I remember when I first saw this...my mom walked into the room about when it started and sat there with me. We read it together, and she was bawling at the end. I was in tears, but she just lost it. She asked me what this was, and I told her "a video game". This was the first video game she ever played.
When the piano hit at "You'll be leaving on travels of your own soon, Hanna", that's when it broke me. That and when Kaim tells her they will meet again, knowing he'll never get to. This game really revealed how much of a curse immortality would actually be. Something we would likely enjoy at first. But once everyone we love begin to pass on and leave us behind, that's when it becomes a curse.
All I could do after watching this the first time was lie on my bed and sob like a child. The storytelling in the Thousand Years of Dreams segments is nothing short of gut-wrenching and beautiful.
The combination of music with this medium of storytelling was brutally effective. I don't think the song in the middle of this story even appears on the soundtrack, yet it's one of the most beautiful and sentimental pieces in the game.
The reason why this story resonates so hard, is the fact that it plays so well into the tragedy of immortality. The fact that you will always lose those whom you come to love. It is the story that defines the main theme of the game.
what makes these so good is the fact it uses the images, music and sounds together to help create the atmosphere and feel as the story progresses, its genuis sakaguchi is the man :)
Im not crying, YOU ARE! For real, last played this 15 years ago when my mind wasn't as open as it is now, I have just replayed this scene as a 35 year old man, and HOLY SH!T, it got me. Rest In Peace Hanna
Ok I don't post on anything here on RUclips...but this is the first time I just wanted to post something. This video was sent to me by a friend who is playing this game and I nearly cry. It got worse when it said "Well meet again. His final lie to her." That part hit me like a Mac Truck lol. This is one of the saddest things I've seen in a video game that made me cry a little.
I know while playing this game I would always think "This next dream is going to be a let down." WRONG. I opened all of them and they were all great. I can't say which is best or worst because I loved them all. I just wish there was more.
Oh my God... I just saw this today after years of procrastinating to play this. This game just immortalized itself into my brain in less than an hour. This is genius... if this game's gonna play out like this, I may have found my favorite RPG of all time.
I'd just like to point out that Kiyoshi Shigematsu was the one who initially made these stories but then they were translated into english by a Professor. One of the ATYoD's that you guys should check out is "Signpost" I'm sure you'll love that one.
I cried the first time I read this when playing the game. Not just tears in my eyes, I literally cried. Especially the ending, the metaphorical images in the background, the music, those last words Kaim said to her, it just broke me. In fact. I got tears in my eyes right now! Not sure if I wanna watch it again! xD
Back when Microsoft was doing the Games With Gold thing, in 2016, Lost Odyssey was free and I downloaded it but I never actually played it until most recently. One thing I really like is that it's by Hironobu Sakaguchi who was the creator of the Final Fantasy series and the music is composed by Nobuo Uematsu. The Final Fantasy influences are present in Lost Odyssey.
when i first saw this story (which was a couple of years ago) i practiclly cried. i never ment to cry, i just....cried. it was so sad, but sweet at the same time. it still is.
This is the saddest shit ever. It's a shame people don't think video games are an art. (i'm looking at you Roger Ebert) If we let him read this I think he'd change his tune damn fast.
I've never played a game that got me misty within such a short amount of time. It's rare enough for it to get me misty at all but this story had the ducts going. So well written and the music works so perfectly. Thanks for uploading this :)
there are so many awesome dream sequences. A few of my favourites were Lottery of Life, Old Man Greo, Grandma Coto's Bread and one more. I forgot the title of it but it had to do with the juvenile prison
I believe that is the definition of subtlety ha. And that was only in the story to further show her innocence and to show how young and untold her life has been thus far. Shes dying before women hood and the only life shes really had were the stories of other lives. It's all just a way of showing how untimely her death is. At least that's the way I took it.
There's no shame in it. The same artistic mind that can write a story like Utopia, The Great Expectations or One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest can write a story for The Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy 6 or Metal Gear Solid and those stories made people cry all the same.
I hate to spam comments, but after reading this story I WANT a game where we only play as Kaim and few other random doing his millions of battle on the endless battlefield! XD Who's with me?!
Unfortunately, the main story isn't as good as these flashbacks Kaim has. Still a good story with a great ending, but nowhere near the quality of these Thousand Year's of Dreams.
I am curious. Would it be possible for you to upload the other stories as well? I would like to show these to some friends as I am sure they may enjoy them as well.
some friends I sent this video to said: "I don't get it". It's kinda hard for them to understand if they don't know who and what Kaim Argonar is. Why no one ever make a movie out of this? They even have money to trash on other junks ( Yes, I meant you Twilight).

