    That scene where Maleficent wakes up to realize her wings have been taken is so impactful. It mirrors what waking up to being drugged and taken advantage of, and the feeling of knowing something has been taken from you that you can never have back. I was so emotional during that scene. Those who have been through will likely have been touched by this scene. That scene and Angelina’s acting are just amazing, the movie overall is great!

    Little fact about her discovering the wings are gone: Angelina Jolie said the scene was one giant metaphor for being violated. The drugging, the pain, realizing what happened, it's all right there.
    P.S. I'm only wording it as such to get past the censors.

    Here's some interesting research I found on the actual story:
    Apparently the spinning wheel is a metaphor for growing up.
    The Curse was essentially Maleficent saying, "She will be given the chance to grow up."
    By burning them, the king was saying, "She will NEVER grow up!"

    You are correct Nick. At this 'time' in our history, a male heir was celebrated. That's why King Henry VIII divorced & beheaded wives until he got a living, male heir. But that child did not live into adulthood either.

    • @emmaconnolly5738
      @emmaconnolly5738 9 месяцев назад +2

      @niyaodom1944 Because back then, women were literally property. They didn't believe a queen could rule by herself, and the moment she married, the crown and the power would go to her husband. They also still believed a woman was responsible for the sex of the child. Ironically, Henry produced one of the strongest and most successful monarchs we've ever had. His daughter, Elizabeth 1. And she never married because she had no intention of sharing or reliquishing her power to a man. She was known as the virgin queen, and her reign was known as the 'golden' years.

    My take is that he was he was also 'cursed'. You can't steal the wings of a magical creature without there being serious consequences. And when Maleficient cursed his child, it basically opened the floodgates of his own damnation. Remember up until then he wasn't irredeemably evil. He hadn't attempted to kill Maleficient when he stole her wings, and he did kneel, beg and humble himself trying to save his child (no small humiliation for a king in front of a castle full of his subjects). It was only after all this did he descend completely into the depths of madness and pure hatred. No sympathy for him, but after he stole Maleficent's wings he never stood a chance.

    I think you're both right in a way, King Stefan definitely didn't feel guilty when he was celebrating his daughters' birth and would have been happy continuing his entire life never taking any accountability for what he did, until Maleficent showed up. But he viewed his daughter more like a possession and his pride was hurt when she bested him in front of the entire kingdom. So you're right he never really cared for Aurora. Great reaction

  • @TheMaskedChef7

    Maleficent is probably my favorite Disney character because of her ability and understanding of both her darkness of light, in a way she is more human than humans because she fully recognizes both sides and properly uses her powers .. when humans ignore their own human shadow they always lose because how can you use your power for the good if you don’t understand the darkness laying within it. Imagine holding a small bird in your hands that fell of a tree your first thought will be this bird is so small i could crush it easily if you don’t realize this shadow thought is somewhere in your head you might actually go ahead and crush it instead of help it. That’s the point of a human shadow you need to recognize your every thought has an opposite thought residing in the subconscious it’s the only way we can make the right call. She was capable of both light and darkness and once she recognized that full potential she used it the way it should be used.
    Brilliant reaction truly epic you guys. Happy new years. Praying this year holds peace and love for ya all. ❤

    I think people should really look at these retellings of older movies as just alternative stories in the same setting instead of connecting them too much together or having to pick one as the "real story". I grew up with the animated Sleeping Beauty and still really like it but I also enjoyed Maleficent as a separate story cause that's what it is. I don't have to compare them to each other or choose one scenario over the other. I like this movie but it is a completely different story than the original and that's okay, I like them both for different reasons. This one is mainly great bc of Angelina Jolie doing such amazing job portraying this character and the beginning is the strongest point of the movie to me.

  • @brandiarmstrong2902
    @brandiarmstrong2902 9 месяцев назад

    Actually, the fairies became complete Dingbats in this film since in the OG, Maleficent didn't soften the curse one bit. She fully intended Aurora to outright *die* from the curse. It was actually the third fairy who allowed for Aurora to potentially survive. In this version, the "three good fairies" need to thank God that CPS didn't exist.
    "Clap these three in irons, boys. Gross neglect and child endangerment, resulting in the death of their charge, within a week of her being entrusted into their care!"

