Caleb, this song is nothing short of a masterpiece from the first note to last. It fried my mind 🤯 I love your explanation and totally agree. All you have to do is read Solomon's Song. ❤ You are getting some totally amazing comments on this thread ❤ LOVE IT. And just in case you don't know... Dimash's CD dropped in Australia at midnight. You can get a copy from iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, KKBOK or Amazon. In Amazon, you have to search for his name in chinese instead of english. 迪玛希 (I hope they fix that!) Always a pleasure, Caleb ❤ Have a great day!

Hi dear Caleb. A lot of thanks for your reaction. In this video you have put your thoughts on the lyrics. That is very important thing. Because the most of people blew up of Dimash's voice but don't pay attention on the meaning of his songs. But to my mind Dimash is not only insane vocalist but he is a stalker, a voyager, a missioner. He wants to SAY us something. This song is in russian. We russian people are also christians. So we deeply understand what you mean dear Caleb. But i think that translation is not gave the full meaning of the song. Man in this song asks woman to give him love. But problem is that she doesn't. And his passion burns him at all. He can not think of any other thing except of her. And he destroys himself. That's why this passion becomes sinful.

    • @CalebColesMusic

❤️That performance is out of this world!! That throat thing is a Kazakh- traditional way of technically singing thing as far as I have been reading up on! I think Dimash is very authentic about his every technical way of singing! I think he has a deep desire of being real in his singing....can't imagine him trying to "fake" anything. That "weird" sound you mentioned is, I guess, Central Asian, because some Kazakh commenters say it's typical Kazakh and I've also heard it in Mongolia, made by Mongolian singers. I am impressed that you made some research regarding the original singers of the song. You're right. It's a Russian-based Kazakh band called A'Studio and they're right there accompanying Dimash. The composer is the keyboard player. Your analysis of Dimash's vocal techique, especially his breath control, is on point. Loved his runs! Enjoyed your reaction!

@@CalebColesMusic There are two kinds of folk singing (maybe more, but I only know these) that are different from the usual sound: yodel and throat singing. Throat singing is very different, in different parts of the world, different sound and style. Dimash uses one of the types of such singing. Here is a small clip-example of "styles of tuvim throat singing" for understanding ruclips.net/video/xuYep8VNF8I/видео.html

That special tribal riff was achieved by vibrating the larynx and is something practiced in Kazakhstan, Mongolia and other parts of Asia. In this case it is based on a Yakutsk folk melody. While there is reverb on the mic he is doing it really, really fast. Further youtubers have commented that it is used some parts of the Middle East. It is also referred to as a "glottal stop" and used in English when we say "uh oh". A Kazakh youtuber commented: Dimash used singing kazakh technique, that called 'komeymen aytu', You can hear it from the Turan Group. That 'what is that?' moment is what I would call ululation ... a grieving and mourning sound that is very much a mid-eastern sound. I take it to mean he is mourning for the one he can't have. This entire performance is filled with unique sounds and expressions. That last run that his did with one breath was beyond anything I have ever heard. I can't even count how many notes he hit in that run. Can you? The lyrics are so passionate and totally not 'sinful'. I totally agree with your analysis of lyrics. As well as God's passion. Slow down the speed on that section and you can clearly hear what he is doing. Its him in between registers... he just specifically practiced it because the speed of it is insane and probably inherent to his eastern culture.

@@lindahake1666 Honestly, I don't know if it was the first time, because SINFUL PASSION was performed in September 2018 and The love of Tired Swans in November with Igro on Piano and in the same month of November, Dimash's concert was held in London and in an interview. Dimash already quoted Igor as a great composer of neoclassical songs that married his voice. I deduce that they already knew each other before the performances of these 2 songs. I would like to know, how the two met too. I'm sorry I can't give you this information, but if you find out, I'll post it for information. Hugs. BRAZIL.

Excellent analysis, once again + a little biblical exegesis. Nice ! The symbolism of "original sin" (sin, "Attat" in Hebrew means "to miss the target") has nothing to do with sex, indeed.

Hello Caleb! I'm sooo happy that you finally did Sinful Passion!! I read somewhere (can't remember where and I don't know if is true) that exotic and mistic asian cry Dimash did, is a funeral cry in honor of Batyrkhan Shukenov (a former member of the kazakh band A'Studio who died in 2015)
In this Dimash's performance, both the bass and the keyboard players are from the original band.
Sorry for my terrible english 😖😅

Hey caleb thanks for the fantastic reaction, this song is really something else, the fast run who performed after the e6 note is not a Middle Easterner. It's basically similar but This is belongs to Kazakh language and music which is a bit like Mongolian music 💜💜

If you want to know how this sound is made, it starts rolling sound out of the larynx exactly like a Middle Eastern technique, but with the fact that it quickly raises the sound precisely to the throat and from there it changes the sound and quickly The sound goes into the mouth and the volume goes out, To be honest, I didn't practice type of mongli run, but this is something I realized from the accuracy of the sound and status of the apple throat of Dimas. Maybe I'm wrong, what do you think?