bless her heart
It was at this moment that I realized:
Lost Odyssey is not just a game-it is art!
What a masterpiece!
When the piano hit at "You'll be leaving on travels of your own soon, Hanna", that's when it broke me. That and when Kaim tells her they will meet again, knowing he'll never get to. 29 almost 30 here. The music alone hits me harder than before. once in a while I look this up since playing it. Get's harder every time.
Matthew Charles That's nothing in Kaim's lifetime
The combination of music with this medium of storytelling was brutally effective. I don't think the song in the middle of this story even appears on the soundtrack, yet it's one of the most beautiful and sentimental pieces in the game.
I never regret about playing Lost Odyssey. No matter how long it took, stories like this kept me going on.
The reason why this story resonates so hard, is the fact that it plays so well into the tragedy of immortality. The fact that you will always lose those whom you come to love. It is the story that defines the main theme of the game.
I'm already in tears listening to the music. My mind remembers the pain.
what makes these so good is the fact it uses the images, music and sounds together to help create the atmosphere and feel as the story progresses, its genuis sakaguchi is the man :)
no matter how many times i watch this, i always ball crying
Im not crying, YOU ARE! For real, last played this 15 years ago when my mind wasn't as open as it is now, I have just replayed this scene as a 35 year old man, and HOLY SH!T, it got me. Rest In Peace Hanna
The unnerving and shivering feeling the read this story at night, Jesus Christ… you can’t imagine
Probably the kind of game that Square fans have been dreaming for ever since Sakaguchi left.

It's quite something to be able to make me have tears in my eyes for a story about people we don't EVEN see or know in the game. à_à
I was told to check this out. I haven't played the game, but I read all of this and I cried. Holy shit...
The writer is amazing.
I have always loved these dreams sequences, they move me no matter how many times I see them. Makes me want to play the game again...
I know while playing this game I would always think "This next dream is going to be a let down." WRONG. I opened all of them and they were all great. I can't say which is best or worst because I loved them all. I just wish there was more.

I'm sure you'll love that one.
this was so sad. i had to take a little break
Im almost twenty and I nearly cried reading this short story.A hero's return is my fave one so far.
I cried the first time I read this when playing the game.
Not just tears in my eyes, I literally cried.
Especially the ending, the metaphorical images in the background, the music, those last words Kaim said to her, it just broke me.

Didn't expect a video game to make me cry within the first hour...
*This was the first fucking one.* Man, I was scared to see the others.
Spokker some are kinda more heart wrenching. The island boy :(

after the first time the text becomes black, i started tearing up. and it takes a LOT to get me to cry.
Defintely mayne. Most slept on and underrated game of this generation. It's a beaut. Pick it up you won't regret it! It's what FFXIII should've been.
they should release these as an app
Whenever someone talks about how they'd like to be immortal, I send them here, they always change their mind.
this was an amazing game. im tempted on buying a 360 just to play this game and the Last Remnant again.
there are so many awesome dream sequences. A few of my favourites were Lottery of Life, Old Man Greo, Grandma Coto's Bread and one more. I forgot the title of it but it had to do with the juvenile prison
"She can hear him". 😢
"Even if she cannot speak or see, her ears are still alive". 😭
I believe that is the definition of subtlety ha. And that was only in the story to further show her innocence and to show how young and untold her life has been thus far. There should be some kind of internet slang for 'crying out loud'...I love this game
Ranking of Lives is the one i was also thinking about.
Lol 4:38 Kaim is so badass I mean come on I love him!
He is the ONLY character that never got KOed during my playthought. XD
There's no shame in it. The same artistic mind that can write a story like Utopia, The Great Expectations or One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest can write a story for The Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy 6 or Metal Gear Solid and those stories made people cry all the same.
The greatest Final Fantasy.
you run through this too fast, let people soak up the story before you press A. Just a word of advice, I really enjoy these stories!
@masterkeyes2 It's Cooke and Mack's Lullaby :).
Had me in tears. Shit...
I hate to spam comments, but after reading this story I WANT a game where we only play as Kaim and few other random doing his millions of battle on the endless battlefield! XD
