7:55 - You neglected to mention that the percentage of imprisoned Black people skyrocketed from 2% to 74% immediately when the new system of 'convict leasing' was signed into law.
Also many of the prisoners died while imprisoned, so much so that it exceeded the rate of deaths during legalized human slavery.
Others were permanently disfigured by the shackles and chains that were intentionally tied to them in a way so they could not walk normally.
They were kept bound by them day in and day out, and the metal cut into their skin and flesh, causing infections and permanent disfigurement.

But too many are just unwilling to acknowledge the truth. I suspect it's either because they love to wallow in their ignorance, or simply are racist and love the way these laws effect minorities like myself. Which is sad. Because until we acknowledge the past, a past that directly effects us here in the present, we will never have peace in this country. Until we make necessary changes, we will always have strife and division. And America will never live up to it's promises and obligations towards it's own citizens.

Although the term can be used to refer to a correctional facility located in a remote location it is more commonly used to refer to communities of prisoners overseen by wardens or governors having absolute authority.

I’ve taught as an adjunct at a university for 18 years, while finishing my Phd, yet I continued with my regular job as a non-supervisory Metro cop. I’ve been through numerous symposiums, and have audited dissertations, however the way this young lady articulated this information is much more interesting because she’s very charming with a lovely voice, yet articulates this material much more interesting with actual quantitative data, than when I was working on my graduate studies. Additionally, she is not political only stating the facts. When I attended lectures in Berkeley, DC, or Texas A&M I could clearly hear the skewed facts in Texas as if Texas government forgot that after January 1,1863 the emancipation proclamation was posted throughout the globe, yet the Union General Gordon Granger with thousands of Federal Union Troops actually by made (by force) Texas Government FREE all the slaves on June 18,1865. Additionally I was merely attending these symposiums because my undergrad , master, Phd was in public administration & I required a thorough perspective when finishing up my dissertation. I never thought I would hear facts about Texas and the battle with Santa Anna , the Alamo & all the heroics of the Southerners from Tennessee. Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky etc etc.. But I had heard however didn’t believe until I attended various universities other than the South. Mexico was never fully paid for California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas , Texicans at the Alamo along with politicians from the South actually decided what they would pay, Mexico wouldn’t agree , because they have never believed in slavery, ever. Just like today, we never were enlightened about Mexico fronting us & the entire allies oil to even continue WW2, and that Mexico sent their very best & bravest fighter pilots who also had to learn American English because the US Army Air Corps wouldn’t allow these pilots to be trained on tactics & English by the British. Even though, the fighter pilots with the highest statistics were the British simply because the fighter Air Fighter Group had been defending the entire UK since September 1,1939, thus they had over 2 years fighting the Axis forces, and the US according to global history has always been arrogant about history naming them #1 in everything. The only problem with this is once the rest of the folks discover the truth they won’t ever believe & must fact check everything, kinda like today. But I thought that the US caught the submarine with the enigma code machine, but it was actually the British. Yet being the wealthiest country only the US could write the history. Much like college students are taught that only the winners of any war are the ones who write the history. Yet they never thought that US citizens & Texans would ever venture away, in order to research other perspectives? In order to be a true academic one must listen, learn, and research all angles and always continue to pursue the truth. If not then you have Alamo movies that condemn the Mexican people, but they never mention that the Alamo never had any real Texans, all the people fighting at the Alamo were there because they heard that Mexico was giving land grants, but the land grants were to the people who lived in these wild horse deserts in what is now Texas. The people born & raised in what is now Texas which were Mexican Nationals were supposed to be receiving these land grants, but the people from the Southern states were going to grow cotton & continue operations just like in Confederate states , this is why they were importing slaves into Texas. They wanted to take land away from the real TEXICANS and continue SLAVERY, to this day the Texas Governor still has the Texas State highway patrol wearing Confederate Grey uniforms. Everything about Texas had nothing do with gallantry as it did self preservation of Confederate living with Slaves. The fact that Federal Troops has to come to Texas in June 19, 1865 is evident that Texas had ever intention to continue the Confederate ways before the civil war. It is because of this that we always hear about Texas wanting to recede from the United States. Thank you ma’am for a great lecture.

