The boy who died chasing an American dream - BBC News

- The United States is set to overhaul how it handles illegal migrants after a young boy and girl, both from Guatemala, died while in US custody in December.
Their deaths coincided with a spike in the number of young migrant families apprehended at the border. Many of them come from Guatemala.
To find out what is driving young families to the US, the BBC's Patricia Sulbarán went back to the village of one of those children, Felipe Gomez Alonzo.
Of all of Central Americans trying to cross the border to the US, Guatemalans are the ones doing it the most.
There has been a vast increase in the number of women, children and families from Guatemala migrating to the US.
Most people from Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, travel in caravans.
The BBC's Patricia Sulbarán has been to remote Guatemalan indigenous communities where people are using people smugglers to make it to the US

Regardless of the politics, I as a mom, am so sorry for your loss, the loss of a child is awful...may he rest in peace.
Donna lemmo, you should say regardless of the law not politics. It's against the law to come to America illegally. These parents did this to their child not anyone else. The states gets blamed for these peoples stupidity.
I blame the father.

So why not hold the parents accountable for bringing him on an illegal journey ? It doesn’t seem wreck-less to you at all to let a little kid go on a journey like that ?

Michael you only say that because you’re not in their shoes.
@@omarnavarro97 Didn't sound like the boy could even afford shoes. BBC News is putting the blame on the United States for the Guatemala governments corruption. Transporting that child across Mexico using smugglers was there mistake. When large invasions or caravans are headed for the US they should have expected the possibility of having problems entering the country. BBC News needs to do a video on the fine Guatemala government and how they treat their people. Don't try to start a war, BBC News.
No they didn't he had a sickness
Omar Navarro my parents were, but they still did it legally so i could be born an American. The key word here is legally.
seb engeli prior, yea, and his parents drug him along anyway. Then he died by the time he made it to a hospital. They did what they could, parents fault
There are so many factors why people of countries like Guatamala think the way they do. These people got very limited options and in the edge of desperation. Sure, don't make kids if you can't afford it, however, in their perception, having kids is a norm. I know it's wrong but let's see it the way they see it. They need to be enlightened that each countries have set of rules and they need to respect it. If other countries can help them, maybe only by then, they'll realize they don't need to sacrifice so much just to get their basic needs. It's a long process, but it's reality
Ramir Enriquez the sad thing is these people don’t seem to be respectful of the lands they are born in. They seem to be surrounded by a beautiful country and they are able to grow food but they are not satisfied. In the US we have people living off grid and then you have Guatemalans running away from what could be a wonderful life. Instead they are chasing money and dreams. Once in the rat race you are a slave and it’s hard to escape.
@normawong123 You’ve obviously never been to Guatemala or remotely understand why they’re willing to risk EVERYTHING to get out.
The people who live off grid in the USA is not remotely comparable.
Go read, travel and learn something!

@LOCAL COPE well that sets you somewhere in the idea of mass murder.
@LOCAL COPE you know this is a hard problem because killing them os not an option right? They are still people even if mass migration isnt good for America.
@LOCAL COPE I can't extend my disbelief enough to believe for a moment that you have had the right to vote in the 2016 American presidential, or anything else.

