For those a little late to the party, there’s obviously a fairly big chunk of this video missing from the start that I unfortunately had to remove after a misunderstanding over being allowed to film. I thought I’d edit it out (using RUclips’s internal editor 😵💫) and post again though as there’s still some cool info about the Les Paul Custom as well as a stunning example from 1957 🖤 Thanks for watching.
Great work ! Love your playing. Last jam sounds like the "Madagascar" solo, from GnR' Chineese Democracy.
went to pmt in manchester today and couldnt believe it when when chris buck was playing some tunes in there i was abit over awed and shy but chris asked my name and shook my hand. From the little time i was with him wow what a skilled guitarist but more importantly what a sincere warm and genuine guy. Im telling you it was a pleasure to meet him i didnt tell him i have a terminal disease but thankyou for making my day.
I will pray for you.
@@zitherzon2121yeah don’t worry about the drugs or treatment.
Be good to yourself. I hope things work out as best they can for you. X
@@SquidgyPickle Thanks. I have extra.
My 1974 20th anniversary Black Beauty Custom was the finest axe I ever owned. I bought it with gig money, lawn mowing money, and pizza cook money earned over the previous 2 years. It changed my life, and I've been that 18 year guitar player ever since ! Rock On Chris, keep living the dream ! 🎸
Do you still have it?
I bought my 74 20th anniversary back in 1984 in Newcastle, England. All nickel hardware, 2 pick ups, Schaller keys, gold knobs but a horrible little toggle switch down near the volume controls that doesn't do anything. Whoever had it before me certainly worked it hard! Cost me £600.
I still have my ‘74! Bought it from a music store in SF around 1975. I won’t tell you what I traded in for it.😢 One of the salesmen said it had belonged to Neal Schon before they got it. Even then he was going through guitars like crazy.😉
"There was a time" jam at the end was amazing !
I am always left in awe with your playing! 👏👏👏
This is awesome! Frampton’s Les Paul has always been one of my favorites
Wonderful to hear someone playing without heavy overdrive for a change...like the old days...😁👍🎸
yeas!!
Somehow it doesn't seem to matter what you play, it all sounds absolutely amazing!
Some mighty inspired playing on that '57! What a unique-sounding Les Paul.
3:20 just brought a massive smile on my face the whole jam was fantastic but from that part to the change of the pick up was so great!!!
There was a time to close it out. So awesome!!!
Great vid all around. Always interesting insight and hearing you play is always a pleasure. Thanks for continuing to make them for us.... that outro was siiiick!!!
Love the intro and outros, and of course, all the knowledge shared in between. Cheers.
You've played so fantastic, always amazing, thank you!
Very very cool! I d love to play that one too....
I bought a new 1968 in early 1969. Still have it. Awesome guitar.
No way! That must have been so exciting for you - thanks for sharing!
Awesome stuff Chris!! 👏
That guitar and your playing 😱
Great video and even greater playing! Your playing never ceases to bring a smile to my face and an "oh wow" moment or two. I bet Peter felt the same way when he heard you playing his guitar. The flame is still alive in you Chris! God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Great video .....Outstanding outro lead/melody !
Chris, keep playing on! Your phrasing and chord bends bring so much flavor to everything you play!
Amazing guitar, amazing player!! Nice one Chris 🥇👍
Absolutely incredible 👏
Great video Chris, you are an amazing player and congrats on playing the Pheonix, Kudos
Interesting info--But Astounding playing--as usual. I didn't think it possible, but I think you are even getting better! Stay Well Groovy Dude.
What an amazing sounding guitar!
I knew what it was immediately. That is an amazing Black Beauty. Congratulations on your purchase. That is how a guitar is supposed to sound. Another off the charts demonstration of your abilities. Thank you very much.
Beautifully played! Bravo!
Peter Frampton was my first concert. He was awesome. In hindsight still one of the best shows I've seen. I saw a recent u tube video and he still is!
Wow that middle selection sound. So unique and musical…
His playing is astronomically insane
I saw you on that stage in Glasgow. Great gig, and brilliant to see Peter with the Phenix.
Framptons custom is definitely an iconic guitar. I also loved Brian Robertson's 2 pickup custom. For many years I had a 3 pickup Artisan. Lovely guitar with T tops and I believe it had a maple top on the body. Would love to see you look at one of them sometime. Great playing as usual 👍
Pete let you play his Axe. Chris man you been working hard and is great to see this video. And Cardinal Black is a River of Soul. and a Joy to the ears.
Nice shot Chris💣🎸👋❤💪👍😊
Loved that outro jam man!