Thank you, Caleb, so, so much for your commentaries. You are one of the very few commentators who understand or try to understand the oriental section towards the finale. It is practised in Mongolia, parts of Qazaqstan, and other Asian countries. He does it live, the way all singers who can do it, do. "He just does what he wants to do." I also liked your comments on "passion." I feel exactly the same way. -- Please pay attention also to the gentleman in white shirt, who was the first to stand up and applaud. He is the celebrated Russian Maestro Igor Krutoi. He spotted Dimash at this very Sochi concert in August 2018, and that's when his and Dimash's co-working and collaboration started. We now may enjoy the masterpieces after masterpieces that they publish. Dimash and his family organised a lavish birthday party for Igor just recently. There are at least three videos on that party.

You are correct. Dimash does inspire. He also makes us realise that there truly is such a thing as simply having inborn created God-given talent.
Un unfair amount of it in his case for sure, but yeah. 😁🤣
His training was only to enhance his natural skill.
From an anatomy perspective, I find it interesting that someone as tall as him (6-3) has such control over his voice.
I assume you are gonna do
Love is Like a Dream next and without saying anything, I am sure the issue of voice control will be a point of discussion in that video.

Also, his official music video of Screaming, oh my, it is great and of course Dimash sings all the parts himself. Actually, if I could suggest his music video and maybe along with it (as you have done before) also the live version I think it's called Idol Screaming. If only one then I would have a hard time choosing which to ask for, haha. Have a great weekend! Oh, if you go to Dimash RUclips you can get the good video of Love is Like a Dream. I wonder if there might be a translation problem with the title. Words don't always have exact analogs between languages. In English, 'sinful' bears condemnatory fruit, the product of Puritan influences that might be absent from the Kazakh language. In a similar way, certain English swear words - like the four letter word for 'excrement' - in other languages carry far less emotional freight. In French, 'merde' suggests mild annoyance, and isn't shocking if it comes out of a child's mouth. The English connotation is quite different. English and French have *much* more in common than English and Kazakh. I try to be cautious about simplistic translations of lyrics; they might not mean precisely what the English words imply.
Dimash is using some sound engineering techniques, notably reverb. But no machine made those throat sounds. That's all Dimash.
In this song - and in others - he throws at us so many different vocal techniques, it's hard to keep up. Some of those techniques come from opera; some from pop or R&B; some from Middle Eastern cultural influences. In this song, he uses whisper voice, breathy tones, vocal fry, cry flips, mixed belts, crazy runs, even techniques like that rapid throat vibration that I can't name. He's a virtuoso in all registers except bass (his laryngeal folds aren't thick enough; if they were, he wouldn't be able to stretch up to the soprano range). In this song he demonstrates a rich baritone, a clear falsetto, a powerful tenor, an edgy soprano; he glides effortlessly from pitch to pitch and technique to technique. On that long upward run, he *had* to have passed through some vocal breaks, but we couldn't hear them.
I think it's worth noting that when Dimash wants to deliver a gold standard soprano head voice, he can; he did it in 'Love Is Like a Dream.' You would swear that was a trained operatic soprano singing that high passage in that song. In this song, he inserts more of a sharp edge into those high notes, a hint of chest voice. It's not tenor, or even counter-tenor. It's not falsetto. It's not pure soprano, either. I'll tentatively classify those high notes in this song as drawing more from rock traditions than from opera. Freddy Mercury would have loved Dimash.
When I'm done analyzing, I realize I don't understand a thing about what I've heard. I can't really grasp how a singer can do so much so well.
I would have thought that a singer who throws a such a varied glut of techniques at us would end up with a song that doesn't hang together, but that is not what happens with Dimash. This song is a story, told brilliantly. He puts us at the edge of our seats, like kids at a campfire listening to a gifted story-teller, one who voices the different parts with enthusiasm and wit.
Contemporary pop almost seems monotonous after listening to Dimash deliver intense drama in his music.
Other singers don't have his range - that's to be expected. But any singer can employ drama. It's strange that we hear so little of it. Pop is usually sung in one style from start to finish, at a constant energy level. Lately it's been the rage that singers show off as many incredible runs as they can fit into their songs. There's no shortage of technical virtuosity in pop. But drama is rare. I think that's one reason Dimash so fascinates me. He embraces drama where other pop artists shy away from it.
For some reason, today I was thinking about Jim Croce's 'Operator,' whose lyrics are simply fabulous. But Jim sings the song at a constant energy level and in one vocal style, without much drama, letting the lyrics do the heavy lifting (which they do). It's a great performance and a beautiful song, but it's completely opposite to Dimash's approach.
Dimash is not giving us ear-worm toe-tapping radio-worthy tunes; he's giving us musical theater. That's the operatic influence at work. He stands out, because so few other pop artists approach their craft that way.
    Cheers!
