    The screwdriver came out real nice and functional, it would work great as a impact type screwdriver with that bolt head. Nicely done.

      This sort of die setup seems like it can be used for stuff other than screwdrivers. I'll keep experimenting. Thanks.

    Very cool Glenn. Thanks.
    I could see how the different guillotine dies could be used to make all kinds of decorative punch shapes because of this simple vid. (basically anything you wanted to file/grind into one or both dies). Awesome.
    I find it amazing how much heavy industrial process can be simplified into (or was possibly derived from) the simple blacksmithing tools of the past.
    Thanks again.

      What I lack (most of the time) is imagination. With the right thought process, so many things can be created through blacksmithing. Tools to make tools... Thanks.

    Good to see your getting settled after the major construction. Always interesting and thought provoking posts. I like Randy Richards in The Shop observation with the bolt head. Clearly this could be a specialty tool set ie square, hex etc.

      I'm finally getting back to business as usual and not going bananas fixing the roof leak. And yeah, this could go in a lot of directions depending on the head type. Thanks.

    I am always impressed by your experiments Glen. You teach us so much each time, about the benefits of playing around with differet approaches.
    From RUclips's ever-present Algorithms, I've now been instructed to look at The History Guy's episode from a year ago, about _The History of the Philips Head Screwdriver._ Amazing how Artificial Intelligence works out all the key words to make full rounded study of the topic!

    Wow, that´s a cool idea to forge a Phillips screwdriver. I use nearly the same dies for forging 4 winged arrowheads.called Tudor-style.

      Funny thing is that I thought about arrowheads when using this die set. These videos are great way for me to learn as I go along, doing stuff like this that I really wouldn't do otherwise. Thanks.

    Planning on making myself some high quality screwdrivers. This is going to help me a lot! Its so hard to find nice cabinetmaker screwdrivers or gunsmith screwdrivers these days.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 года назад

      With some practice, I think this method can be used effectively to make some quality screwdrivers. But I also potential for other things like certain chisels or arrowheads. Thanks.

  • @BrianDaleNeeley
    @BrianDaleNeeley 3 года назад +1

    Now you just need to forge a set of screwdrivers from RR spikes. Phillips head screwdrivers are actually MEANT to cam out, in order to prevent overtightening.

    • @gstongs

      My screwdriver here definitely cams out so good to know that! Thanks for sharing.

    Looks like your shop is pretty much outside, how do you keep all your equipment from rusting? Your videos are excellent.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 года назад

      I'm outside but under cover. And I'll extend the roof line soon. The best way I've found for preventing rusting is by frequently using/handling tools. But I also sometimes spray and wipe stuff down with oil. Thanks for watching.

    Very interesting. When you were using the dies, did you turn the stock 90 degrees between hits or were you only turning it 180 degrees (turning it over)?

    • @gstongs

      Good question! As I remember, I only turned 180 degrees. I'll have another go at this. Thanks.

    Please be wary of unknown steel, especially if it react curiously, could be toxic. Of course you are outside, still,remember Murphies law.Stay safe, you are too appreciated to lose.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  3 года назад

      Although that steel was unknown, the one known is it definitely is carbon steel and so I should be safe there. But yes, some metals (or coated steels) are very toxic at high heat. Thanks for your reminder.

    A heading die in the hardie hole works better. D2 is a good choice for the header die. A grade 12.2 bolt should be a good choice for the screwdriver. Just sayin' cause been there!
