts catalogue confirmed it.
I haven't watched your videos in a few months. I just have to say this: Be yourself. I think a waxed mustache is cool as fuck and manly. Bad asses over the years, who could pull it off, were always respected. You are an experienced and knowledgeable content provider, and we appreciate the gift you give and will never judge you by your cool facial hair. Even though most of us are secretly jealous. Lol We appreciate you, thanks for years of super-helpful videos.
Erick's I do car, is very entraining, he is at same time funny and serious alerting his viewers to proper mantein theirs gasoline cars. And also watch Adept Ape videos, with a more technical approach on diesel engines. It's wonderful to see an interaction on those two. The next step is you to fix/disassemble a gasoline engine and hear Erick funny comments!!
it kinda pains me to watch him figure it out lol, especially when he sprayed that PB on the bolts then took them out right after lol! it is nice to see people trying new things!
It took me by surprise myself when I I took apart my first 15 liter (cummins x15 fyi) just how massive these parts are compared to even light duty diesel. Also the 2 piece piston thing is definitely not used in any light diesel I've ever had apart. Surprised actually that the x15 I'm working on uses an all steel piston. Where as the 8.9 liter cummins I did before this was the 2 piece. cool stuff to work on though. Sick mustache BTW!
So glad I watched this. I was just about to buy a motorhome with one of these engines in it. No way will I ever own anything with heui injectors again!
It is funny when you used to working on heavy equipment and then you work on a car. I rebuilt my daughter’s Mini Cooper engine a couple years ago and between the Valvetronic on the intake and Vanos on intake and exhaust I have never seen so many bits and bops in a cylinder head.
What kind of jump box does your shop use? And could you do a review or recommendation video? Also have you ever made your own heavy duty jumper cables out of welding cable? As always my favorite RUclips channel. Keep up the amazing content.
Thanks to Eric over at "I Do Cars" for making the original video and saying I could make a video about his. His excellent channel and original video is here: ruclips.net/video/vE1Ls9LPlJg/видео.html
New RUclips rivalry over destruction of the week confirmed. ;)
This is awesome! Eric is a good friend of mine, great guy and it’s cool to see a couple of my favorite channels doing content together in any way.
I really like Eric @ I do car's.
Nice addition to I do cars! Pair up for a fun video. He does not know heavy, and is a comical guy, but I do believe he has skill for tear downs and if he wants, will pay more attention to an engine that is worth salvaging.

Every time they post I’m instantly watching! Genuinely my 2 favorite channels
Awesome to see two of my favorite channels combined into one hilarious viewing experience!
"hilarious"?
I watch Eric’s channel a lot, I love that guy! This video is great😂
Thanks for Eric's step by step teardown, and the "Cat" mechanic's commentary . I knew there was a 3116 and 3126, but thought the main difference was the fuel system . And now have a better appreciation of the 3126 .
Very well done critique on the tear down and the design of that CAT engine Josh. Had to watch this one through.
As the owner of an RV with a 3126 in it, this was interesting. I think the narrative you are giving during his teardown has answered a lot of questions that I've had about my engine and the layout of it. Still not something that I'd want to do myself!!
3126 Cat is a good performer, like most Cats..
If you have/get a blown up C15 you should send it over to Eric so he can see what a "real" piston/rod/crankshaft/camshaft looks like!
Someone in the commercial maritime business should send Eric a MAN 32/40 or Wartsila 32.
I love Eric's videos. He's very entertaining and I love seeing the carnage.
It's very interesting to hear your expert info while he works through this teardown.

The Cummins comment made me laugh out loud 😂. “How could you Eric…?” Awesome reaction video buddy. Greetings from 🇩🇰
That goat sure screams when it hears the word Cummins.

Fun fact about that, the Mitsubishi 4M40 is used in some Cat compact machines, like older 308 mini excavators.
I watched both all three of these videos and I must say that the both of yous have furthered my interest and understanding. I don’t know when or if y’all will see this but I am glad I did and I thank the both of you ❤

The crossover we all needed
What a pleasure listening to two guys who are knowledgeable and honest. A rare combination these days. Thank you.
Good stuff!! It’s gotta be fun watchin someone that’s inexperienced in your field, tearing apart a CAT diesel. You were a great sport and didn’t kill Eric when there was multiple times you could’ve. “Cummins-Esque” lol I loved it!!

