The real beauty of Rivera's game was his ability to land pitches dead in the strike zone that were still unhittable, night after night. Everyone knew what he was going to throw ... but that didn't help them.
Not just strikeouts, but so many soft grounders, choppers, comebackers, broken bats etc. he was also a great fielder on the mound, one of the more athletic pitchers in the game.
The best closer ever. There will never be another Mariano Rivera. A class act. It was a pleasure watching him. If he is not a unanimous pick to be in the hall of fame, I don't know who is.
That song was so fitting for moe. He literally put lineups to sleep. You heard that song and moe coming in you knew you didn’t have much chance, he was that damn good
You didn't have "much chance", you didn't have ANY chance. Every team that ever faced him should have just forfeited the moment this song started playing so they could spare themselves an exercise in futility.
Every time I look at a Yankee's game now a days, I envision Mr. Mariano Rivera coming out in the bottom of the ninth to save the game. I wish we could play forever.
I met Rivera in 95 at the stadium I came early so he was signing autographs with a big smile probably 165 lbs then , he was unknown at the time and signed my glove. I figured by the looks of him he will be a nobody. I then went on using my glove to play baseball and softball and the autograph is long gone.!!!??boy was I wrong! ?And the rest is history! would of been something really special to hand down to my son . One of my biggest regrets!
Peace On earth Was at the very least a great memory... I got Neil Peart to sign my drum sticks, however I played with the f**king things like a STUGOTZ!!!!! Gone was the signature, but not the memory (from what I remember anyway)!!
What makes a great player is not just his skill to play the sport but the way he presents himself. It's like jeter vs Rodrigues or messi vs Ronaldo. Truly a legend that will be missed
I am honored to say that I personally know this man in real life and his son is my bestfriend, such a great family everyone is so nice and thoughtful and kind. on top of the fact that Mo is just a tank
If Mo didn't move fast, it was only because Mo didn't need to move for anyone. One day he got 600 saves and the entire Rays lineup gave him a standing ovation - do you know why? It was out of respect.
I was talking to my dad the other day about Yankee greats. My dad is a lifelong Mets fan and Yankee hater - I prefer the Mets but it's hard to hate the Yanks, with their long history - but I found his thoughts on Mariano to be quite telling. "You might as well turn the game off when he comes in. It's automatic... he's only gonna throw the cutter, he's gonna retire every batter he faces, he's gonna break two out of three bats, and he's gonna throw about eight pitches." It's totally true.
@@Taylorslade123 Also given how velocity were measured different from the 1990s to now, Mo's mid-90s pitch in his early career probably would have measured in the same level as Jensen's hyped up cutter for all we know.
God , am I going to miss him. Just the best closer in my lifetime! Thank you for the thrills, the memories. Class with a capital "C" See ya in the HOF.
I remember a game where the Yankees were hosting the San Fransico Giants at the stadium in 2002. The big matchup was Barry Bonds versus Mo. With two strikes, Bonds swings through a pitch that Mo puts on the corner of the plate and just under the knob of his bat. Great example of Mo's control.
Its so weird, I had never known a Yankees team without Mariano, Pettite or Jeter. Now Mo is gone and Jeter's done after this year. Its gonna be a completely different team. Hopefully Robertson, Warren, and Betances can put up some great numbers.
I'll never understand how this man is one of, if not the best pitchers in history with only using variations of the fastball and nothing else (sinker, cutter, etc.) ...Rivera is another level of human lol
Today is the honoring of Mariano Rivera at Yankee Stadium and I am so lucky to be going, this will also be Andy Pettite's last start at Yankee Stadium. I'm a Yankees fan, but I think I speak for all REAL baseball fans when I say, we love you Mo, your the greatest, we'll miss you.
It's like his cutter phased out of existence and re-materialized behind the plate in the catcher's mitt. The only indication of it not being an illusion was the broken bats. So. Many. Broken bats.
