As someone who has been sober a few years, went to a 12 step rehab (twice) and has been to my fair share of meetings and has since become disillusioned with 12 step….. AA is extremely and explicitly spiritual. Yes you don’t necessarily have to believe in a traditional ‘god’ but the role of the nebulous ‘higher power’ is a huge focus of AA/NA.Finding that higher power is key to success in AA (least if your going by the book and what’s said in meetings). I completely agree with everything you’ve stated. I’ve been to 12 step rehabs and lots of AA/NA meetings as well and all of the reasons you mentioned are exactly why I am done with meetings too. I could never make it past the 2nd step in a truly honest way because of the whole higher power thing, and if you can’t do that honestly how can you go on to work the rest of the steps? I knew in my heart of hearts I would never have a spiritual awakening or a god of my understanding or a higher power I could hand my will over to. I am very glad however that it helps a lot of people. I do seem to remember one of the main texts explicitly stating that AA is not a religious program but a spiritual one.
AA is a religious organization. There’s a reason secular alternatives has to be created to fight back against it. The steps are based in religious and spiritual practice.
As a person with IBS, I just want to point out that a vegan diet would absolutely wreck my digestive system. A lot of the plant-based protein sources contain complex carbs that I cannot digest. AA was created by a man who was able to stop drinking because of his devotion to Christianity. He then created AA based on his own journey. One of the steps is literally admitting there is a higher power. AA is not just spiritual, it is religious and that's its very foundation. Cmon now Bob, educate yourself
Isn't the first step of AA to give yourself over to a higher power? Isn't that pretty spiritual? I would hope Bob (and everyone really) would take some time to brush up on his religious literacy because there are a lot of ways to be religious/spiritual. In the US we tend to think religiosity only manifests in certain ways and in their ignorance, don't realize how religious they actually are. I would recommend the RUclips channels Religion for Breakfast, Let's Talk Religion, Seekers of Unity, Angela's Symposium, and Esoterica for all of your basic academic religious studies foundation.
