Making an Heirloom Screwdriver

  • Watch as bladesmith Walter Sorrells makes a screwdriver from scratch. Okay, that might sound like a joke. Why make a tool that you could just buy at Walmart? In this case, Walter is making a set of heirloom tools for his son's 21st birthday. But sometimes you might want a tool for a specific job or a specific size or type of screw, and making it yourself is a handy option. See how to use simple tools to make a simple tool for yourself.

    I like the tip about using an old file and the edge of the file to scrape the scale off before moving on to your better files! You never cease to amaze me Walter! I watched your videos when I started to make knives 7 years ago and now I have my own RUclips channel teaching other people how to do it. Thank you!

    I enjoy everything that you do. Your comments are perfect. "Gently wack it into a taper." After watching several blacksmiths, I realized that they are gentle. Even your taper technique is with soft hammer blows. Many non-blacksmith friends think we need to swing from the moon when hammering.
    I like your tip for those not equipped with all the tools. I do understand your list, but using a claw hammer. Knowing how we heat treat metal, isn't using a claw hammer dangerous? Yes, we aren't wacking the metal hard, and we are hitting hot (squishy) metal. I get there might not be any safety concerns. Though we've always advised using a ball peen for metal work... Even a cheap ball peen.
    Anyway, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge, skills, and humor. Thank you!

    Leaving that bit of heat treating oxides on the top of the shaft in the final piece was a nice touch to keep that sense of handmade warmth. I always enjoy these various tool-making vids of yours. Thanks as always for sharing, Walter. 👍👍

    I noticed the spalted handles at the end and wanted to know if that was stabilized. That is quite the present to your son. Well done Walter.

    You can easily turn wood handles without a lathe, after breaking the corners just insert a small machine screw into the end of the handle, fasten the head of the screw into a drill then use a 60 or 80 grit flap disc on a angle grinder to sand it as you operate the drill on a slow speed

    Awesome looking screw driver. For the next ones, you might want to think about using hex bar, or maybe square. That way you could put a wrench on it for really stubborn screws. Just a thought.

    Screw Grainger, they are WAAAY TO OVERPRICED. You couldn't buy anything at home depot or tractor supply for half the price that Granger would sell it for for the same exact thing or anywhere else on eBay on Amazon. I've dealt with Grainger a lot, The casino I work for uses them to order our stuff in maintenance So I am not paying for but if I were I dam sure would not be using Grainger

    Another thing to bear in mind Walter is every f****** episode doesn't have to be in over explained teaching episode of every single thing you do in touch s*** gets old other people with other channels have separated Playlists on their channel to go back if you want to learn the basics you don't have to teach the basics every single video It gets really old

    • @mostlysquirrelworks
      @mostlysquirrelworks 4 года назад

      I shouldn’t engage the trolls, but...
      Some of us appreciate (or even enjoy!!) the teaching format. If it’s getting old, then don’t watch.
      It’s Walter’s channel, he can present the information in any format he wants...
