Good essay! I really recommend Stray Dog and Bicycle Thieves, not just for the story itself, but also for the glimpses into postwar life as you briefly mention. Another director who does a wonderful job of providing insight into the period is Ozu, though his pacing is very much the opposite of Kurosawa. I enjoy them all!
