Hey Jon, I'm from New Zealand but I was living in Corral volunteering teaching English last year. I went backpacking in Chile during 2016 and loved it so much I decided I needed to return. This nostalgia I got from watching this video was crazy, seeing a few people I knew in the background of the video and all the streets I used to walk around in for a year. I lived just overlooking the mirador which was just above the costanera. It brought me a lot of joy bro - I miss Corral and Valdivia so much, just wanted to say thank you.
I also want to say keep up the good work! Your channel is a really interesting, authentic and an accurate representation of Chilean culture, especially for a gringo. I watched a lot of your videos before I went to Chile in preparation. Currently saving back here in New Zealand and will hopefully return next year to see all the great friends and family I made over there.

Genial el vídeo, un dato curioso, el sistema de fuertes de Valdivia es uno de los mas importantes y grandes de América, se compone de 4 castillos y 6 fuertes, se construyeron para evitar que los holandeses conquistaran esa zona en el siglo XVII, por eso se le conoce como "La llave del sur".

De hecho en una época los holandeses llegaron a ocupar la isla de Chiloe, como punto intermedio de sus viajes en barcos hacia las Indias Orientales.
Falto agregar que los ingenieros del puente cau cau que fallaron eran españoles...no chilenos..
Y los que construyeron esa cadena de fuertes de más de 450 años también.

pero agregar que hacer ese puente tan idiota sin utilidad real porque se pudo hacer uno sin que sea de este estilo y funcional, fue de los Chilenos

Felicitaciones, vivi en valdivia muchos años y me encanto tu video, ademas practico el ingles escuchandolo, cuando los hacias en español tambien eran muy divertidos, un dato para tu que eres amante de las marraquetas, en valdivia se llaman "pan batido" o "pan frances" y aunque tienen igual forma su sabor es diferente

20,000 Chilean pesos is just under $30 for the boat ride, lunch and ""once"". The once is the Chilean version of tea time , a tradition from the English from the 1800s when they owned the nitrate sulfate mines or "salitre", these mines made Chile very rich back then. Nitrate sulfate otherwise known as white gold was used for explosives until there was a blockade against the Germans during WWI. The Germans then developed plastic explosives and the whole industry collapsed overnight, the nitrate mines were in the north of Chile. I liked that you said the entrance cost to the (Spanish colonial) fort was in U.S. $ and Chilean pesos. There is a tour boat in Valdivia that takes to an original German farm house from the 1850s, you can ride on a solar powered boat to it. In the future you could have a link to your guides in your videos. Great video.

@@JonGrossGringo Apparently they have them in other parts of Chile too. It would make a lot more sense in they made catamarans that are solar. The boats are small for the time being but I am sure they will get bigger and better within the next few years. My mother took a very nice tour in Valdivia in one of them two or three years ago. As a child, I went always to Entre Lagos in Valdivia for tomar once or icecream or pastries, my favourite is mazapán.

Jonny, tienes que ir ahí en la temporada de verano en los meses de enero y febrero, es cuando más gente va, el clima está más agradable y se oscurece mas tarde mas o menos a las 9 - 9:30pm

I'm not sure if you know, but the miscalculated bridge was built by a Spanish company, in case viewers think that the Chileans messed it up, and of course the forts were built by the Spanish when they ruled Chile. They clearly did a better job with the forts!!

if you can visit the austral university. it's beautiful, there are some paths bordering the river ... and I see that your family is fine.

Those forts were built by the Spanish to deter British pirate´s raid into Valdivia, and to fully assert control of "southern" Chile from other european powers, the fort was considered unexpugnable by traditional standards, because they provided cover for each others and the river is not very wide in some parts so the sinking of a great ship would couse the others to pile up and in turn become turkey-shot. In the independence war from Spain however a greater than life character, a flamboyant brit called lord cochrane put himself a special task force of 300 Chilean volunteers and with a few ships in the dead of night he captured all forts by scaling them up with ropes while dead silent, to this days he is considered a great hero by many nations, including UK, Brazil, Greece and Chile, ive always thought it as a death star type of scenario, no big fleet could do it but a few stealthy people could.
