Mountain bikers have been riding at the Palos Forest Preserve for more than 25 years. Over that time they've had to battle for access as other user groups wanted bikes banned.
Now they've got miles and miles of singletrack that riders flock to every day of the week for outdoor therapy.
AND this place is a huge piece of nuclear energy's history.

Man, I love to hear this stuff about the history of local trail systems and trail organizations, the politics behind it, etc. Very relevant and you don't hear much about it elsewhere on MTB RUclips-especially not 50 states worth of it. Great series and I can't believe it's almost over.
Same here
6:50 in, My local group went through the same stuff with IMBA, we left only 3 years after being in it. Programs were being stripped away but they still willing to take %60. We left 4 years ago and haven't looked back.
This is my local trail! I live on the north side of Chicago and palos is my weekly escape from city life. Sure, it's flat and mostly featureless, but I've grown to love these trails and everyone here is grateful to have them. The best parts of these trails imo are stonehoue and the cemetary loop.
Dan M, cemetery hill is awesome. I used to spend most of my time riding that hill. Crazy workout on some of the hills in there.
Absolutely. Stonehouse is underrated. Three Ravines to Stonehouse is an awesome back end a loop
Same here! I love gravity cavity and bull whip
It’s really cool to see trails I helped build on Your channel, keep it up
Also cool to see other locals in these comments!
i know one of the trails was 3 ravines, was the other one bullwhip down by bullfrog lake there? I'm from Willow Springs, been riding in spears woods off 87th my whole life, just starting to venture down south and out west - i made it to stonehouse yesterday. I wanna go to the reactor sites next, are you on strava?
@@GuntherSnaps no, and I won’t be riding anytime soon, thanks to a very cool driver o a 2014 Chevy Tahoe
@@mooseracer9787 I’m sorry
I live in Colorado Springs now, but in 1973 I was riding a 20" tire, Banana seated bike on what are now these trails.
Palos is great and it has plenty of room to grow even more.
Too bad you did not have time for a loop that would include XX, the extension, Bloodshed, Dynamite road and Psycho Path. The first three give some tech and even a little "Chicago slick rock". Last two are pretty good and long (relative) downhills.
Yep! I was surprised when XX Extension wasn't the thumbnail lol. The most dramatic and techy trail there and he missed it
Same, it would have been cool to see our tech trails featured!
The speech "My friends" just made everyone happy
This channel is always so uplifting, interesting, informative, and fun. Thanks for the knowledge and thanks for a great vid.
I’m probably the only one but I find your outro’s so relaxing. Just hearing that acoustic guitar and watching the time lapse of the van traveling down the road is very satisfying!
Such a great series! Love to see all the trails that are underrated because they aren’t in a “mountain bike capital” Keep it up!
Even though I wasn’t there with you, thank you for visiting out home trails! Super stoked to see you enjoying them. Going to make an awesome memory for us about when you came to our trails! Hope you enjoyed them!
Unwinding after an exam couldnt be any better thanks to brians new video.
Thanks for being one of the chillest youtubers out there.
Welcome to IL! Palos is a Midwest gem. My home course is Saw Wee Kee park in the far west suburbs. Would love to hear your impression of that place some day. Really different than Palos.
Eric Anderson saw wee kee is 15 min away for me. I’ve never come across anything else like it. Always a great workout there. Brian would have had a blast there.
Used to ride SawWeeKee at night when I used to live in Naperville. Palos was the go to though...
Portillo’s hotdogs are on point but the Italian beef sandwich was way better
Alex Johnson
Pops Italian Beef
Lt. Bagel Bites I’ll have to try there the next time I visit.
Burger too
Thanks for taking us along for the ride again!! Great job!
That note about snowboarding is so accurate, that’s why I’ve fallen in love w MTB this summer!
Thanks for checking out our hidden gem for mountain biking! Just discovered them this year and they have helped to bring back my love for the sport. Next time check out the black diamond trails and have the Italian Beef, it's worth it! Great channel and keep up the good work.
didnt he hit the black diamond trail?