  • @debrabarber3483
    @debrabarber3483 8 месяцев назад +2

    Well, at least it explains the plot hole regarding the 3 faries being absolutely terrible at their job. In the original Disney film, they somehow didn't learn how to bake or sow after 16 years of apparently not using magic. Then blew it all and gave their cover way over a colour fight. Dumbest thing I've ever seen in a movie. It bothered me when I was 7. Like, how did that baby make it past 3

  • @brandiarmstrong2902
    @brandiarmstrong2902 9 месяцев назад +1

    58:27 I think I get what you both are saying. Maleficent's choices were malicious toward someone who was only very tangentally related to the offensive person, making her far from truly virtuous in that regard. But, she wasn't doing it "for the evulz," as it were. She didn't lash out for absolutely no reason. It was retaliatory, just not as lazer-focused as to be perfectly rational. To take retribution against the one who wronged her, she targeted someone he would be close to or who represented something to him. Bonus points for sharing half his DNA.

    Interesting discussion. I think King Stefan would be worried and afraid of Maleficient taking her vengeance through his entire reign if the story did not evolve as it did. He would have understood that he had provoked her with such a cruel act. And an interesting part is also that Stefan could do such a bad thing becouse he was alone in a human world that must have been tough becouse Maleficient was also alone in her world but without him she would have become a happy "person", she did not have that dark side of ambition in a hierarchal kingdom.

    I’m with your girlfriend. Stefan liked Maleficent when they were children but living in the castle and making his way was more important to him in the end.
    He was terrified when she showed up after he cut her wings and probably regretted that he had underestimated her and didn‘t kill her. He for sure was aware of how much he had betrayed and hurt her but I don’t think that he felt guilty for it. Later he just went crazy out of fear. I mean he locked himself up for 16 years because he was afraid of her. No wonder he started hating her.
    In the original movie she curses Aurora to die and one of the small faires softens the curse to be „only“ a 100 year long little nap. 😉

  • @xejelah
    @xejelah 9 месяцев назад

    I think it's more basic. He took her wings to receive the kingdom. Any guilt he may have felt at the time has since been justified by what he gained and he rationalized by following his father's rhetoric. He knew he did wrong and knew she had the power to take him down if she wanted. The more he feared her the more he became paranoid and tried to convince himself he was the powerful one and she's nothing.

    He lost his father (Maleficent was responsible for his dad’s death as far as he’s concerned imo.). He also wanted his dad’s approval. I would look at his relationship with his dad to get to the root of the young King’s motivations.

  • @crystaladams8214

    I believed the king wasn't remorseful for what he did. He's just a coward. He might feel regrets, in that he would have done things differently so that his life was better for his own convenience. However, never because he is remorseful for the bad things he has done.
    I don't think cowards like that don't know how to love.
    Not that it's impossible, but i think they choose whatever is best for them, even or family.
    A great depiction of that is Rumpelstiltskin in Once Upon a Time (a show).
    I've known family members like that.

    i love my classic cartoon disney movies. if you’re gonna react to some cartoon disney movies, please react to Sword in the Stone, the lady on there creeped me out growing up as a kid, and still does today at the age of 32. i’m not really into remakes of movies or live ones, but i actually love this movie. they used her tea daughter in this as a kid, cause the other kids were scared of her dressed up like that. i’m with maleficent tho cause how they treated her. react to the second one, made me feel up. no don’t react to the love action aladdin, no offense to will smith, but the cartoon one with robin williams will always be the best one of course. the one fairy she plays in barry potter as the one everyone hates who’s the teacher that likes pink.

    I have seen this movie at least twice and I just notice that one of the pixies is in couple of Harry Potter movies. Because you haven't seen these yet I don't say no more. Just this spoilers!
