- In 2019, we filmed a traditional Japanese wet shave video in Kyoto with Mr. Shimomae who is now 79 years old. So he was 74 years old when we originally filmed with him. Each year since then, he asks us to update his age in the RUclips video title 😊❤️
下前理容室 Shimomae Barber Shop is tucked away on the second floor of a building not too far away from the very popular Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.
What makes the experience fun is that he is really friendly and loves all the people from around the world who visit his shop, and he has everyone sign a map and guest book 💈❤️🙌🏼 Visitors from the Netherlands, France, Nepal, and Canada have stopped by his shop.

How much this top of the line Japanese shave cost?
Hi GenEmperor - this cost approximately $18.00 (USD). Thanks for watching!
@@HairCutHarry it looks like a $50 shave at least!
@GenEmperor - yes, his prices are very reasonable! He told us that he has been giving a lot of thought to his prices, and he may consider making changes in the future.
Consider the beautiful simplicity of this: no talking, no music, just a razor on skin and the clicking of the clock.

Back in the 80's when I was stationed in Japan, there was this old barber nicknamed "Shaky Jake". Why does it seem like the Japanese have so much respect for everything. Like even their bartenders aren't just some guy who tends bar, it's a professional. Everything they do they do with consideration, care, and respect.
İt's really just the light they get. Sure, many Japanese people are very orderly and what not, yet WW2 was a different story, most Chinese saw no mercy or respect just as the Chinese don't respect much nor are much disciplined. My point is, these standard assumptions one might have about any country have their limits once one actually gets to be there and/or stays enough in any given place. Not a knock on Japanese but anyone really.
That is so true, all the Japanese people I’ve meet are always calm, respectful, and professional. I wish everybody was like that we would literally have a perspective world.
I'm sure every older person that's japanese or chinese has been through a struggle or their parents have Ethier one, so they probably grew up to appreciate things and be respectful. But during the war they were the complete opposite

That’s a $100 dollar shave right there imo. That barber is a relic and being serviced by him is an honor.
Agree, I know they do not tip in Japan, but I would want to make sure he was paid what I feel he is owed.
Usually, the best services are the ones who do not overcharge because they think they of themselves as special.
Got a shave and a haircut from this bloke today. Best shave I’ve ever had. He proudly showed me this video and how many people had watched it. If you you go to the spot in Kyoto, please tip the man at least a 1000 yen for being a legend.
Can we tip in Japan?? I thought it's rude. I might be in the area next month
@@RafaelW8 don't tip, just thank

@@RafaelW8 out of curiosity why is it rude to tip in Japan. I just find it interesting
I'll be damned. At first I thought "oh well, it's a bit patchy, he's very old, bless his heart", but at the end - cleanest, nicest shave anyone could ever want. Admirable.
Japanese seek perfection especially tradesmen/craftsmen like barbers and woodworkers. A simple thing like a shave is treated like work of art since it basically represents barbers skills to the world since his client will be asked where he got shaved. Love that he used three different styles of razors especially since European hair is alot thicker than most asian hair especially japanese facial hair. He didnt just do it for the camera but for his own sense of pride in workmanship
Never underestimate an old samurai. Orv an old person in general. I mean it.

Quite peculiar to fancy about what should be a barber's job nowadays. Sad and beautiful at the same time.

I think the warm rag stuff is normal. Not a spa, just regular part of any shave to open up the pores first and help hairs stand up, and at the end, to try and calm the skin down to avoid irritation. That’s especially important if you’re shaving someone with a beard. If you go along time without shaving, your hairs get super sensitive

I told my wife that I was going to have my beard shaved. I got it shaved. I came back checked my phone, checked you tube and this channel was recommended to me. They are always listening.
More likely, one of the apps on your phone was paying attention to your location via gps, and that info was used to target you with ads. Honestly not any better than if apps were listening in. Which they are.
There is one time i talk to my coworker about smell in my shoes and that would be nice if there's some kind of perfume for it. I spent nearly 3 years in Japan and Okinawa. I can remember my first shave. I had NEVER had a shave so close and so PERFECT in all my life. The care, detail and absolute professional care I received was legendary. When I came back to the US and got a shave at a barbershop.. It was not even close to it. Not even comparable. Domo' Arigato ne' .. Amazing video! Brought back wonderful memories!
As a retired barber, who loves giving shaves, its amazing to see how many younger clients have no idea the level of relaxation to be achieved with a good "hot towel" barber shave. It was often the wives who would come in and request a shave to "treat" their man. I had so many return clients based on that alone. When I retired several clients asked me to continue shaving, how could I refuse...
Nothing beats a good shave sadly I cant treat myself to a hot towel in this manner but a straight razor and some light classical is a lovely way to start the day. I'd love to actually find a professional in my area that cared, I have gone to several barbers and been nicked every single time, multiple times. I already had some at home I just didnt know what I was doing so I figured I'd pay for it. Needless to say I learned how to sharpen them properly with the strop and I have yet to cut my face or neck once after atleast 25 shaves. Thank you though for the great service you have provided and continue to provide for the many men out there who's lives you've impacted for the better. Sorry for the rant.
Pretty cool you still have the passion for it that's awesome. Would've loved to enjoy a hot towel shave but all I have is a decent mustache and chin and neck hair, nothing on my cheeks. I doubt that would be worth the price for admission. Thanks for sharing!
The hot towel after the shave alone is worth the price. Feels so damn good.
The problem at least where I'm from is that barbers these days see this as a luxury service and as such want to charge me an arm and a leg for what was once just a regular part of the services offered by barbers. I would love to go get a hot shave regularly but it's just not affordable.