I've discovered Chris revently via Paul Davids channel.
I have to say, what a guitarist he is!
Absolutely incredible technique, so so musical, just a pleasure to listen to every time.
wow, so smooth!!!! one of the best player that i've ever seen
Hi Chris, nice meeting you today at PMT Manchester enjoyed chatting with you, we were both eying the Frampton Phenix on the wall and here you are playing the real thing lucky boy lol, sorry I couldn't stay hope it went well today Ged
Wow glad I tuned in ,worth the price of admission ✌🏻🎸🎶
The way these guitars look always does something to me. I have a 2007 57 reissue 3 pickup black beauty Les paul myself, and I consider myself very lucky indeed to own it
Everytime I open that case....WOW
And what a beast to play
Great video and inspiring playing as always 👍👍👍
Wonderful!! You speak of love!! Congrats 👏👏👏🤟🤟💯❤️❤️🎸🎸🎸🤗🇮🇹
You just might be the best and most original blues rock guitar player currently!
Yeah me too Chris fabulous nailed it as ever ! I mean you nailed it and I learnt from your knowledge but adore your skills as a player !
Great information and superb playing of the Fretless Wonder! They’re an underrated model and overshadowed by the more famous and coveted Burst, but every bit as impressive.
Thanks well explained difference that I can hear, the 3 pickups really does make this so different . Cheers ❤😊
Very impressed with your tone
How could you not play Do You Feel Like I Do on that? I couldn’t resist!
My first guitar teacher had a gibson black beauty 20th anniversary . I just drooled over that guitar . Until this day if I see a black les paul custom it brings back those magical days !
A notable difference in the 1968 Custom is that it had a maple cap. In that respect, it’s sort of a hybrid between the solid mahogany Custom and a Burst. Cheers!
Chris you are such a brilliant player ❤❤❤❤
I love that quacky sound so much I installed a middle pickup in my explorer. Flipped the magnet in it so it's out of phase like an old custom. And man I can get that Dick Dale pipeline tone it's so beautiful and then flip the switch and shred. It's so versatile it's unreal.
Cheers Chris enjoy your weekend
Great Playing and thats a Beautiful Guitar too.
There Was A Tiiiiiiime! Great video & jams! ;)
There are few guitar players that you can immediately tell who it is just from a couple of notes (ie slash, mark knoffler,David Gilmour).I honestly think you are well on your way to becoming one of those players. Your choice of notes / phrasing is very unique.
Your an inspiration to me and many others I’m sure
Keep up the good work Chris 🎸🎸
I’d actually say that Chris’s lead lines are actually harder to mimic, then Slash or Gilmour’s even, with Knoppfler’s tone depending on what song.
I think he’s already there in terms of ability. I think he just isn’t nearly as famous or popular
Couldn't agree more
Ritchie Blackmore is another that is like that. Freakishly unique. Yngwie was too - for a few years. Back then nobody could really do what he was doing. I remember us all wondering how it was even humanly possible, plus he had a freaky way of bending notes and playing melodies etc (it was not just about speed with him). Every Tom, Dick, and Harry set to work trying to learn it. He had a massive impact.
Good God man!!!!! Your right hand technique is awesome….. Oh yeah nice guitars too !!!!
I love that so much of that Frampton live sound, was phaser and/or vocoder, through the Les Paul.
Love the tone, when playing with the keys.
Not vocorder"Heil Talk Box" it rattled Your teeth.. for real
Joe Walsh"Rocky mountain way"-Heil Talk Box,Joe Perry "WalkThisWay"-Heil Talk Box
Excellent
Thanks for explaining the electronics. I had no idea how that 3 pickup model worked. That bridge/middle position is just brilliant, the out of phase-ish effect is glorious. A bit like greeny. Great video
It varies depending on the guitar. Frampton's is wired differently
Personally i love how captain kirks sig is set up
I acquired my dream axe, a 1977 LP Custom last year. Changed my guitar life! Best playing and sounding LP I’ve ever owned. Factory chrome hardware as well
The Les Paul Custom, with the 3 pickups has always intrigued me, I saw a photo of Eric Clapton using one on the Disraeli Gears recording sessions, and of course Peter Frampton's astoundingly famous use of one, thanks for your detailed study of this guitar, wow what an opportunity to play Frampton's Phoenix
Hello Chris Buck. Thank you for this historically edifying installment. I really appreciate your playing, you do it so well! And you aren't using any distortion/fuzz which allows me to hear your pickups. Look forward to your following videos. Cheers.
insane outro man
Bit of magic in that out-tro CB..