There is a historical context that cannot be ignored; however, we also can't ignore the scofflaw attitude and culture of urban America that conflicts with non-racialized codes that law officers are sworn to enforce. And evidence reveals that most of the conflicts between law enforcement and Black men has nothing to do with race. And we need to qualify each and every discussion with this fact; otherwise, we embolden our scofflaws and miscreants who are victimizing our community and others at alarmingly high rates.

The laws, culture (law enforcement and otherwise), education system, medicine, etc. in the United States are racist frameworks.
They were all developed with the subjugation, exploitation, and dehumanization of Black human as celebrated practices rewarded by commercial gain as well as actual sadistic pleasure according to slave master diaries and letters.
Well into the 20th century, citizens who participated in brutal violence and the lynching of Black people en masse were never brought to justice. These people are now the completely normal grandfathers and great grandfathers of today. Stop and Frisk, the entire state of Louisiana, etc. are phenomena that was architected by that generation, and they remain havens for their like-minded progeny today, as countless hours of footage, audio recordings, court data shows.
I've lived in countries for extended periods throughout my life. The United States is the most racist of all 1st world democracies by a very wide margin.

I certainly not going to disagree with you about the racist nature of slavery or Jim Crow laws. But when it comes to mass incarceration and the war on drugs I believe you are conflating racist laws with laws that have a disparate racial impact. I suppose some would say that is a distinction without a difference. But in my opinion there is a world of difference between a law passed out of racial animus, such as the Jim Crow laws and a law passed in hopes of improving the lives of mostly minority inner city residents that has the effect of incarcerating large numbers of minorities. To the best of my knowledge most if not all of the "get tough on crime" laws passed in the 1980's and early 90's had widespread support in the Congressional Black Caucus.
I was born in 1968 and grew up in the Bronx. I remember what crime was like in NYC in the 1970's and 1980's. The desire to do something about crime, to do anything about crime was present across ethnic groups. But as crime rates began plummeting in the 1990's, people fear of crime receded as well. The Bernie Goetz case demonstrates this. In 1984, Bernie Goetz was approached by 4 African-American teens (18 - 19) with sharpened screw drivers who demanded money. Goetz, who had previously been mugged on the subway, drew an illegal gun and shot them all. One youth he shot a 2nd time, reportedly said "you don't look too bad, here's another." That young man was left paralyzed. A grand jury initially refused to indict him on any charge but the illegal handgun. A second grand jury indicted on more serious charges, but the jury at his trial acquitted him of everything but carrying an unlicensed handgun. But in the 1990's with crime having receded a civil jury found Goetz civilly liable. As fear of crime receded so did support for more extreme anti-crime measures.
Clearly support for mass incarceration dropped amongst minorities first. The question then is was the sluggishness of the change in white opinions primarily motivated by racism or simple insensitivity? Again some may say that such insensitivity is racism. But in my opinion by stretching the definition of a word like racism to cover anything and everything that has a disparate racial impact you are lessening the power of the word. I used to teach high school in the South Bronx. I can say many kids today don't have a great grasp of history. Well before Rudy Giuliani became Trump's lawyer he was seen primarily as a tough on crime but generally moderate on social issues Republican mayor of NYC. But some liked to compare him to Hitler. Others did the same with George W. Bush. The problem with such rhetoric is that even as it might make the person you are comparing to Hitler seem a bit more extreme, it also makes Hitler a bit more moderate, just a bit more acceptable. I think the word racist should be reserved for hatred and animus based on race so that it doesn't lose it's bite. But maybe the ship sailed on that a long time ago.

