I'm a black trans man who turns 50 this year. I started my transition 21 years ago. I...don't think of myself as an elder...because I know people who are older than me. But...then I turn around and chat with people who are 20...and they definitely think of me as an elder. Which...that's a trip. Though...I think this touches on something Bob started saying but didn't get to finish because the conversation went somewhere else. I feel like there are more than just two bands. I'm Gen X. I'm older than Millennial and Gen Z queers, absolutely. My era was the Queer Nation era, and I can talk about some historical moments that younger folks wouldn't know about...for example how the word queer as reclaimed by Queer Nation and other direct action political protest groups does not mean the same thing as the way people are using it now. I was in the Army the last two years before Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the first two years of Don't Ask, Don't Tell--that is an experience someone who is 20 will never have. I am skilled in reading subtle queer coding. What I see as insider queer coding within a certain historical context, some younger folks dismiss as queer baiting. I remember queer life before Lawrence v. Texas. My definition of "your coming out story" is very different that my students idea of "you coming out story." I have all sorts of queer and trans experiences that many younger folks may have no idea about...But...I'm also not a Boomer Queer...I mean...I didn't live pre-Stonewall. My 20s weren't the 1970s. While the most deaths due to AIDS was 1992...and I was 20...my experience regarding HIV was very different than someone who was 20 in 1982--who had a sexual life before AIDS was a thing. AIDS was always a thing within the realm of my sexual life...but on the other hand, during my formative years around HIV, there were no drug cocktails and people were dying by the score...many of them those queer people who were 10 years older than I.They lived lives very different than I did. I remember there being conflicts between the generation above me who definitely didn't like that my generation were reclaiming the word queer as a political identity. And now there are generations after me who don't think of it as a political identity at all. So...I don't know...I suppose I think of it as Queer Generations rather than Elder vs. Not-Elder. You know...resisting binaries.
As I stand here listening to your podcast and ironing my husbands of 23 years work shirts, I’m touched that you guys would recognize our battles. Some of my dear friends didn’t make it to see how far we’ve come and how our efforts are bearing fruit in you guys. Love y’all.
I always listen to you guys when I need cheered up 💜 Thank you just for being you and putting smiles on thousands of strangers faces. You brighten up our days!
I think there should be a biopic for Rupaul & a drag race unsung type of tell all show years down the line where different queens tell the tea and secrets of the series.
Love the casting and drag history convo. I vote for a segment where y’all recount an iconic moment in drag/gay history like you did on this episode about ru Paul reading ol boy during the awards ceremony. Hilarious and informative!
That is sooo true about being on the train, falling asleep and just waking up right before your stop. Born and raised New Yorker, so blessed nothing happened to me. I used to go out back in the 90s LIMELIGHT days.
Tbh i didnt understand anything about the Atlanta and New York bit bc im from Panamá and dont understand what yall are discussing lmao but i sure love to hear you both bicker. Love you queens😍
I'm behind on episodes but thank u for introducing me to omaretta the great, I looked up some of her songs and loved them! Btw the "not Atlanta" one is called "Sorry Not Sorry" :) I'm 33 and my knees are rickety and crickety asf also 😂 idk if that's normal for your early 30s or comes from dancing in heels for a living, bc we definitely have that in common lol
I think it's called your internal clock. That's what my dad used to call it, and he's a biology major. He would always wake-up before his alarm like clockwork because he had worked at the same time for over forty years Lololol
So basically what Bob is saying is... smokey the bear was pointing to bob the whole time...ahahha😂👏..side note..can we be honest and say we all knew trixie would be one of the names to miss saying hbd to monet lmao 🤣👏 fkn trixie daddy warbucks Mattel is wild lately 🤣👏ahaha
Wondering if Bob & Monet have seen the 5ninthavenue videos of Lady Bunny walking around NYC out of drag in the 80s - would be cool to see them react to them!
Bob - your plan for RuPaul’s biopic is actually so good. Especially the ending - perfection. And then they can put up a montage of pictures of the real rupaul and what happened after “RuPaul went on to etcetc” while the credits play (or before them). And then it can end with a poignant quote from RuPaul’s latest book because he loves product placement and also can give the audience inspiration and chills (again - after the actual movie ending). I’m not sold on Trixie doing Lady Bunny. Would be good for marketing but I don’t think it’d be worth it. Spend that money elsewhere.
I love how buck Monet gets when NYC is brought up! I feel the same about the Bay Area!!!!!!!!!!! I’m from the City and fools from Daly City be thinking they from THE CITY, NO YOU NOT! Them the suburbs! Lmao!
Don’t let Bob fool you. He was out there in the woods perfecting his pyro skills so that he can burn down libraries😂
Monet: “it was a minute long”
Bob: “no it wasn’t”
Bob: proceeds to speak a minute long recant. 😭😭😭😭😭
Monet was ON ONE on this episode checking Bob left and right and I am living for it!! Lmao
I live when she does that lol
I am living for Monét’s energy this episode
Totally agree about Bunny needing some kind of movie about her. She's a damn legend for real. One of the funniest and smartest people around.