Ameen!
I am so sorry for the families lose.It is a dangerous trip and things can happen to small children especially.
To all immigrants who are planning to go with your family I'd say it's best if you stay at home unless you don't want to be separated at the border from your children
I would say, if you want to come here, then either fill out the paperwork and apply to come here legally, or go to a port of entry to apply for asylum and wait like everyone else who respects the rule of law!! Or maybe better yet, fix your own damn country!
This is insane, it is not anti immigration policy. It is anti illegal immigration policy. A country must be allowed to control who comes across its borders. I have no issue with allowing as many legal immigrants that there is jobs to fill. The US allows the most legal immigrants of any other country in the world yet we are falsely portrayed as bad guys when we say you cannot enter illegally. I feel bad for the people that want to enter and cannot. But pure emotion without any use of reason is foolish and wrong.
These people are stronger than they know. Godspeed to those honestly seeking a better life and refuge. We are hurting with you.
That’s so sad my prayers go to your family xx
I think we should make it a priority to help these people in their countries rather than risking the long trek to North America and being held at customs. Where’s UNICEF?
Penny Proud I’m saying it’s a global issue. Can’t the UN and other wealthy nations try to help?
@@PennyMsElite They spend around 1.8 billion on foreign aid
Penny Proud There’s always going to poverty and corruption. The only thing we can do is urge agencies and wealthier countries to step in and help restructure their society
Grady D it’s funny but why do people donate? They donate to a business not a charity.
Coral Rain you know UNICEF was exposed for funding terrorism right?
No amount of opportunity or perception of wealth is worth a child's life.
Was their trip to the United States border before or after the United States said they're closing the border/new customs limitations etc?
Before, obviously, considering how long it takes to travel that far.
Very sad and tragic story
These people try to deny their own part that did. This makes me look down on them. Please don’t just blame others without asking oneself what one did wrong.
No one is making you look down on them except your own bias. They did nothing wrong except fight for a better future.

I wish this video delved into how exactly the poor little boy died. I think it's both the parents and the US government's fault. He wasn't able to look after himself!
US Government's fault? They haven't done anything, aside we would've let him in legally as a child. Please don't get fooled by the main stream media. Nice to meet you

If you whom have nothing positive to say, they don't say anything at all. And just read & move on.
As a death to anyone, young or old & for what ever the cause is, is a devastating fact of life.
And to be a child its even worse then one would want.
So when you speak ill of the dead and for what others do to have a better life.
Remember you are blessed to be where you are & have what YOU have.
Not many people in this world have such chances in life.
So while you live you're life eating and sleeping as comfortable as you are. There are many that don't have that one single chance.
And in a US nation that have rights as FREEDOM to live & do freely
As other countries all over in the world just simply don't have and NEVER WILL.
So save your negative comments and be move on quietly.
True....and we all know that Americans are stealing Latin people's resources!!!!!
I do not fault them for trying to better lives, but the death of this child is not the fault of the USA government as many would like to blame. Also I would like someone to investigate and find out what their government does with all of the USA aid. Stay and make a difference. Don't just leave your country but run as major or become a judge or even President. School isn't the only place you can educate yourself. You can start with your community. Do what is necessary to upgrade your neighborhood. Maybe open a grocery store or a community center for the elderly proving food and as an outlet to stay connected. This creates trust.
Americans should know one thing . They are strong and developed because of migrants. This protectionist approach will hurt America ultimately. One is legal migrant or illegal migrant , that should be processed legally. No one love to leave his/her home . Everyone want a peaceful happy life. If America is a great country that’s why people want to go there , leaving their own homeland behind in the past. The death of such innocent kid should be condemned by the international community and hold American government accountable. This is not the way to treat human beings and humanity

then dont come illegally ..tell your mom...your death is not american responsibility....dont play victim card live in your country mama
do stupid things win stupid prizes. those parents should be the one responsible for this
So. people are living in poverty and an only want to succeed in life. They want a decent jobs and a good community to live in. So why don't their countries provide this? Seems like rather than looking at the horrific aftermath of young children dying while trying to make a gargantuan trek across vast and dangerous lands, maybe we should look at what the initial cause for the lack of these previously mentioned issues are. Why do they not have a good job? Why do they not have good healthcare? Why do they not have a good educational system? And rather than blame a country (U.S) for protecting its sovereign territory (which nearly every other country does). Let's work to fix the root cause of all of this. Then maybe, we wont see these kinds of stories. But I guess drugs and corrupt governments are far to lucrative.
His parents are to blame....they drug him over here to criminally and illegally enter a country they were not citizens of. Their actions killed their son. Now, they get to live with it.