💈Craftsmanship at its peak. 👌🏻
I love getting pampered like this.
Absolutely amazing! Best shave I've ever seen.
That guys face hasn't been that smooth since the day he was born!
Lol
Considering he's Japanese, he probably has another 30 to 40 years of life left. 75 is the new 45 in Japan!
Lol, i doubt he will become 115 years old....
Dean he looks to be in alright health so id say he makes it 90s.
good, because one day, when I can actually grow a beard, you can count on me flying myself to Japan for a cut and shave :D
@@tofusrvng You're gonna be so disappointed if you cant grow a beard lol
When i was in high school used to think ill be able to grow a beard, still got barely any facial hair as an adult
Maybe one day since i do hsve little barely noticeable parts
I still shave though rarely since idk i cant see the facial hair but my face looks much cleaner idk if its placebo, my dad has a beard i dont
nothing new
One of interesting parts of this video is that 77 years old man has no need glasses in a profession which vision ability is almost everything. Japanese people really know how to stay healthy👍👍👍👏👏👏
that 50 year old apprentice in the back makes this soooo much better!!!!
This shows how detailed the Japanese are. No wonder their cars are so reliable. 👍
TraumaER their watches too, Grand Seiko rival the Swiss at half the cost twice the watch.
@Joe Al Andy is right. Go do some homework and you will see for yourself.
@Joe Al whatever floats your boat big fella
@Joe Al You have demonstrated a disgusting lack of knowledge and respect for the watch industry. Go do some research on GRAND SEIKO not just Seiko and come back you idiot
William Woods I see you are a man of culture
Legend has it, this shave was so close, his hair never grew back.
Samurai style
This is what a literal master at a craft looks like people. Cherish these documented videos because true masters are a dying breed.
Japanese discipline. Nothing else in the world like it. A+ Job...
S tier job right
Honestly, he shaved him 3 times 👀. Very thorough.
@@Jimmy_Saf This is pretty typical, with the grain, side ways like east to west, then against the grain for a complete shave. If you wet shave with a safety razor and have the time then this is how its done.
Bushido on the blade...
@@thomas1brad but how to avoid irritation and ingrowns?
This was as relaxing as watching Bob Ross paint
I’m doing both right now!
I was thinking the same thing 😂😂😂
This is actually Bob Ross's distant cousin, Yanamura Ross.
Yesss, the titanium white is all over the place
@@ggrinfan now you want to scrape any excessive titanium white that's leftover.
Honestly i wasnt sure at first about the vibe, but 2 years later atleast 3 times a week harry helps me go to sleep,
Thank you brother for the calming vibes🙏♥️
He Is ‘The Master’!

Much Respect!
-guaranteed number one shave experience ever in whole life!
I love the way that even applying the towels to the face is like a little ritual. This man is excellent, he certainty knows his onions.
Yea! That little prep he does just before laying the hot towel on face looked like he was fluffing a pillow, Japan is something else! I hope to live there someday for a year or so.
There is something majestic and satisfying when you see an old Japanese worker showcasing the mastery and discipline of their craft.
The last part of the video they’re showing gratitude each other is very cool. Thank you for uploading this nice video!!!
An incredible attention to detail typical of the Japanese. Great care, calm and peace in the movements.
The world could sure take a cue from Japanese humility and dignity.
Right Fromleft *WW2 Japan has left the chat*
Only took two nukes.
@Must B Nutz it's no. That guy don't know what he's talking about.
It's true only for people in same/close age and only in SOME areas.
@@sirmiluch6856 Still a thing, is it not?
how tf is shaving humility
23:15 the look the barber gives when he's raising up the chair and looking at his handiwork, priceless!
What's the charge for such a close shave?
That's the best shave I think I've ever seen. Like watching a master at work.
Even the way he prepares the towels is mesmerizing.