@@michellehubbard8865 I'm not sure what you are getting at. Do you mean are/were the high levels of crime in minority communities a legacy of slavery and Jim Crow? I think that was certainly a significant factor, though not the only root cause. But even if racism was the most significant root cause of pathologies in inner city neighborhoods, eliminating racism alone would not be enough to sufficiently improve conditions. I believe there is a difference between for example people that say they want to keep black people from moving into their more affluent white neighborhoods because they don't want black neighbors and someone that supports a policy they believe will improve the lives of black people but in practice turns out to be harmful. That's why I think it's important to distinguish between laws passed out of animosity towards minorities and laws passed in hopes of improving the lives of minorities but that in practice have a negative disparate impact.
In NYC, the NYPD recently disbanded the anti-crime unit. That was a plain clothes unit whose primary mission was taking illegal guns off the street. This was done because many members of the minority community felt they were unfairly targeted by these officers. However, shootings in NYC are now occurring at about twice the rate of a year ago and the overwhelming majority of victims are members of the minority community. The question is was the decision to disband the anti crime unit motivated by racism since it appears to have increased minority shooting victims? Or are those calling for the reinstatement of the unit motivated by a racist desire to harass that community? Or can policies be enacted with the best of intentions that unfortunately have negative outcomes in practice?

I don't get the chart. Finland and Germany seemed to stay flat. I think I get the point, and I assume that the chart was made hastily or something like that (Doh?). But if both text and chart are as they should be, I'd appreciate any explanation I can get.
3:43 The style of illustration and use of the archaic "shewn" make this look like something from an old handbook about ballast, but the spelling "boy's" rather than "boys" is contemporary (at least I think so.) So I'm a little uncomfortable with something that could be, if not fraudulent, maybe shabby. @@DrGlynnWix When I acquired my language (early 1950s), an apostrophe was used to replace a letter or to indicate a possessive. "Boy's" meant " the boy is" or "belonging to the boy". The plural, "boys" was spelled without an apostrophe. You wouldn't write "there were 4 car's in the driveway", but "4 cars". Contemporary language leans to apostrophizing all final "S", regardless of the meaning. You have not discuss why the increase after the 60's. I would agree but violence and crime increase during the 70's, 80's, and 90s. Gangs and cartels invaded America. It was not about racism. Crime was horrible. We needed law and order.
I don't know your agenda of this video but I'm not buying it the victim mentality theme.
Don't break the law if you don't want to go to prison.

One group was disproportionately targeted. Was the college white frats getting their dorms kicked in by the police and sent to jail? Or was it the blacks on the street with small grams of weed and crack?
It was propaganda used to go to war and make blacks look bad. Violence and crime? Yea started by riots because of civil rights and police brutality.

I, who am a phenotypically White Jew, would like to point out that children and teenagers who are capable of learning at their full potential without special education are nevertheless placed into and kept in special education in order to make money off of them. The New York City Board of Education (now called the New York City Department of Education) accepts bribes from corporations to place and keep children and teenagers who actually or allegedly have a disability into separate classes from children and teenagers who neither actually have a disability nor allegedly have a disability against the will of the kids themselves and/or against the will of the parents of the kids. This is exploitation and it ought to be outlawed and stopped immediately! Wrongful placement and retention in special education does not only happen to Black children and teenagers, it also happens to White children and teenagers, Jewish children and teenagers, and all other forms of children and teenagers. Poor Jews are mistreated by rich Jews, the rich Jews place poor Jewish children and teenagers into special education even thought the poor Jews do not need special education in order to learn at their full potential, and the poor Jewish kids are left with no friends. All this must stop! Also, I would like to point out that a lot of the laws in New York City and the rest of the USA are stupid laws (all races, skin colors, religions, and degrees of religious observance are victims of stupid laws) and stupid laws ought to be repealed. Dr. Bainbridge and whoever else is reading these messages, please give your feedback on all of my comments. Thank you very much.

I'm with Malcolm X. How stupid for a people to fight for civil rights when they should have been fighting for human rights.

It’s because we all exist in context of each other, society, & environment. Describing the realities of the times goes with describing the behaviors of individuals & groups & society within those times and spaces.
None of us are separate from our contexts, we can’t be. That the concept of epigenetics, or how biological life operates and evolves.
It’s near impossible to describe or understand a thing without any context.
There is evidence that details the context. She’s giving it. Anyone who doesn’t is manipulating to deceive.

You should red pill all your viewers and make a video about the origins of minimum wage, gun control, planned parenthood, and other left wing policies that were intentionally racist but the vast majority of Americans have no idea about.