Thanks for showing off our humble but well loved trails, Brian. Regarding my "weird email", I just thought you'd appreciate a post-ride foot massage. 🤷♂️🤪😂
Oh yea, and that is the Cracker Barrel in my town. 👋
Nice to see palos, but I would recommend visiting raceway woods and Andres bike park next time
Brown County State park is worth the drive back! You will enjoy!
There is a lot more riding in Illinois than people think! Glad to see you made it out!
I want to start moutain biking. I a bit from Chicago. Where is the best place to start for a beginner?
@naturesfinest2408 Do you know if there's much riding in southern Illinois (Shawnee National Forest)? Or not so much? I took the train down there from Chicago to hike and hang out, and was really, really blown away by how pretty it was. I know the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana has good riding, but I don't hear anything about southern Ill.
Yep palos. These are some crazy trails for Chicagoland. I build trails in thatcher woods and Schiller which is my home area. It’s pretty flat but trails are trails.
I can forgive that you ate at Portillos. I can't forgive that you didn't ride XX, Xxtension and Bloodshed! That would've been right up your alley. Either way, glad you enjoyed the visit to our neck of the woods.
Agree. BKXC got the wrong ride.
Bad guide and way too slow.
Yea, missed the spicy offerings and a got a wrong paced ride.
@@ChrisMaj Yeah couple of parts in the video where the guides slow him down right into a ravine or before the drops I am pulling my hair out. If they wont do the drops on gravity they were not going to take him into xx extension and bloodshed. Dynamite road down is allot of fun too.
Every series you put out is fire
Nice to hear the Mt. Diablo shout out. I spent my elementary days on Morgan Territory Road. Looking forward to the Brown County visit as I try to make it over there every year!
I have more fun than anyone at Palos riding my steel rigid SS 29er! Having moved to Chicago from San Diego - Palos keeps me sane!
Wow thanks for sharing this. I am down in this area a lot and didn't realize there was such an extensive trail system nearby. Will def throw my bike in the car next time I head down that way!
I came to mtn biking for the flow state of mind from surfing and board sports, moved inland and needed to find the flow that was 10 years ago. In florida now i get my pick trails or waves when they come. love the vids happy trails.
This one really lived up to the XC part of the channel name! Haha! Thanks for riding my local spot !
I miss riding those trails in Palos. I used to go there as many times as I could. Such a blast working with CAMBR and all of the other riders out there. I need to go back soon!
this is the life...just driving across the country, traveling worldwide and seeing what this planet and nature has to offer. All with the joy of mountain biking. Much love and respect bro you're amazing
Awesome to see my local trails showcased on your trip!
Yoooo! I'm 30 minutes away, so glad to see you highlighting these awesome trails!
I love the allusion to the feeling of flow while snowboarding. I absolutely identify with that.
Amazing video!! I mountain bike at Palos so it was great to see someone like you get to ride my home trails! I so wish I could've been on this ride! Love the videos, keep up the great work!
This is great. Yes, most of us in Illinois know about the Manhattan Project and the work they did at the University of Chicago at Stagg Field under the bleachers.....but I didn't remember this......very cool and glad you brought some Illinois facts with you. Actually in the Northwest corner of the state (Galena) and Southern Iliinois (Shawnee Forest), Illinois can be quit hilly. Thanks for posting.
So awesome you got to ride some of my local trails!! And then you went by my team sho p(an Ibis dealer) on the way out! Hope to ride with you some day man. Have fun shredding!
As a Canadian I have loved hearing the little history lessons on this series. Well done Brian.
Awesome video!!! Palos is awesome too!!! Love that place!!!
Love Palos. Should have hot Sawweekee trails though. Hidden gem
Should have emailed me! This is the first I've heard of the place.
So excited to hear you are going to ride Brown County at some point. Just rode that for the first time a few weeks ago. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it!
fantastic vid man, always enjoy watching these
I ride Palos every day the trails are open. Glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Oh wow, that's great!
Im hoping to make it out of state this next year but it's a pretty great for a local Midwest system.
"Not going to bring the rigid single speed out for that" I would!
