@@RunningThatMouth He was said to be nasty to other black people in the industry and not supporting other black people in the industry. He wasn’t really someone who provided opportunities. Instead of him taking his 30 year career to do something amazing for himself and his community he did nothing. He basically was at one time a highly influential person who sat by complacently as people of color were treated unfairly at vogue. It wasn’t until maybe 2 or 3 years ago he was removed as creative director for basically not evolving he came out and said Anna Wintour was a racist. 🤔😒 That wouldn’t have been a surprise. The unfortunate part for him was he screamed her praises for many years...shit almost 30. So that’s a quick answer to why people don’t feel bad for him. I think it would have been different if he was supportive and kind person but he was highfalutin and arrogant.

If he was smart he would have gotten a coop for $500,000 back in the 80s like most people with a good paying job did or he should have moved south and got a 1.5 million dollar home in a gated community and lived well, but he lived way above his means and it caught up with him.
No offense, but Andre never struck me as someone out to live a modest life. He was quite smug from the beginning. I think I was reading somewhere that someone bought his grandmother a house. I am with the person on the far right; Andre was likely getting favors from rich white people who no longer want to financially carry him anymore. I think he was making decent money, but he wanted to live levels above what he had. Now it has caught up with him.

In my opinion, Andre was a glorified pet, a token to those people, and he knew it. As a Black person, you don't usually reach certain levels/circles in the fashion industry (or ANY industry) because of your talent or influence: you're allowed in because you're a novelty and "fun", even when you have the credentials to stand on your own. But he made a choice to go along with the charade all these decades, because of the access it gave him to fashion.
Deep down, he knew that without their fake-ass friendships and alliances, the privileges available to him would be cut off. Without the benevolence of Anna, he didn't have a leg to stand on in the fashion world. He sacrificed his pride and integrity to be Vogue's adored pet, until he wasn't anymore. He was the first Black creative director at American Vogue, although it is highly doubtful he would've ever been considered to replace Anna. He had a good run, but what a high price he paid.
Adored pet he was not an animal he just was not discipline in his finances he was not easy to think that those people were his friends he didn't even have the backbone to speak up for a raise after at least 10 years yet to some people he was and is an icon this is a tragedy of a story

I read his book, and he threw Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour under the bus and then dragged them while they were under there, so I doubt anyone in fashion is going to try to save him. It's a sad story because in a 2018 interview, he claimed he made $300,000 per year at Vogue when his counterparts were making three times that salary. That could be true. In the same interview, he claimed to be broke, which I believe. He said his biggest mistake was not being able to convert his influence and fame into a "brand" which could have given him some kind of annuity. I used to work in the mailroom for Johnson Publishing (Ebony and Jet Magazine) in New York City and Andre was there working for the company. He was in the Ebony Fashion Show director and was cheap there. When the company did layoffs he was in shock he was let go. When I ran into him years later he was like he didn’t know me and I would run his errands to cover his ass when he was running late on assignments . Nice guy but CHEAP!!!!

That man is educated. He acquired academic scholarships because of his intellect and has multiple degrees. How else do you think a Black man got exposed to Vogue employment in the 80s.