The cut fastball that destroyed many at bat. Is it any wonder the best closer in the history of baseball was unanimously inducted into The Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility?
Just got back from the game, they lost, but he pitched two amazing innings, and Pettite was amazing, one of the most touching ceremonies I have ever seen, Metallica played, and Jackie Robinson's family was there, it was crazy
Riviera's cut fastball is the best one in the history of the game. With his deceptive delivery, tremendous movement for a pitch in the low to mid 90s, and entry song of "Enter Sandman", he was the epitome of the closer which made opposing batters exclaim: "Oh crap, here comes the closer...this game is over." What a badass way of incorporating my 3 favorite things, the Sandman, Metallica, and baseball! ;)
GREATEST PITCHER OF ALL TIMES!!!! THE MOST AMAZING CLOSING-PITCHER IN HISTORY! AND MY ULTIMATE FAVORITE PLAYER EVER!!! WILL DEFINITELY MISS HIM WHEN HE RETIRES! LOVE MY RIVERA ⚾❤!!!!!!
There's nothing more to say that's already been said about the career of Mariano Rivera. He was the most consistent and dominate closer the game has ever seen. And even though he had one pitch and The fact that everyone knew what it was and that it was coming, no one could any decent contact on it. Imagine being on the opposing team and seeing the demoralizing sight of him jog in from the bullpen with Enter Sandman blasting over the Yankee Stadium speakers. And no matter how good of an opponent your team is, you know that there's no way you'll pull of a late inning comback. The guy was an incredible athlete on the mound and an even classier and better person off it. I can't for the day when I get to see him give his Hall of Fame speech. Again, greatest closer ever and an even better person, I have a ton respect for him despite me having a huge dislike for the Yankees.
It’s so crazy he really only had one pitch and you knew it was, but he had such unprecedented control and unreal ice cold composure that he was able to dominant the sport for Almost twenty years
I got his autograph at a speaking engagement he was doing. What a classy guy, very humble and his handwriting is like something you see on the Declaration Of Independence. Every autograph I have ever seen of his is perfect, it means something to him instead of scribbling a bunch of crap.
I think the point of that whole thing was to show how much sportsmanship Mariano has. He received a standing ovation the next season at Fenway. He knew why and he smiled big at it. That's just what I got out of it. I chose to look at it as a tribute to his character, not something negative. #42 The answer to life, the universe and everything. ;)
100% of the vote for the 100% greatest pitcher in the history of baseball!
Closer
I’ll tell you what, he’s on the short list of people I’d consider for that role
Yeah I know, but I love the Eck :DD
Greatest reliever
The real beauty of Rivera's game was his ability to land pitches dead in the strike zone that were still unhittable, night after night. Everyone knew what he was going to throw ... but that didn't help them.
Richard Sherman Lol!! I SO agree!! It simply wasn't very fair...
Richard Sherman well said.
And it broke the same damn way every time.
no i saw some break the opposite way and others break upwards.
3:04 That's how you throw a cutter. A thing of beauty.
The amount of broken bats alone is savage. What a pitcher.
There will never be another #42
I paused this exact song on itunes to watch this video. Thought there was something wrong with my computer lol
Hall Of Fame Unanimous Inductee 2019! GOAT! I’m so glad I get to tell my son I got to watch his Cutter destroy bats in person. The man is a legend!
Probably why he chose it lol
From a Red Sox lifer...Congratulations, Mariano on your HOF selection. You are the best of all time.
One of the best if not the best closer of all time
Every time I look at a Yankee's game now a days, I envision Mr. Mariano Rivera coming out in the bottom of the ninth to save the game. I wish we could play forever.
I'm a Red Sox fan and I must say that this guy is a beast! Going to miss him believe it or not
Ian Carignan many Red Sox fans like Rivera and Jeter. I always liked Johnny Damon too.
the greatest baseball closing pitcher ever!
No one has ever reached 100% in HOF, but He made it. The first one ever to be agreed by all
Great pitcher great song great video
hero.. best closer
THE HAMMER OF GOD!!! another yankee legend#42