Lusted after a three pickup Les Paul as a teen but I never realised the middle position wasn't all three pickups! Great story Chris and awesome playing.
Really enjoyable - the playing, of course, but also the tour of the 3 pick-ups - I was never quite sure how that all worked! I still have my 1968 LP Custom, I bought it off a friend in NZ around 1974 and it was my one and only guitar for recording and live work till 1982 when the band imploded! Still love playing it - all original pick-ups etc. frets are virtually non-existent but that's perfectly fine by me 😀
I have a MIJ knock off from 70s. It's still beautiful.
I have an 1981 G.L.P.C. Black Beauty . Love the Sound.
Was fortunate to snap up a 2020 LP Custom right from the factory through Reverb. It only has 2 pickups; but it is a custom shop "demo' marked instrument. Gorgeous gloss ebony/gold with an equally superb setup and sound! Now, just to play it 1/10th as good as Chris!!
Merci beaucoup.
Just add a note here. Not only were the PAFs installed on Frampton's the wiring is different. Essentially his is a two pickup les paul wiring, but through single Vol and tone (the "bridge" position ones). Then the middle pickup is essentially always on but controlled through the other Vol and tone. Thus way Peter gets tones not available from a normal set up. Ie middle only, middle with neck, all three etc.
I think it likely this was due to the retro fit of the three humbuckers, you'd need a special switchcraft model switch for the factory version obviously the 54 would not have originally had that so the wiring was a how to solution at the time.
It seemed to me that you play that guitar in a totally different way.Your string attack as well as to what, where and how you were fretting notes not only looked different physically but sounds sonically different to.Wicked awesome.
The intro playing on this video is some the of the best blues playing I've heard that wasn't Derek Trucks, and that's saying something. Absolutely stunning.
Amazing! Once again. Nobody plays like Chris!
Soooo nice playing 🥺
Wow just when I thought your tone couldn't get better. This guitar REALLY suited you! If any guitar player deserves to have 90k sat in the next guitar budget pot you do haha
That sounded Christmassey, a versatile guitar. Thanks for the LP history lesson. Cheers!
I had a real 58 just like that when I was 15 back in the 70s. Traded it in after a couple of years...and it went to Steve Clark from Def Leppard...
That guitar and Robbo's one on the cover of Live and Dangerous is, why I craved and finally bought a black LP Custom
It's worth noting the wiring on the Phenix is different to the '57 model you demoed. On Frampton's the middle pickup is not wired to the switch but is blended in using one of the pair of vol/tone pots, the two outside pickups sharing the other vol/tone
0:56 this is so awesome
Such Smooth and clear and adding also that Grit, WOW you play so Beautifully Outstanding, WOW Babe, The Phoenix Beautiful💙💙💙 Lisa Einsohn Amazing, Lines on that Guitar❤️
Awesome guitar Chris, it made you sound really good 🤣 ace video Budd thanks.
Great review and amazing to hear you play this rare guitar! Question: does it have the low frets ?
Cheers
Dan
I need to work on stealing that last lead solo. ;-) Absolutely lovely and fun to get some Les Paul vibes. Cheers
You are one my favorite guitar players when you play a strat. You sound amazing when you play other guitars, too but strat makes you sound like you are speaking your native language.
I totally agree!
that intro sounds amazing
Lol, judging by the thumbnail, I thought you had a Buckethead Les Paul. 😂. I was like “this will be interesting “.
Beautiful GNR reference at the end.
Very interesting 👍🎸🎶
Somebody with money needs to buy you that guitar! It won't be me though. I'm poor. Love your playing and your videos! Keep up the magic!
Oh those goose bumps at 5:16
I got to play an original’57, and it was the most magnificent guitar I’ve ever played! I’m still lusting after the ‘61 Custom; I will get one eventually… Perhaps give up my EDS-1275 for it. 😂
You absolutely wrecked that Les Paul at the end :-) As Craig would say, fab-you-luss.
beautiful guitar, but honestly everything this man touches turns into gold
Greenys always gonna be my fav
I sold my Les Paul black custom earlier this year. Okay, it was only an Epiphone but damn good looking and a pleasure to own it. For some reason it didn’t sound so sweet! 😜 (even before I lost the use of a few fingers).
Tremendous video. 🍺
Hi Chris, I need to get that App. Will be in touch is due course. 🍺
Pretty cool
Albert Lee joined EC's band in the '80s and read they were talking about guitars.
AL mentions missing a LP Custom he sold to buy a Tele.
EC, "I have one of those" and gives it to him !
Maybe mentioned here...