Hey, I did a 48-state tour. We learned that Lowe's allows you to dry camp and usually has a guest wifi signal that extends into the parking lot.
I was just there this past Friday! On those trails! First time there and it was awesome! Besides the rain that came down on me. Lol
Minnesota has a great trail systems come up here before the snow
Ill be visitint family in july, and we are staying in worthington mn, any good places where we can go?✌
yay you went to palos!!! been riding there for a while and i love it!!
another gem, keep up the good work BKXC!
I cracked up when you talked about the toll booths. I can picture the police tracking someone across the US because of delinquent payments of tolls :-)
Would have liked to see you ride somewhere in Shawnee National Forest (southern IL) Great trails down there.
ccovemaker where are the trails in the Shawnee forest? Because trail forks and MTB project do not list any.
My trails!!! Portillo's!!! Great vid!!!
Great life you built for you Brian. Thanks for inspire me. Congratulations and Keep doing !!! Next year go South America, come to Brazil !!!
I was in Chicago the same week! It was beautiful weather. Wish I had my mountain bike there 🚵🏽
Also, you have to try the Italian beef next time.
I live right by griffin bike park, go there!! There is xc, some downhill, and awesome trails, a jump park, dual slalom, and much much more
"hahah kewllllll" - gets me every time!
Awesome to see Palos in your perspective!
Another great video Brian. Maybe the 10 Province (and 3 territory) Shred up North for 2021?!?!
Been waiting for my state! Wondering what you would find in our flat state.
this looks like an awesome trail system to try. Been checking out the videos on the Meltdowns they have. Im from STL and want to drive up and try it
Love the correct pronunciation of Palos. Love these trails
My first RUclips mountain bike videos were from Palos. That was back in 2008. 12 years ago now!!!! Those early vids have since been deleted from my channel (bar one). The day of the shaky cam or trying to bike one handed while holding the camera in the other hand 😂
The sound your tires made while rolling over the gravel at 12:40 kind of sounded like a Geiger counter. Lol!
Love the history behind these trails. Can't believe nuclear bombs where made there. Insane. Also was such a beautiful trail. I'm going to be sad when the 50 states shred is finished.... I'm from Australia and I'm so jealous of the trails you got. I only started mountain bike riding this year in the winter. The bike I ordered still hasn't arrived. Specialized rockhopper expert. Getting impatient. All this cronovirus. Anyway. Keep it up.
I believe I'm going to get the specialized rockhopper expert as well!! Brand new to the sport! Looks like a great value. Lets ride sometime ;)
Grew up in Woodridge and didn't really know about this place but I wasn't really into mountain biking then. I figured you'd go south around Carbondale where there is some more canyons and elevation changes.
I watching on my 4k tv having my breakfast with your videos are very good, as I am from Brazil and I am studying English, it is helping me too
What a sweet trail, those wildflowers looked amazing
epic content, i hope you had a successful journey and rides!
Awesome as always! Love the History lessons!
Guessing my home state of Wisconsin must be coming soon. Curious to see where he'll go! The southern part of the state is probably a lot more convenient travel wise, but we've got some cool stuff up here in the central part of the state. Ringle, Sylvan, and Levis Mound are all very good. Ringle is the most modern and lends itself to youtube the best. Sylvan is a fun little downhill/jump park tucked into a small bluff in Wausau.
Low 60's with low humidity is perfecto for sure man!
12:22 - should have pulled out a Geiger counter lol
Some other nice trails are in Rock Cut state park near Rockford and Kickapoo State park near Danville.
Mount Diablo is 4th highest mountain in the diablo range at 3,780. Mount Hamilton beats it with an elevation of 4,325 right at the building. Fremont peak outside of San Juan Baqustia is 5,380. San Anna the mountain that is now forbidden is 5,830.
Bit of trivia - mountain where you can see the most square miles from the top of is Kilimanjaro and 2nd is Diablo!
Litchfield had created some awesome trails here recently which is down near St. Louis.
that’s amazing. I’ve been in that area countless times, even the very same parking lot… but didn’t realize there is a trail right under my nose…
Great episode my man!
I'd love to meet you when you come back to Indiana! Brown County is only an hour from me!