Eric's channel is fun to watch. Something satisfying about watching a wrecked engine being dismantled.
This is fun and educational. Thank you both for your videos!
I found your channel through his, so it's been a nice cross over. You both put out great content.
Watching Adam Sandler oops Eric taking engines apart. What could be better?
It is a great feeling to see a highly respected mechanic talk about how frustrating some of these mounting bolts can be to access and remove. Every now and then I'll find myself extremely pissed off at a design and think "I wonder if the folks at the dealership get this angry?". Thanks for the videos Josh.

Now I wanna see “You” work on a ISX Cummins… wait till you dig in to one of those. 😂
i love the auto and heavy duty repair side of youtube, such fun place to be with amusing and very smart people all around!
Nice mustache anyone that says anything is jealous they cannot grow one. Fun video to watch, never heard of his channel. As always thanks for the education and also for bringing up the safety issues, not slamming him but anytime a tech can stop an injury is great. Be safe Josh.
Love to see people get together and help each other and offer half advice with no hatred or bashing. Great video

That was great. Love these crossover/reaction videos. More, please.
I love watching Eric’s videos. I watch him every Saturday religiously
Two of my favorite channels!
Watching him tear down cummins engines as a cummins tech. I know your frustration 😂
At 21:17 sounds like Sasquatch trying to fine a mate on the background.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Two guys I watch every chance i get on lunch. Great work guys!
I love this format, good to know your thoughts on other's people work. Thanks Josh.
Wow Adam Sandler is tearing engines down now 😂
Yep, without a doubt, Josh is a kick-ass CAT diesel mechanic, and there is always a lot of good information I learn from his video's. I hope one day to arrange with him in an assistant capacity, doing a troubleshoot / repair video.
Haha, I was watching this and thought he should contact you for more information and then he mentioned you at the end....awesome!
New subscriber here, via Eric and I Do Cars. You both make great videos, satisfying to watch!!
This was a well done response video thank you!
First time here. VERY informative! I know nothing about diesel and you explain a lot of things well here.
Hey thanks.
Very cool. And i agree Josh.your videos are excellent and ive learned alot from watching them .Thanks
Didn't expect channels I been watching for 3 months so far to collab like this.
I may have caught some of your videos while scanning the band. I really enjoy watching😅. New to the channel.
Watching both of you on this was super cool. Everybody always says when it comes to Diesels Josh is the master.
This is the best thing I never thought I'd see😂 it was awesome watching him play around with that lil baby
They do make brackets to mount diesel inline sixes on a normal engine stand sideways... The bracket, I think, uses the motor mount location to bolt it on sideways... That fixes the length issue... Nothing like listening to a professional, I am subscribed to both channels!
This channel is better than ever. That moustache tho
Ape and other channels that helped me understand a motor better to better take care of it
I really like Eric's I do cars channel. Stumbled across it one day and I've been hooked ever sense..
Big smiles all through video watching 2 of my favorite presenters. Great job.
Josh, I realize you are professionally required to like Cats and dislike the red engines. But hey, Cummins really aren’t that bad !! :-)

I am subbed to both your channels and i enjoy the content, and eric is fun to watch
Josh) CUMMINZESQUE...😮 ?!!! Joe) phhhHAH....coffee almost out of my nose. 🤣 hahaha
I love the meme with the screaming sheep " not like a cummins" . I think that would make a great car horn.
😂😂😂😂😂 true
I appreciate all you videos I've watched every single one and still refer back to them, thanks Josh, do you ever see a 3408 anymore?
I saw one in a piece of equipment a few months ago, but don't remember the model of equipment. Haven't seen one in a truck in person in many years.
If you ever run across one in the shop again would you make a video
I think KT3406 had a 3408 in one of his older videos.
@@josephmichuda6447 those eniges where 3508s, the next size up

It was fun, watching Eric in over his head. Great channels.

Lol my comment is from the very beginning before you mentioned the paint I thought it was pissing oil every where and had a newer turbo 😂😂