Way to go.
I got his autographed ball when he retired, and sold it for 2500
Oh man !.. epic
You underestimated the best closer in the history of baseball?
That is sad.
What makes a great player is not just his skill to play the sport but the way he presents himself. It's like jeter vs Rodrigues or messi vs Ronaldo. Truly a legend that will be missed
UNANIMOUS!!!! COOPERSTOWN, BABY!!
He broke so many bats, they gave him the honorary title "Lumberjack"! Wow
Mo still pitched at an elite level at 43 years old coming off a major injury wow! I think mo could've still pitched a lot longer
Legend.
I am honored to say that I personally know this man in real life and his son is my bestfriend, such a great family everyone is so nice and thoughtful and kind. on top of the fact that Mo is just a tank
Man no hitter could ever get the sweet spot off him...
actually a few could, but not a lot
Only papi. He doesn't count though cause he was a beast himself.
And Edgar Martinez who generally hits well against the Yankees except in the two of the three postseason meetings for some reason.
Rollsroyce44 That's a lil over exaggerated. He only started to hit Mo when his velocity was down
Dot
Ichiro did but he’s the best contact hitter in MLB HISTORY
Always had the "Old Man walk" Whenever he struck somebody out to end the game lmao!!!
SDS Overfiend lmfaooo

thank you Mariano Rivera for being the best closer for the New York Yankees. I look up to Mariano Rivera because he is my favorite yankee.
that video is awesome!!!!! thank you :) Mariano is the best of all time!

What I always thought was ridiculous about this guy was how his velocity was never that high. His pitches were just unhittable.
John Paul that's not true he threw 93-96 most of his career
+Joseph Cox around 2003-2004 he was regularly touching 97 with that cutter, awesome.
@@Taylorslade123 Also given how velocity were measured different from the 1990s to now, Mo's mid-90s pitch in his early career probably would have measured in the same level as Jensen's hyped up cutter for all we know.
amazing, best of all time
I really miss the feeling of watching a Yankees game and seeing Mariano come in to close it out. Nothing like it
God , am I going to miss him. Just the best closer in my lifetime! Thank you for the thrills, the memories. Class with a capital "C" See ya in the HOF.
Hate the Yankees but you have to admire this legend. Great video 10/10
100% Class and Humble. Even when Rivera failed. He was always level headed. One of the best pitchers I have ever. Best closer ever.
The best all-around pitcher I've ever seen. He makes it look easy, which is the mark of true greatness.
Its so weird, I had never known a Yankees team without Mariano, Pettite or Jeter. Now Mo is gone and Jeter's done after this year. Its gonna be a completely different team. Hopefully Robertson, Warren, and Betances can put up some great numbers.
Back when pitching was pitching they threw complete games. I laughed at the unanimous decision
Nope. All them guys are gone
Welcome to the Hall of Fame and the first unanimous one.
Greatest living Yankee. Period.
1:36 he threw a 96 MPH Cutter that's a rare
That was a 2 seamer.
I think it was a four seamer. it had very little movement and his cutter dives to the left not stay straight.
That was almost certainly a 2 seamer cutters are like a mix of sliders and fastballs what he did there kind of dropped and moved inward like a 2 seam
It looked like a sinker, a lot of downward movement
I'll never understand how this man is one of, if not the best pitchers in history with only using variations of the fastball and nothing else (sinker, cutter, etc.) ...Rivera is another level of human lol

The cut fastball that destroyed many at bat. Is it any wonder the best closer in the history of baseball was unanimously inducted into The Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility?
Welcome to the Hall of Fame!!! #42!!!
A true legend
As a Red Sox fan growing up, there was nothing scarier than chasing a lead in the late innings. He's hands down the best.
Just got back from the game, they lost, but he pitched two amazing innings, and Pettite was amazing, one of the most touching ceremonies I have ever seen, Metallica played, and Jackie Robinson's family was there, it was crazy

The goat
Best. Ever. Period.
In my opinion he'd the 1 guy worth A-Rod's contract because you can 1,000 A-Rod's, but you can but you can never make another Mariano Rivera.
That pitch at 2:05 is just filthy, it looks like it’s coming in on the hands then it just cuts over the plate at the last second
el mejor de todos los tiempos
Every single MLB player who ever swung a bat between 1996 and 2013, bar none, has 'Nam flashbacks whenever they hear this song because of Mo Rivera.

There is no discussion. Best closer ever. '96 on you know what he's throwing and you CANT hit it.
100% Genuine. Some ppl can learn from that.
That's deep. I respect that you admire him, even though you're a red sox fan
honestly unreal
Low 90's with movement. K or weak hit. Complete domination.
I'm going to miss him
He basically told hitters, "I'm going to throw it right there. Belt level, right on edge of the plate. 91 mph. Try to make contact."
As an oriole fan I'm glad to see me go lol. Great career tough.