Now you got super charged radio active tires. Lol. Just bord waiting for Snow Summit to re open because of the fire.
Nice KLM Bike and Fitness Hat. I bought my bike there. Go Michigan
When you go back to Indiana, Scales Lake in Boonville is awesome
My local trails. It's probably helpful to understand that this is right outside Chicago and local ordinances around here are very restrictive when it comes to building trails. As a result this is one of the few places around Chicago with singletrack.
My wife is from Chicago and introduced me to Portillos, it’s fantastic and is one of those local restaurants that doesn’t disappoint.
Regarding your tolls, I’d say go to their site and estimate based on your route... we got an exorbitant bill because Illinois is crazy... on the order of over a grand for like $7 in tolls.
Yikes. I have gotten the fines once borrowing someone's ipass transponder without registering my license plate on their account. I was able to get all the fines dropped and only had to pay the tolls by just talking to them and putting the plate on my friends account. You may be able to get out of them by signing up for a ipass account if you don't have one as well, even if your out of state and wont use it better then paying the fines.
Shawnee National Forest is the place to go in Illinois. The Midwest has it going on
Not surprised at the flatness of the trails. But hey, it's mountain biking. If I lived there, I would take road trips to go ride in Michigan, Wisconsin.
ridden Palos many times, super cool to see you ride there and post the video. Lots of memories on that course. I'm curious tho,m are you running electric shifters? If so, how do you like them? Also do you ride clipped in, or run flats?
Can’t wait to see Indiana, I hope you ride brown county @bkxc
Hi Brian,
I wouldn't go with the sugar free gatorade. Your body actually has a similar response to the artificial sweeteners as it would to sugar so they really aren't better for you. Artificial sweeteners (mainly sucralose) can also cause digestion problems if you start to consume them regularly. With the amount of activity you're doing, your body is primed to handle a high carbohydrate intake, but maybe have a small regular gatorade, banana, and Tbsp peanut butter. The extra fiber and fat will slow down any spikes in blood sugar from the gatorade.
I'm currently working on my masters degree in nutrition and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about your diet in correlation to your riding. :)
Happy Travels!
Perfect gravel bike trails! Definitely hardtail territory. Looked fun
Nice treal i love it👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 my dream bike❤️❤️ from philipines
BK: Don't email me you bunch of weirdos.
Also BK: Not you, you're not the weirdo. Here's my Patreon!
=D
When you go to Montana go to Big Sky Cyclery in helena and go ride with gravity guild up on the ridge trail... you'll be there for a week or so...
when you coming to Oregon we must ride some trails!!!!
Southern Illinois is trying to get trails made we have one in the Carbondale area called touch of nature its in its infancy but its getting there.
You *can* get through Chicago without paying tolls, it's hard and they are literally every ten miles.
if you make it to iowa soon have to visit davenport we have some great trails here
great vlog mate cool story about the reactors and then they buried it lol
Seeing all the baseball parks wood be cool, sit down, unwind and see a game, then get a Jersey from each ballpark and souvenir cup from the ballpark, and photo with the team mascot, just to bad the baseball Jersey are so expensive 🤑🤑 😵😵 I do hockey game on my travels
These are my local trails. Nice.
I have trailforks app and have been out there a few times. Any recommendations as far as "flowy-type" trails? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Stay well......stay healthy.
@@keithswynenburg2608 tbh, I've always loved mountain biking, but I got my bike right before covid hit. I've also only been there a few times. I'd suggest going to the CAMBR website. They have a lot of info on the trails there.
Same here!
@@keithswynenburg2608 Campground Trail has the longest flowiest section at Palos, just look up "Best Flow Trail at Palos". ;-)
@@Atomicriffmaster Surreal isn't a legal riding trail - any responsible RUclipsr wouldn't film riding on an unsanctioned trail.
Born and raised in Chicago, and I have to agree with your friend from the area. The Italian beef sandwiches are way better than a Chicago dog. Personally, I think there’s too much crap on it - and no ketchup - shit just falls outta the bun after the first bite.
Awesome Brian as always!! \m/
