I greatly admire older less flexible folks who are willing to do whatever is necessary to accommodate their physical limitations! I helped pioneer the sport of sea kayaking on the East Coast in the mid 1970s and was considered an expert paddler. Today at age 74 after years of not kayaking I suffer from crippling rheumatoid arthritis and getting into or out of a kayak is a real challenge. At first it was embarrassing as I struggled getting in or out of my kayak. But as soon as I was in my old paddling skills came right back. I hope this video will encourage older, less fit, folks to give kayaking a try and I applaud this lady for getting the ball rolling!

Thumbs up, if for nothing more than she actually made it in, without landing face first in the water. I just bought my first kayak, I'm almost 63 years old, and it was such a hassle I told my wife I was taking the damn thing back and buying another canoe. But, this gave me a different outlook, and it didn't sink, which is what I thought mine was going to do. Kudos to the nice lady that showed us how.

This video is pure hope! I have crippling arthritis in both my knees and after a few years of the blues about that am working to get some of my flexibility and mobility back. I love kayaking but thought it was in my past. Thank you for giving hope to those who still want to but have been afraid to try. As my Dad always said “Inside every old person is a young person just trying to figure out how to keep doing what they have always done in spite of uncooperative bodies”.

How inspiring this lady is. I’m 59, Advanced osteoarthritis in both knees. Went in my kayak for the first time a month ago and loved it. Not elegant getting in or out but determined to continue with it. Bought an itiwit x100 because it has the drop stitch floor which is solid enough to stand on and big enough to manover around.

Thank you, Nancy, for showing us oldsters that kyaking isn't out of our reach. When a person is old and has stiff, painful joints (arthritis) it affects our whole body. We don't bend as easily anymore nor move as fast or have the great balance we once had when younger. We oldsters have learned to compensate by moving slower and being extra careful so if our movement becomes risky, we have time to stop. I think you did great.

@@nancytoday6858 that depends upon the cockpit opening. The longer kayak would track (go forward in a straight line) better. Pelican makes some good entry level kayaks for the recreational user that have larger cockpits, making it easier to enter and exit. Just a consideration.

I actually have this kayak just a few years older, it tracks absolutely amazing way better than my brother's 10' brand new pelican. This spefic kayak punishes you for poor paddling or sitting technique with tracking so it often gets a bad reputation. I've run many rivers lakes and creeks when the waters high enough, with it through out the past 5-6 years and I absolutely love it it's my go to in my collection. I even fish out of it with no problem. It's an awsome boat when you use it right.

I can't bend enough at the knees to get in this way, and I'm tall so balancing is an issue. I devised a way to get in and out for myself. I pull the kayak into the water just under knee-deep ( getting in on the left side) then I hold on to the rim as I turn and sit myself down into the kayak pushing on the far side to keep it reasonably stable. I swing my legs in and get settled. Coming out same thing. using my paddle to tell how deep I am. I swing my legs over the left side the pushing myself up and land on my feet ( keeping the kayak reasonably balanced by pushing on the right side of the rim. The kayak does tip but not enough to take on water.
